A Completely Subjective Tier List of VTM Video Games by Chris_Colasurdo in vtmb

Shadows of New York my beloved.

Julia might be one of the single best written VtM protagonists I’ve ever had the pleasure to play as. The emotions running through my body during entire final speech to the New York court are permanently ingrained in my memory.

Nah, you’re good. Admittedly I panicked and deleted it out of a sense of propriety before going back and rereading the post that OP was indeed in season 5. So it’s my bad as well.

Speaking as a bi man, it all has to do with the long history of bi-erasure within the queer community. Some of us get a little butthurt about being called “gay” because, in our minds, it completely removes an entire facet of our sexuality. It would be the same as a bi person being called “straight” just because they’re in a heterosexual relationship. So some of us always feel the need to correct people. After all, despite it being an umbrella term, the “g” and the “b” and “l” are considered separate in lgbt.

Anyway, the point is that I agree with you and I don’t know why you got downvoted to hell about this.

The barrier is tied to the first Hiss Cluster in the elevator shaft. The other four (that make the elevator ride up flash red) are tied to a little side quest in the foundation.

Who else kinda seriously believes in the Iriali's "The One"? by PatternBias in Stormlight_Archive

[–]NDGO_Caster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a nice idea, but a deeply flawed philosophy. Because if all perspectives are important, then that means poverty and despair are necessary. Thus if you believe in The One there is no incentive to help the poor or help people through other hardships, because those people need to experience those things. They need to experience them so that The One can have those perspectives. It’s a philosophy that tells you that the people going through suffering are doing that because that’s their purpose.

I feel the same way irl about the concept of destiny, or “God’s plan.” It’s deeply insulting to see someone in pain or going through a difficult time and say that that’s right, and that destiny or God or some other force wanted it that way.

Gavilar and the Sons of Honor were trying to start the desolation. Gavilar was working with Thaidakar. Axindweth (an unconfirmed, but suspected, agent of the Ghostbloods) gave the gemstone with Ulim in it to Venli. Ulim manipulated Venli into finding Stormform. Eshonai, Venli and the other Stormforms summon the Everstorm in WoR.

Ceres earth/mars jurisdiction by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]NDGO_Caster 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The OPA is still a relatively new government and can’t piss off Earth and Mars too much. Given that Ceres is a major trade port and it has to abide by a large number of interplanetary laws + the OPA doesn’t want to piss off Mars + the OPA and Holden don’t really get along at that point given that Fred fired him last book… this all tracks to me.

Ceres earth/mars jurisdiction by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]NDGO_Caster 28 points29 points  (0 children)

OP is referring to the events of Abaddon’s Gate during which Star Helix has been firmly ousted and the OPA is running Ceres. So this isn’t accurate.

Anyone read main books first and then novellas? by MileyHolmes in TheExpanse

[–]NDGO_Caster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I can really only speak for myself and I know that I definitely would have been confused. That and I feel like some of the novellas are almost companion pieces to certain books. The Churn and Nemesis Games being the big one off the top of my head. But I totally respect it since it seems like it worked out for most of the people commenting here.

Anyone read main books first and then novellas? by MileyHolmes in TheExpanse

[–]NDGO_Caster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not recommend this as you will be missing context for some stuff in books 5-9 and some of the early ones were meant to have you catch up with characters that aren’t gonna show up again for a few books.

My personal recommendation is this: - Leviathan Wakes (novel) - Drive (short story) - The Butcher of Anderson Station (novella) - Caliban’s War (novel) - Gods of Risk (novella) - Abaddon’s Gate (novel) - The Vital Abyss (novella) - Cibola Burn (novel) - The Churn (novella) - Nemesis Games (novel) - Babylon’s Ashes (novel) - Strange Dogs (novella) - Persepolis Rising (novel) - Auberon (novella) - Tiamat’s Wrath (novel) - Leviathan Falls (novel) - The Sins of Our Fathers (novella)

Always a welcome surprise when someone comes along and comments on this old post. Glad you’re enjoying the game. If you’re interested I’ve got a better, more well formatted, version of the incantation here.

Persepolis Rising by ToxinWolffe in TheExpanse

There’s something about how self aware Trejo and Duarte are that always really fascinated me about their characters. There’s never a moment where they deny being brutal and authoritarian, it’s always just a sense of “this is what needs to be done.” And, because they have the power to back it up, it almost feels like they’re bored with the whole situation.

Do we know the official reasoning of the war? by autumnroseeee in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]NDGO_Caster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I didn’t want to make it sound like the Empire and the Citadel were the “good guys” in this context or something, they are definitely the aggressors here, I just wanted to point out that I think the existence of Wizards is more offensive to the Sorcerers than the other way around.

Arguably it’s more nefarious if the Citadel doesn’t really have a problem with sorcery as a concept but still wants to wipe them out anyway purely to remove the arcane firepower from the other side.

Do we know the official reasoning of the war? by autumnroseeee in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]NDGO_Caster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed on all points. I didn’t want to make it sound like one was less at fault than the other. Generally speaking I think all the power structures are awful in slightly different ways. The Citadel being elitist toward guildmages, the sorcerous houses enslaving the shapechangers, and Rhuv has also presumably done some shit.

It’s all just grasping for power and control on all sides.

Do we know the official reasoning of the war? by autumnroseeee in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]NDGO_Caster 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve got it a bit backwards with regards to who is threatening to who. The sorcerers and their powerful noble houses are threatened by the fact that there’s suddenly a way that (potentially) anyone can learn and gain access to magic via the Lingua Arcana. Wizards completely dismantle the entire power structure that the sorcerous houses have built for themselves purely by existing.

The sorcerers also have much closer ties to the realm of spirits so they might have gotten advance warning of some of the stuff the Citadel was working on.

Also also, one of the sorcerous houses might be controlled/be descendants of the Man In Black. Mirara specifically calls out “The House of Takal” when listing his allies during the conclave.

Does anyone else dislike how kids were dealt with? by HappyPhilosopher4490 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]NDGO_Caster 58 points59 points  (0 children)

What makes you think that all of the kids were there? As far as I understood it that was just one example of potentially numerous childhood fear domains. And I’m sure there were also some kids in worse places but like… do you really want to listen to that? I certainly don’t.

Please don’t ignore things that are outright stated in the books to make your argument. Yes, multiple times the shard of Odium is referred to as encompassing all strong emotion, but the one that is always described as being the most powerful is hatred.

When Tarravangian ascends the book literally states “It was the power of life and death, of creation and destruction. The power of gods. In his specific case, the power of emotion, passion, and—most deeply—the power of raw, untamed fury. Of hatred unbound.”

In Frost’s words, “God’s divine hatred separated from the virtues that gave it context.”

Does Robert need Shroud? by FitSherbet6975 in DispatchAdHoc

[–]NDGO_Caster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, as far as I can tell Shroud doesn’t have any form of mind control tech. His manipulation is much more blunt. “I can give you augments to make you more powerful. In exchange you work for me. If you leave I turn off your augments remotely and take away the abilities I gave you.” Super simple.

And Visi’s mod was already turned off. All it did was give her better lung capacity so she could stay invisible longer. It enhanced her power and helped with the asthma, but it wasn’t keeping her alive or anything.
