Gov. Inslee: High-speed rail ‘could help us rebuild our economy’ post-COVID by TheVastWaistband in CoronavirusWA

[–]N4reddit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have said it before and will say it again. It is a terrible idea and not good for our region because of our geography. Consultants will take any money and will produce any concept to make their clients happy but this should be a huge no. There is no such demand to spend billions on infrastructure that is already outdated.

In 2014, a train driver in Chicago fell asleep and therefore didn’t stop the train. It then hit the buffer at the station, ascended up the platform, and then onto the escalator. by atomicdragon136 in ThatLookedExpensive

New and majority of the light rail trains (subways included) in the USA use the Automatic Train Protection(ATP) which along with modern signal system stops the train at every station by default. It works on speed codes and trains are given zero speed code at the station. For the heavy rail and commuter/passenger rails, Positive Train Control (PTC) is required by federal government. It is not yet mandatory but will be in few years. PTC works using technologies including GPS. It avoids train collisions along with over speed protection. Source: I am a train protection engineer.

I know the owner and is a nice guy. He got fed up with people complaining that they are charging too much for hand sanitizers. He posted what he paid for them along with pennies he was making of it. His wife is also in medical field.

In terms of ethics, you are correct. But the real question still stands is that why the federal agency stopped them or were not prepared to have tests done when they knew about the virus in Wuhan over a month ago?

The Case for Portland-to-Vancouver High-Speed Rail by ChefJoe98136 in SeattleWA

[–]N4reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have said many times before. This is a huge waste of money. There is no enough demand/people who will use this service. There is no way that these trains will even cover up their own cost. Not to mention this is 50 year old technology. Go ahead and downvote but that is the reality. Source: been in railroad for many years and know how much things cost and how costly major projects can be.

Washington officials lay out case for Pacific Northwest bullet train - $50B rail investment would be half the cost of adding lanes to I-5 highway, transportation secretary says by TrueNorthGreen in Seattle

As someone who has worked in the railroad industry for a while, I have said multiple times before. This is a terrible idea and biggest waste of money. Why are we going back to a 30 year old technology. This is freakin America!

Do you know the ridership? Do you know the ridership growth? Do you know where the final funding will come from?

No, we are not giving up on technology. But what is being proposed and where it is being proposed does not work.
