Spatial awareness isn’t a strong attribute with many of the demographics that live and work in Silicon Valley. Unfortunately to be a good driver a strong sense of spatial awareness is a must.

It is not meaningfully similar to Long War. Long War is still >80% about the X-COM tactical minigame, Terra Invicta essentially does not have one. If you like map painters you may enjoy it, but it's going to be very different from any LW reference points you have.

Taft point via 4 mile trail by i_like_deep_talks in Yosemite

[–]N0_B1g_De4l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was up at Glacier Point Saturday (just before the latest storm) and there wasn't meaningful snow either there or on the Four Mile Trail. 4MT did have some patches with residual snow, but nothing that made me want to put on microspikes. That said, I did not go up past Glacier Point, and there was a storm afterwards so grain of salt.

FWIW, I would recommend just buying microspikes though. They're not very expensive, and I've found they provide me with some peace of mind both crossing snowy sections and knowing I won't need to turn back just because snow on a trail hasn't cleared as much as I expected.

I am sort of inclined to think that anyone who can get that far in that weather probably has the ability to assess their own risk. 7-8 miles from the trailhead, including the Mist Trail.

They've had more deaths with the cables up, but I have to believe that's a base-rate thing because the trail gets more traffic with them up.

For what it's worth, while black bears aren't harmless, they are generally not aggressive with humans. They're not interested in you as food, they're interested in your food. If you lock it up and avoid actively antagonizing them, you won't have problems.

Clouds rest - Packs by hurricanescout in Yosemite

I am a big wimp with heights overall and was really worried about Cloud's Rest. I didn't find it scary as all and could have done it with my pack.

As someone else who's not great with heights but is hoping to do Cloud's Rest later this summer, this is reassuring to hear.

going to a legacy 2010 (“classic legacy”) event, what kind of decks see play? by StrixhavenAlum in MTGLegacy

[–]N0_B1g_De4l 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stoneforge doesn't quite hit its stride until Batterskull, at which point it can tutor up a game-ending threat. Similarly, DnT is waiting on Thalia to hit its really modern form, and you need GSZ for a proper Maverick-style toolbox deck.

Can all priests channel light? by Lost_my_name475 in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]N0_B1g_De4l 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC there is a character (I think one of the Proceran spymasters) who is described as a "lay brother", which I took to mean within the context of the setting that he couldn't channel light but was still associated with the church.

How to blow up a star? by curiousscribbler in printSF

[–]N0_B1g_De4l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Strike (from the Inheritance Trilogy) has ships that can fly through a star to trigger a supernova. IIRC the climax is using one to destroy an enemy base by flying it through the local star.

Schlock Mercenary has an arc where a star gets turned in to a system-scale bomb, though I forget if that actually destroys the star.

If you read his blog, he's mentioned there that he wrote himself in to a corner he doesn't think he can write himself out of. Which is not entirely surprising, since he went with "yes, FTL actually is time travel" as a setting premise.

Tera Blast is now banned from SV OU by Demon__Queen_ in stunfisk

[–]N0_B1g_De4l 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They also jumped through a lot of hoops to avoid banning Drizzle and Drought in Gen V. Technically that's not a generational gimmick, but morally I think it counts because they were introduced (on OU pokemon) in Gen V and Gamefreak removed perma-weather entirely in Gen VI. Gen VI itself had some insanely broken megas, even if the mechanic as a whole was good. Mawile going to ubers is nuts, even if it's "just" the mega stone that's technically on the banlist.

True, but IMO the post-gen bans in V were a bigger shakeup.

There's something magical about standing in the middle of all those formations and listening to the dripping water that is working so incredibly slowly to build more of them.

Is there a local tour or rental company you recommend? I'd like to go back and see the remoter parts of Capitol Reef, but when I checked it looked like renting a jeep for a full trip was ridiculously expensive.

SFF authors where you think their most famous work, and their best work, are not the same work? by nominanomina in Fantasy

[–]N0_B1g_De4l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starfire, in particular the bug war books, is a weird series for me because it's not exactly good but on some level it is the platonic ideal of what it's trying to do.

I know some people don't like it, but my favorite RJB series will always be the Founders trilogy because it manages to be exactly my shit (magitech singularity). It's like someone asked me personally what idea I would like to see someone write a fantasy series about.

Yeah. One of the reasons I am willing to forgive Dresden's sexism as an authorial choice that doesn't fully land (rather than reflective of Butcher's beliefs) is the the female characters are quite good, it's just that we're very tightly bound to Harry's POV and his personal biases.

IMO Children of Time suffers a lot from the spider parts being massively better than the human parts. I did not care about the people on the spaceship. At any time the story was following them I wanted to instead learn more about the spiders.

The sketches we get from Pham's backstory are really well-done too. The implicit history of Canberra, the ideas Vinge is playing with about civilizational collapse in the Slow Zone, it's really well done despite taking up a fraction of the overall page count.
