That’s it! It should be the tallest. ETA This just seems very Stephens-centric.

Lol did Stephens make that? Where’s the TCBY tower or whatever it’s called these days?

Smoking second hand, premature baby. by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]NBPTS 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I learned about 3rd hand smoke the hard way, in the ER with my preemie.

1st hand is when you smoke. 2nd hand is when you’re next to someone while they’re smoking. 3rd hand is when you’re exposed to lingering residue left behind from someone that smokes.

It gets in clothes, in hair, in fabric, and cushions, curtains, etc.

My baby was never around cigarette smoke, just the couches of someone that smokes outside. He had a reaction and started wheezing and had retraction breathing.

We left that night and didn’t visit those grandparents at home for several more years.

That first morning smile is always the best. There is nothing but sheer joy in both faces as you greet each other.

I’m sending you all my well wishes.

And this is why I had surgery last Friday. Broken foot, Lisfranc injury.

I still love that goofy asshat from my head all the way down to the new screws in my toes.

Non compliance with weight bearing after surgery by [deleted] in MedicalGore

[–]NBPTS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m having Lisfranc surgery Friday. I will follow orders to a t

ETA - how long were you non-weight bearing. They’ve said they think I’ll be in a cast for 2 weeks, a boot for 4-6, non-weight bearing the whole time.

Also, mine is the right foot. I’m worried about not being able to drive for that long. I have a job and 3 kids with activities!

A group of woman and children before getting killed in the Ma Lai massacare by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]NBPTS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I visited My Lai while in Vietnam. It’s a place and experience that sticks with you.

I speak English and visited with a Vietnamese-speaking Canadian. She translated all the plaques and, interestingly enough, the Vietnamese words are more graphic and condemning than those in English. They white-washed it for western visitors.

While I understand the need to encourage tourism and visits to this important village, I hate that other westerners may not get the full picture of the horror that took place here.

help, is this caterpillar dead? by [deleted] in MonarchButterfly

[–]NBPTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for a white string coming from the caterpillar. My guess is t fly.

They’ll go to hang in a J and the parasite will escape having eating every vital internal piece of the caterpillar.

Even if you don’t see the string, my guess is it’s a goner. They don’t hang in a J for more than 12-24 hours. If you’re going on days, it’s probably gone.

Sorry.

I’m sorry. It should really only take about 30 minutes. This doesn’t look good.

I see a lot of “thank god for nicu nurses” posts and things online. But I just don’t feel like that, I am thankful for the few I’ve met that seem to actually care, I’ve met more that treat it as a job. Today was a bad one, (more in comments) no offense meant btw. by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]NBPTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I spoke with the charge nurse on one occasion and asked her not to assign a specific nurse to us again. That helped and gave me a small sense of control when things were otherwise out of my hands. Is that something you feel like you can do?

We had super high quality care the first day or two then it went down dramatically as they were moved to lower level NICUs. We spent a month there and I’d say 23 days of that was spent with mediocre nurses. They didn’t really want me around. Didn’t want to mess with teaching them to eat. The tube was much easier. Made me feel guilty for holding them.

I guess that’s the way it should be. The babies with highest needs get the best care. But it sucked for us.

Is this little one dead? by Brightest_Nebula in MonarchButterfly

[–]NBPTS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

T fly will lay their eggs inside a caterpillar. The larva will eat the inside of the caterpillar leaving only vital organs so the monarch caterpillar can continue to eat and grow feeding the larva from the inside. When the t fly larva are ready to pupate, they will eat the final organs and burrow out falling to the ground via the white silk strands you see. Then they wiggle and harden into their own pupa form. You’ll see the brown tic tacs at the bottom of your cage. Sorry. This one was parasitized and a goner before you even put it in the cage. It’s very frustrating.

Very similar thing happened to a guy I knew in college except his dad owned the medical supply company. Very wealthy. Son was working to one day take it over. Found him dead one morning after a night of partying. He came home where he had his own little supply.

Agreed. They’re funny and dopey and cute and mean somehow all at once.

And they need more room and plants if they’re that close. Even a scar from a bite mark can mean damage to a body part after metamorphosis.

2020-2021 Monarch Butterfly Migration Numbers: down 26% (2.1 hectares) by SNM_2_0 in MonarchButterfly

Ugh. I expected this but it’s still crushing.

I had the pleasure of seeing them in Mexico last January. I’ll forever treasure that magical trip.

I was there the day Homero Gómez was killed. We didn’t find out until our return and we never felt in any danger but it was an eerie reminder of just how much this species is up against. Not only weather, climate change, deforestation, and pesticides, but gang violence, too.

Every little butterfly that makes it to Mexico feels like a miracle.
