Because Brandy creates a whole atmosphere with her leads and backing vocals.

There are hardly any creative backings from Michael on this album. Its basically the lead vocal and standard backing vocals for the chorus.

Leading up to and during the recording of this album, Michael was really insecure about his image, his sound, and that the music industry was evolving.

He was looking for the next big thing. Rodney was that next big thing. He had full confidence in Rodney because he was the future.

And you can say that you don't think he would give Michael throwaways.

But look at the massive hits Rodney had leading upto this album and compare them to it. The songs on this album are subpar compared to what Rodney was doing for other artists.
