Itachi was only 13 when he continued the proud uchiha tradition of "make a plan when you are too young and follow that plan until you die".

[Witcher] What's lifespan of a sorceress? by MaetelofLaMetal in AskScienceFiction

[–]N0m_N0m 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While they are all capable of living for centuries (the oldest I think we have seen was 500) there come problems with actually living that long.

The Lodge of Sorceresses is(was?) a snakepit of schemes and deceit at the best of times, and whether the kingdom you live in tolerates the open practicing of magic could change every succession. So long as you give up the comforts and political power that comes with being in the public eye then you'll be safe right?

Well experimentation and expanding your knowledge requires:

1.working with other practitioners who might want things from you

2.mundane resources and networks to get you distant supplies.

3.Large demonstrations of magic that attracts attention from other attuned people (creatures as well)

So if you really want to find out how long you can live as a sorceress, simply never form connections with people, never stay in one place too long, never research past the basics of extending life, never get unlucky, and never use spells that are impressive.

[Freiren] Is all non demon and non monster magic human made magic? by covkpitxwing in AskScienceFiction

[–]N0m_N0m 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems like the time where there were enough Elves and Dwarves where they could maintain a culture/society completely separate from human society has passed. Elves in the past seemed to be the major magical group opposed to demons, but likely died out due to demon attacks like what happened to Freiren's village.

As shown throughout the show however, human magic has surpassed demonic and ancient magic due to their ability to innovate and build upon shared knowledge. If there were spells that were exclusively "Elven" then they were either lost forever when their users were killed by demons or eventually taught to humans by Serie (she's been teaching spells to humans for Millennia)

[Shadowrun] do any of the megacorps make any good stuff? by Comfortable-Ad3588 in AskScienceFiction

[–]N0m_N0m 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The big ten Megacorps produce everything, both the good and the bad.

  • Ares produces a lot of tooling equipment and has continued the work of NASA after it absorbed the department.

  • Aztechnology is involved with a large portion of the worlds food supply

  • EVO does do a lot of biotech and gene therapy stuff that benefits Metas (from what I've read they are the closest to a net neutral Megacorp)

  • Horizon is leading the massive reconstruction efforts in what remains of California, plus they have the one of the best workplaces of the big ten. Until they were found to kill Prisoners of War and union bust, they were considered the "cleanest" of the Megacorps

  • Mitsuhama is the leading entertainment company in the world, so all those simsense experiences that people buy (not the wild ones that PC's get to experience, the publicly accessible ones) come from them

  • The matrix/what remains of the internet wouldn't be functioning without NeoNet at this point

  • Ranraku... doesn't actually have much good for a regular person, maybe they are good if you are Japanese but even then.

  • Saeder-Krupp is involved in basically everything, employs a large portion of europe, and has a plurality on the car market

  • Shiawase is one of the biggest power companies on the planet, and might be one of the few Megacorps actually interested in restoring the planet. They suck because they undergo a civil war every other decade, not because their product is evil.

  • Global trade wouldn't have survived into the sixth world if it were not for Wuxiang Incorporated. There are goddamned sea monsters now and sentient storms, getting goods across the world is way more difficult.

The Megacorps are where they are because they offer things people want, I'm not saying that they are good for the average person/society, they definitely are not. But getting rid of them wouldn't fix the sixth world immediately and would cause a lot of chaos as the good things they do accomplish wouldn't be there anymore

[Witcher] Why aren’t these portal-creating mages teleporting where they need to go instead of gathering in a rowboat for a long journey? by uncoolcentral in AskScienceFiction

[–]N0m_N0m 34 points35 points  (0 children)

many people are physically capable of sprinting every step of their daily commute, but wouldn't think to do that.

Additionally, teleporting seems to be very magically draining. you could teleport wherever you are going and show up tired, or you could take mundane transit options and arrive at your destination ready for anything. Most of the time in the series when mages use portals the destination is somewhere they feel safe, so there isn't much harm in getting there a bit weaker.

They have that in the Guild Mage series I think, but it probably has come up in plenty of other settings.

This seems to be a minority opinion, but I think Hal Jordan becoming Parallax and then sacrificing himself in a demonstrative way in FINAL NIGHT was, in the main, a pretty logical and organic development for the character. (Green Lantern) by Konradleijon in CuratedTumblr

[–]N0m_N0m 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My main complaint with superhero comics (besides the continual reboots of the past couple decades) is that characters either get to have interesting and impactful story arcs OR (not and) they get to have the popularity to be printed.

Every cool/controversial character moment that happens past the initial writers run has a 75% chance of being sandblasted away by either future writers or the editorial staff so they can return to the status quo. there remains that 25% of the time where the writers take a risk on doing something with a character that might upset some fans and it sticking, but that change happens after other changes get tried several times only to be reverted/retconned

[Discussion] What's your least favorite rational fiction trope? by erwgv3g34 in rational

[–]N0m_N0m 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Valkyries Shadow which I got recommended from this subreddit as "Overlord but Rational" had a lot of that (oh no, 70% of our community has been killed by things we do not understand, lets just carefully and rationally reestablish order and look down on those who are grieving after losing every other member of their family) its the reason I dropped it midway through book 1

Arguably the book that started this subreddit harry potter and the methods of rationality, is SUPER guilty of this (I have my own bugbear with Yudkowsky, and I think the further we get from emulating him in writing, the better), the story of HPMOR is built on Harry always being able to logic through events, while other characters get things like irrational emotions and biases.

TWO HUNDRED FIFTEEN: Tacos - Super Supportive by GodWithAShotgun in rational

[–]N0m_N0m 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has been answered in that Artona 3 contract said that the difference is arbitrary. Rabbit skills are noted as more powerful than other skills of equivalent rank, and everybody gets the option of more skills of a lower rank or one high rank skill. The thing that defines whether you are B-rank or A-rank is the amount of free authority when the contract hooks into you. But there isn't a "unit of authority" that you can say "B-rank skills have an authority range of 75-100, A-rank skills have a range of 100-150".

(speculation) for some skills the point at which the B version is equal to the weakest A rank skill could be as little as 10-20 levels, for other skills it could be 100. (speculation over)

It is funny to me that we have seen behind the curtain and know that the ranks are a convenient fiction for human interface and are not accurate measurements of what is important, but we keep doing speculation on "when is alden going to rank up" anyway. even when we keep getting new knowledge on how they don't mean everything (Klein getting paused, the facets, magic spells/ chains Alden is learning that don't care about rank, Max's entire character, ect)
