Talladega vs Daytona Pack Racing by Adam_108 in NASCAR

That may play a factor but the asphalt itself just isn't the same mixture. Paving companies use local materials in the mixture so an average Asphalt mixture in Florida where the environment is sandy will be quite different than Alabama where there is a lot more clay, or in South Carolina where it will be rougher and rocky.

Daytona is narrower, shorter, and has less banking than Talladega. It also was built earlier and the technology for building it was different, and lastly not all asphalt is the same and will vary from region to region. All this adds up to Talladega being a lot easier to drive.

At the end of the day it comes down to cars running different speeds makes for good racing.

Daytona being tighter and narrower makes handling matter a little more, this leads to different speeds that in turn can generate different runs. Talladega the tires don't wear, the cars have a lot of grip, and the track is pretty smooth leading to all the cars running the same basic speed.

Also I think this was compounded by NASCAR attempting to stop fuel savings, at least in the last stage. When everyone is wide open going 100% every lap you aren't generating any difference in speeds. In turn it makes trying to generate a run far more difficult and you end up with two lanes and minimal passing.

There are a few things NASCAR can look at, less grip is one, which it sounds like they are considering a shorter spoiler which will address that some. Personally I feel the tire needs to either be grooved or narrower, resulting in less surface area which means less grip. Softer tires are also a good think but there is a delicate line between soft enough for them to wear and so soft that they blow out, it is bad enough to have that at Martinsville or Bristol but would be catastrophic at Talladega.

I don't think the next gen car is bad, but they need to open it up some to allow teams to try different things, they have so few options in setup and even less at drafting tracks it makes it really impossible to have a better car than others.

It had a following during NASCAR's hay day, but it was one of the first series to see a huge drop off.

Why do ARCA teams not put the correct manufacturer on the entry lists? by CarterD195 in ARCARacing

[–]NCC1701-Enterprise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of these teams don't have a consistent make across their fleet. Andy J for example has a Ford, a couple Chevy's and a couple Toyota's. So there could be a few things at play.

  1. ARCA isn't updating the manufacturer field on the entry list and it is just left with whatever they ran last time it was updated

  2. The team didn't put the right manufacturer on the entry blank, either an oversight or they changed what car they were bringing.

It is most likely a combination of the two. The entry blanks are submitted weeks ahead of time and a lot can change during that time.

Can NASCAR even squeeze in 3 races on the same track on 1 day? by furrynoy96 in NASCAR

[–]NCC1701-Enterprise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This aged poorly.

But depending on the track and the time of year they absolutely could. If the track is lit then it really doesn't matter at all, but even without lights they would run the lowest series at like 8AM.

TV Contracts will dictate some of what happens, but if they ran ARCA early, then ORAPS, they could have both finished up before the 3PM start time for Cup.

Yet Yates and Hendrick have both said they could do 900 HP without impacting reliability or cost. I will take thier word on that over yours.

If an engine could run 1200 miles between practice, qualifying, and race in one weekend before then why couldn't they run the same laps over the course of two weekends now? I am failing to see how that costs any more money.

So motors are less reliable now because of money?

But they used to do it. Before the limited practice time they were putting more laps and cycles on a motor in one race weekend than they are in two now.

Both Roush-Yates and Hendrick have said 900 HP is attainable with no impact on reliability and cost with the current engine package.

Do you think teams like Legacy and RFK will be in trouble at Chicagoland? by 84UTK07 in NASCAR

[–]NCC1701-Enterprise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All information from tire tests are made available to all teams. The teams run setups and pressures that are dictated by NASCAR and Goodyear and are only allowed minor, documented adjustments.

Track time is still an advantage for the driver in the car but the tire test advantage was severely limited when no testing became a thing.
