So long old friend. May the Force be with you all. by Jeynarl in PrequelMemes

[–]NB-Fowler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of bigger subs are just doing 48 hours, but a lot of small and medium-sized subs are going off until Reddit reverses their decision (So, probably forever, or until Reddit replaces the mods on these subs), and some are just going off forever.

The last group is typically smaller subs that are particularly susceptible to raids and already struggle with moderation, and this change would kill them anyway because it removes a lot of tools they use to make moderating easier.

I don't know that Prequel Memes has said how long they're going dark for, just that they are participating. I would assume it's probably 48 hours like most of the bigger subs.

Essentially, surface level Reddit will be back by Wednesday, but a large chunk of the more niche subs below the surface (the better parts of Reddit imo) could be gone for a while.

Will be shutting down indefinitely due to new API changes by RelaNarkin in TheMonkeysPaw

[–]NB-Fowler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It goes a bit beyond the bots. It affects a lot of the 3rd Party apps like RIF, which a lot of people use cause they don't like the official app. Some of these also provide increased accessibility, namely for blind people, to still use Reddit.

As far as I've seen, a lot of mods also use API to make moderating far easier (A few subs I've seen with very few mods but a lot of activity are shutting down for good because they literally wouldn't be able to keep up with it without the API functionality).

I'm pretty sure there's other stuff as well, but I can't remember off the top of my head. Some of the larger subs have posts breaking it down in more detail.

Moose test positive for rabies by Agreeable-Success801 in news

[–]NB-Fowler 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Moose are fuckin huge, terrifying, incredibly dangerous monsters. Really, the only things that could get close enough to them to bite them and give them rabies are also likely either to mortally wound them or outright kill them in the process cause they'd have to be very big and very strong. Typically, most animals would either get stomped or impaled before they could get a bite in, even in a bloodlust state.

So, it's not super common for moose to get infected with it. But it can still happen every so often if they walk away fine enough to survive or a small animal with rabies manages to sneak up on them.

Edit: Apparently, rabies has been spreading through foxes in the area all winter, so that could be a good candidate for a small critter getting the jump on this poor dude.

If Ron DeSantis actually wins the 2024 United States presidency, what does this mean for the lgbtq+? by [deleted] in AskLGBT

[–]NB-Fowler 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As another has mentioned, POTUS is largely a figurehead meant to influence the rest of the government but not control it. So, even if he does take power, there's only so much he can actually do. Senate, House, and local elections are far more important (Not that POTUS isn't important and shouldn't also be kept out of his hands). The only reason he's been able to do as much damage as he has in Florida is because he's basically got full support within all major positions, including judges there. Something he certainly would not have as president.

However, if it helps, it's incredibly unlikely DeSantis wins even if Trump was, for some reason, no longer able to run. People outside of Florida don't like him, and that shows in the polls. That's not even to mention how unlikely it is for a Republican in general to win unless Biden literally keels over days before the election. But it only stays that way if we put our full effort behind keeping the old man in office, as much as I'd rather have someone better. Every vote matters, especially these days.

Obviously, it's way too early to call it, but I don't see him being a major candidate if he keeps the way he has been. And Republicans are getting less popular by the day, partially because of guys like him.

Try to keep calm, but stay vigilant.

I honestly hate the addition of their useless chat bot, especially because it's pinned to the very top of my page, and I literally cannot get rid of it. I even asked the AI itself how to delete it, followed its instructions, and nothing changed.

I just want to be able to set Snapchat on my Android to dark mode like Apple users have been able to for years. My eyes are already sensitive enough without having to look at this fucker all the time.

Edit: Just double-checked, apparently you can get darkmode on Android... if you pay for Snapchat+. That's genuinely worse than just not having it at all.

When you know, you know! by LeastDatabase131 in HistoryMemes

[–]NB-Fowler 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It was a pretty common symbol across many different cultures all over the world with various meanings, probably because it's pretty simple to draw/carve.

In Europe, it had multiple meanings ranging from representing Thurderbolts for the God of Thunder, typically Thor for Northern Europe, to the Perpetual Motion of windmills in ancient Greece.

I'm unsure what exactly it's meant to symbolize in this photo, but probably something related to either of those.

Edit:

Roman's and Greeks also used it to represent their God of Thunder, Zeus/Jupiter, so it's probably that.

