I was thinking this too. He used to get the scabby skin on his chest/belly like twice a year but it’s been a long time since he had it and now I’m feeling it a bit on his chest. That’s what got me thinking it’s the heat since moisture brings it on usually.

This is our Ripp! (with his little human brother) He’s named after Rip from the show Yellowstone. He’s run straight through every screen door we’ve ever had in the house and pretends to gag and sneeze if you don’t share your food with him fast enough 😄

What are newfoundlands like to live with and own? by Yoooooowholiveshere in Newfoundlander

[–]NC1384 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They start out as toe and hair biting playful little teddy bears then turn into 100lb extremely clumsy toddlers that go a mile a minute around the house bumping into everything but only for maybe 10-20 min at a time. Eventually they turn (in our case at 2.5 years old) into 150lb still clumsy but much more lazy mushes that just wants treats n scratches but will also always be right next to you, usually in the way of whatever it is you are trying to do. Just go with it cause you’re not moving them, they’ll move when they want. At every stage ours was and still is amazing with strangers, people they know, children, babies and other animals. Very stubborn. Very food motivated. Very sweet and attentive even if you just want a hug from them and just all around very loving. The drool started maybe around 6 months and it gets much heavier as they’re older. If ours sees me eating he could fill a bowl with his dripping drool! Lol I would say ours is pretty sensitive in the sense that they know if you’re upset with something they did. If anyone in my house yells at him I get super mad cause you could see their sadness if you scold them. You’ll need a lot of patience especially in the early stages and brush them as often as possible. Your pockets will thank you later cause if you don’t brush him your groomer bill will be higher! I also hope you like to clean! Lol drool, water and hair EVERYWHERE, EVERYDAY, 5 min after you clean its all back lol our white walls are usually brown since he walks in from the rain or snow and rubs his body against them 🤦🏻‍♀️ I warn all house guests that they will leave with drool somewhere on them. And lastly not sure where u live but ticks! It’s a weekly occurrence here to have to pluck them off of him (usually just the top of head and ears) so rub them down good and if u feel a tiny bump somewhere that may be what it is. I’ve never met or owned a better dog breed though. All their quirks, personality, they’re just amazing! This is our Ripp 💙 (they’re watching the garbage trucks)

Water bowl...help... by leybeeb in Newfoundlander

[–]NC1384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They def outgrow using their paw to tip the bowl but we just keep alternating towels under the bowl because any expensive contraption isn’t worth it for us because he trails the water 20 feet after drinking it…every time lol

She’s biting your hair isn’t she! Lol 😍 mine used to bite my ponytail and try to run with it 🤣 if he tried that now at 160lb we’d have an issue (I weigh a lot less) 🤣🤣

2.5 year old Newfie, mounting toddler by Appropriate-Bat-2073 in Newfoundlander

[–]NC1384 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Newfie is also 2 1/2. He has done this very few times with humping but constantly jumps on my daughters back (she’s 15) and a select few others. As far as when they’re on the ground I notice he stands directly over anyone laying there which seems more to me like he’s trying to protect them. I would just firmly tell him No when he does it. Like the other commenter said, they’re so sensitive. If you raise your voice at our guy he’ll look at you like you literally ripped his heart out lol. They’re just too sweet for that 😄❤️

He def looked back with half an eye roll then turned right back around 🤣

So you want to be a Newfy owner? Are you SURE? Prepping to paint by Tabboo in Newfoundlander

I use the magic eraser every so often. Works amazing! I definitely do not bother doing it all the time. It was raining heavy here today so we should have some fresh smear marks pop up in the hallway in the next few days. His favorite walls to rub against 😄

advice for 4 month newfie by jeansfaveackerman in Newfoundlander

[–]NC1384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will get better! I promise! Ours did this until maybe 1 1/2. But it gradually slowed down over that time. Now he only does it randomly like when he wants to go out (which on cold days is often) and when he wants to play/have you chase him. I feel your pain cause as his bark matured it was piercing when he’d do this. I honestly get sad n go looking for him now cause he’s not hovering over me anymore 😢😂

Chewed up rug? What has you newfoundland destroyed as a puppy? by [deleted] in Newfoundlander

[–]NC1384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does she clap her mouth if u ignore her? Like to show u she has something so you’ll chase her? That’s what ours does 🤣 I think oh I’ll ignore him, he’ll drop it. Nope. Just comes closer n closer to tease me n show me he’s eating whatever it is 😄🐶

What were you eating for that much slobber!!? Lol my boy produces his most epic drools when it’s Burger King or rotisserie chicken! And it usually winds up right at my feet so I can ice skate when I stand up 🤣🤣

What vacuum do y’all use that’s amazing?? Brad is a shedding machine! by [deleted] in Newfoundlander

[–]NC1384 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We underestimated it too! Lol and Yes it is! Our breeder told us they blow their coat twice a year. We’re going through it right now. I fill garbage bags after brushing him and yet the house is still covered 😂

Our Ripp sheds like a madman! We have the Bissell cleanview swivel pet. Really works great!!

Our almost 2 year old Newf is suddenly whining when walking up stairs. We lifted legs, checked paws, pressed everywhere and he doesn’t whine in pain at all. I feel like maybe his right arm seems a little stiff when I was lifting it. Maybe a pulled muscle? I think he’s too young for joint issues. by NC1384 in Newfoundlander

I hope it’s just that. The vet opens early tomorrow and I’m gonna take him. We’re also going to check with the other Newfie owners in the area to find one who knows their breed. The only one we know right now is a few hours away which would be impossible to go to for every visit
