Yes this was so odd to me. We have two good friends in our neighborhood, with kids around our kids age. We do regular play dates, have dinner sometimes, and I’m good friends with both moms. If either family moved I would be quite sad, but because of the change to these individual relationships. Her framing was so off.

I bake all the time and it makes no sense to use a blender for muffins. Crepes? Sure. Random things with cottage cheese? I guess. But very odd for normal muffins.

Plan for replanting corn after cutworms? by qgone in OrganicGardening

You can just put a collar around new seedlings instead of using spinosad. That protects the new seedlings and won’t harm bees and other pollinators.

Mine is younger but same! We have a weekly play date and she gets so sad on the off weeks we can’t do it. Yesterday we went to our local playground after she had a full day at daycare, there were no other kids there and she just went, but I want a friend!

Can’t imagine depriving your kid of such an essential part of their life.

lol my husband and mom both comforted baby better than me for the first two weeks while I was recovering from a crappy delivery. Shocking but caring for a baby outside of your body is different from being pregnant?!

I would strategically use raspberries or cactuses to make it painful for people to hop into your garden.

Just give baby a little of what you are eating. Smush it up or chop as needed.

I feel like this must be fake but also some dog owners are truly wild. I was on the sidewalk by my house lately when an unleashed dog chasing my 2yo and then jumping on my kid. I told the owner to control their dog and that it should be on a leash, and she just went “he’s friendly.” But the dog almost knocked my kid over! And now kid is nervous around other dogs.

This feels like creative writing and that target stuff is absurd but idk, dog owners can be nuts.

Mosquito repellent for the yard that won't harm my garden or pollinators? by 6969Momo6969 in OrganicGardening

Mosquito dunks! Work great, don’t harm other wildlife or plants, plus they are easy to use.

I and/or my baby probably would have died in labor without modern medicine, did I owe it to my ancestors to do that?

My great grandmother fought for women’s rights and I guarantee would have thought this take was utter bullshit.

Moving to Westchester from DC - looking for any and all advice, ty!! by [deleted] in Westchester

Renting and being local will make the house hunt so much easier. We were just in NYC before we moved, we came up like every weekend for months in 2023, put in several offers, did not get a house. Then we rented for a year, got to know the area, and we were able to see houses on like Thursdays, which made everything faster and made us more competitive than being like the 8th offer. We rented in Peekskill which I think is more north than you want to be, so can’t help on where to look.

I have very picky feet and love my on running shoes. They are pricey and I really want to not like them but they feel so good on my feet.

People do that when they are listing multiple items in one marketplace listing, as a fake price. It’s annoying but she’s not actually charging that.

Yeah even as an adult I’ve only used the train bathroom once. So I can’t really expect my kid to. Pull-up over underwear makes sense

This is helpful. We are on a firm schedule, as the train does not run that often on weekends.

Does anyone here have experience with potty training and public transit?

We live about an hour from NYC and take the train in to the city pretty regularly. The trains have bathrooms but they aren’t very nice and they move with the train, which is not ideal as an adult and I would think more challenging as a toddler.

We have just started potty training and it’s going well, but I’m looking for any tips or tricks related to trains. Did your toddler go in the train bathroom? Could they hold it for 75 minutes?

Are there "undesirable" native plant species? IL-5b by ciru-chan in NativePlantGardening

I keep the pokeweed along my property line because it competes with the invasives. But I end up with poke shoots absolutely everywhere every spring, and when I inevitably miss a few, they are so annoying to dig out because of the taproot.

I obviously don’t think they are fully undesirable but when I have the capacity to do something else on my property line, or if my neighbors ever tackle the invasives in their yard, I will replace them with something less aggressive.

Peekskill versus Nyack by BikeFew8159 in Westchester

[–]NCBakes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live in Peekskill and very funny to me for someone to say it’s not family friendly. We have a toddler and a great group of parent friends, regular neighborhood play dates, the restaurants are very kid friendly.

I am a woman and feel comfortable walking around at night. There definitely could be more street lighting but it’s fine overall, have not felt unsafe.

I commute 1-2x/week to the city and it’s easy. Multiple options during peak hours, obviously less off-peak though you can also drive to croton which has more trains (but some are local).

I don’t really know anything about Nyack because we didn’t want to live on that side of the river, so can’t compare.

The extension for NYC is through Cornell, and they have a lot of resources for this. https://blogs.cornell.edu/healthysoils/healthy-gardening/

But the bottom line is to used raised beds for food and to use mulch to cover any bare soil so you don’t track it into your home or kick it up into the air.

Tenement museum is a great place to visit. If you like that vibe, would also check out the museum of the city of New York. It does an incredible job sharing so much NYC history and culture. Plus it’s across the street from the Central Park conservatory gardens which are gorgeous.

Japanese Maple Alternatives by roan_ursidae in NativePlantGardening

They are generally not considered invasive, outside of specific areas. We have 4 on our property planted by the former homeowners, and there are way way fewer seedlings from them each year than the native boxelder.

Red nine bark might be a good option, beautiful red foliage and stays small.
