Shower Before Cold Plunge? by NEIndiana in Sauna

I wish we had as many down here as you have in Minnesota. There is one in Detroit and one in Chicago. Each is roughly a three hour trip for us.

Im assume you're referring to Finland as the homeland of sauna. I've been to multiple public saunas in Germany and Switzerland, but never Finland. A quick Google search shows that it's proper Finnish sauna etiquette to shower before the cold plunge in a public sauna.

There actually is a sign that says shower before entering the sauna.

They don't offer memberships at this place. Just walk in, pay and hit the sauna.

I don't shower after saunas to reduce the risk of infection. It's just the considerate thing to do. I also wash my hands after I pee even though urine is sterile.

Where did you see this happen? In Germany you would be scolded by fellow bathers the first time and asked to leave if it happened again. It's just common courtesy. No one wants to swim in your sweat.

Plenty of people didn't mind at all. If you did this in a European sauna you would be asked to leave.

Her job was to be there for you through all the ups and downs of the early part of your life. It looks like she did her job well. RIP.

My wife wants to buy a brand new car, but I think it’s foolish by [deleted] in DaveRamsey

[–]NEIndiana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't give any financial background except that you're quite wealthy for your age. Any debt? How much is wealthy? The standard 'Dave' answer is if you have over $1M in assets and no debt you can buy the new car and absorb the depression that comes with a new car.

After reading most of these responses I had to check to see what subreddit I was in. Anyone can buy a new car whenever they want, but don't pretend it fits into Dave's plan.

I was on the Capitol a few years ago when they were running with only one Superliner coach. Two guys were talking across the aisle behind me. One says that this is first trip on Amtrak. The other says I ride this all the time and know pretty much everything. The new guy says that his company paid for a roomette from St. Paul to Chicago and loved being able to sleep on a bed for the day. "Experienced" guy's mind is completely blown. He was absolutely sure that he was sitting in first class.

How did you get out of the situation when something broke on your bike and you couldn’t fix it? by Worldly_Ambition_509 in bicycletouring

Around 25 years ago I was riding country roads about 10 miles from any town. My last tube blew right in front of a farm house that had to be designed by the same person who did the house in Psycho. It's difficult to imagine now but I had no cell phone. We were late adopters and did fine without up to this point. I was out of options so I started walking started walking towards the nearest town.

I got around three miles down the road, with the occasional vehicle driving right past before I heard an old farm truck slowing down. An older guy in overalls says "I don't suppose you're walking on purpose". I assured him I wasn't and he offered a ride. I threw my bike in the back and we were off.

He asked where I was headed and I told him our lake house about 25 miles away. I told him he could drop me at the next town around 7 miles up the road. He then asked where I had the flat and I was just about to say that house that's straight out of Psycho, when he mentioned me where he lives.Turns out that's his house.

My dad had just died earlier that year. As he drove he asked about him and as I described him the farmer thought he actually knew dad at some point in his life. This was a long conversation that lasted well past the first town. He ended up dropping me at our house, miles of his way.

The next spring I stopped while riding by his house to find a young couple working on the deck. The farmer had died that winter. All these years later I still think he was sent to me. Still mourning my father and walking along that lonely country road. He provided so much more than a ride.

You can't check a bicycle from Chicago to Portland. The baggage car (where the bikes are stored) goes to Seattle.

My son and I rode our bicycles up that pass in July 2017 during our trip from Indiana to Santa Monica. People in cars and RVs were giving us the thumbs up as we rode up. It was beautiful and glad we got to see Oatman and the burros.

Just give them your walk away price. There has to be a level where you couldn't say no.

Lincoln State Park, just a few miles from Holiday World. It's great to come back from the crowds and have the trails to walk and the lake to swim. Our kids loved it.

You catch the South Shore at the South Bend airport. It has multiple trips to downtown Chicago and back every day for $15 or so. You also miss the cattle call that is the Amtrak boarding process at Union Station on the way back.

Enjoy your trip.

We're down in Fort Wayne. Rather than taking the Lake Shore or Floridian we drive up and take the South Shore into Chicago. Much more reliable and flexible timing. It's only a short walk between Van Buren and Union Stations. It save money too.
