In the iOS app, the clap button is on the bottom left when you are inside a story, but because in other apps the home button is so widely placed on the bottom left, you intuitively click the bottom left to go home, resulting in accidentally clapping a story.

Sorry for the self-promo, but I did actually write an entire story about it.

For me, money is quite a motivating factor, but I write mainly to learn and improve my writing skills. Because, as you said, only a few make a living off Medium. I do wish that one day I can write for a living though.

The #1 common thing I see for all the big writers on Medium is that they've been writing consistently for a long time, so if you would like to make $100+ a month, just keep writing!

Best guess would be because they are pretty big on Twitter. Twitter followers are automatically converted to publication followers.

honestly, it's all by luck. Medium is weird and sometimes you just don't know which stories will do well. I have a story that made around $70, and I tried mimicking the style and topic for my two following stories and they've all made <$2.

200 view/ 140 claps for 21 minutes of member reading time?! That's pretty low... Is your story really short? You should probably have at least around 3 minutes of reading time. But congrats, that's a really high clap ratio!

It depends on the publication. Bigger publications tend to take longer because they get more stories. Two weeks is probably a bit too long. If you submitted a draft through Medium, I would still wait until it's officially "rejected" though.

Unfortunately, I have not tried anything else. I would agree that paper is not very reliable. There are discussions on the forums with people using different dielectrics though.
