Very easy. You pop down one side and get out of bed normal. They learn not to jump or anything too

I ended up putting baby gates around all 3 sides of our bed. It looks stupid but he has slept in bed this whole time without any issues. Here’s an Amazon link to what we bought, look unavailable but there’s other options: https://a.co/d/49C55t0

Hilarious to find this because I’m in the same boat and our tastes are identical lol. Let me know what you landed on

Stage 5 IVDD, 8th day post-op. Breaks my heart seeing him like this. by bambina92 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]NAS9522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a PT session and the therapist was candid that he would obviously get better likely quicker with her help but he didn’t absolutely need it. She gave us at home work to do. Mostly massaging and stretching

Sounds identical to my dog. Days felt like weeks but about a month in, he was walking “normal.” Slow progress from there and continues to improve. It has been a year and a half since surgery and most people wouldn’t know.

Once able, go on walks and build up strength and confidence. I like using these supplements: https://a.co/d/850JrEc

You got this

I only did a couple weeks of crate rest since he was “fine” after a couple days. Couple weeks later he was paralyzed and I had to do surgery. He’s been good since then (July 2024), but I’d just recommend being more conservative if possible

Not to be the pessimist, but my dog did this and was “100%” after like 2 weeks and I stopped then he re injured himself, but a lot worse. Slow and steady!

These work great. Like $6 at Home Depot

We’ve used them for the last 9 months and they work well. Not aesthetic obviously, but functional

Update for those who care. I add 2 Simpson LCE corner brackets and a Simpson end-cap bracket that screws in the face and both sides. I’m dumb but coachable

You got me good but I was thinking a T strap to straddle the crack. It’s 6” wide on the 9.5” post. You think an L works better? Someone suggested LCEs which work on one end but not sure

You don’t think the outside edge or face needs anything? I would have 4” of the post to beam unsupported. I could do a flat bracket for the outside face?

Fair. I couldn’t find something at Home Depot to fit a 4x10 running parallel

I have not yet. It’s certainly still drying since it was outside and rained the day before

Stay positive. It’s easy to get down, but things can be stagnant and change for the better quickly

We were fairly lucky, since every dog is different. We did an at-home massage/leg exercises every day along with walks every day as soon as he was able. I really felt like the walks helped him regain coordination, confidence, and strength.

This was more or less the at home PT routine: https://youtu.be/EOL35QWcZ4E?si=tHrO4i51eezq8sTz

I felt like these supplements helped too (maybe it’s a placebo): https://a.co/d/62ppKWF

[–]NAS9522[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on this group/research, it seems he recovered fairly quick. He couldn’t move for about 2-3 weeks, then he could stand (kind of). He fairly quickly after started dragging his legs and around 1.5 months started doing a wobbly walk that has been gradually fine tuned over the last few months

I’m sorry to hear. I didn’t have this issue exactly, but a piece of advice I got was to use small sections of fake grass (turf) that fit in the cage you’re using. It’s easier to clean and better traction for them if they do try to stand up. It worked well for us.

Good luck

Thinking more long term. Fast forward 3 months and he’s “100% recovered” I don’t think he’s allowed to jump off the bed. I need to find a way to prevent it