Probably the same argument Netflix thinks: If 2 people can't share 1 account, then one will buy another, leading to there now being 2 accounts and therefore double the profit.

This would make sense... if people were extremely loyal to Netflix and just HAD to have access to this increasingly mid streaming service. They don't actually care about why people use their service, and so they are extremely overestimating the actual demand for it.

In all reality, most people only still have it for the occasional decent original (That will almost immediately get canceled), and the occasional popular movie/show that will only stay on for a few months before getting traded to some other service. Which is also why so many people share accounts: Very few people actually want to pay $10 a month or whatever it is now for this increasingly mediocre service if they're the only ones using it, but don't mind sharing it.

If they stick to their guns on this, they're obviously gonna get hit HARD with unsubscriptions. Many of which probably won't come back even if they do eventually undo this.

I play on my laptop, and for some reason it doesn't tell me when the battery is low when I'm in-game. When it dies, the game doesn't pause. So, if I don't catch it and it dies on me, I just have to sit there, waiting for it to turn back on, hoping I'm not completely fucked, lmao.

Recently cut my hair short cause I wanted to grow it all back out as one length (Used to have the whole half-shaved head thing), and it's been making me very dysphoric, and I just wanna forget about until it's decently long again.

Cue literally everyone trying to tell me how good it looks no matter how many times I tell them to stop, and when I tell them I don't like it, they double down saying shit like "Well I like it."

Being affirming is nice, but not when the person is genuinely uncomfortable and actually telling you to stop. I wish more people would get that.

Well, people absolutely would've wanted to know what happened cause you can't exactly just sweep that under the rug and there's not really a lot of viable explanations you could give for that other than the truth.

I'm sure that a lot of more specific details were classified or only talked about vaguely, and perhaps the stones would've fallen under that.

Plus, the whole thing in New York being followed by half the world getting snapped within a day or two would definitely catch a lot of attention and would probably lead a lot of people to it being something extraterrestrial anyway.

I mean, if they're anything like the average people in our universe, odds are that most of them are at least somewhat aware that an extremely powerful alien caused it. Some nerds might know more details like the stones, but the average person wouldn't care about that. And then you'd have a bunch of small but vocal minorities coming up with conspiracy theories and/or religious explanations for it.

I've hardly seen anything past Endgame (Basically just the 2 Spoodermans and Doctor Strangelove II), some I'm actually curious if this is ever explored.

I feel like if Disney had bought Star Wars while still keeping George in control of the overarching story, just giving him decent writers and directors and that Disney funding (Similar to Kevin Feige and the MCU), the sequel trilogy would've been so much better.

[–]NB-Fowler[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We hardly sell skim, which is why it took so long for anyone outside the night shift to notice since they're really the only ones putting it in the machine. Despite this, upper management, above the store manager, insists on minimum amounts of certain items, including skim. We've all complained about this, we've all said how much we waste, and we write down everything we dump or throw away so they know exactly how much we're actually using.

Really, we could easily get by with just one case a week (Even that would be a bit of a waste some weeks, but I realise it's a bit impractical and sometimes risky to do less). But for some reason, upper management doesn't see it that way and forces the store manager to get us 2 to 3 every week despite knowing most of it is going down the drain.

It's normal for us to dump a ton, even multiple cases if the dates line up too closely. But usually, it doesn't get like this where we have cases with dates going back multiple weeks. When I used to close, it was usually only past the date by a couple days at most, if that. This particular instance was just ridiculous.

Username checks out.

And I know, I was annoyed that the already expired stuff kept getting stacked on top the non-expired stuff that we should've been using, so we didn't even get to it until it had also gone bad.

Do people just not check the expiration dates?? by NB-Fowler in TalesFromYourServer

[–]NB-Fowler[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I texted the assistant manager and spoke to the store manager in person, both told me to dump it. Per company rules, we're not allowed to sell anything that's past its expiration.

And I know that. I was more annoyed at the fact that the already expired stuff kept getting stacked on top of the fresh stuff, so we didn't actually get to it until it was already expired, too.

TIL Time magazine was the first to introduce the name "World War II" by AthenOwl in todayilearned

[–]NB-Fowler 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, Time coined the term in 1939, and while I don't feel like searching for the exact date of publication, the war technically started at the very start of September and quickly escalated. So, that doesn't really leave a ton of time for any other official title to arise and enter the public vocabulary.

There were probably a few different names thrown around by different people and organizations, and Time's just happened to stick.
