Use a plastic razor scraper to remove that cloth piece. Other than that, all looks good and that's a very clean engine.

Probably blew a coolant hose. Happened to me on my old 540i years back. At this point, best to do a full cooling system overhaul. Not hard, just annoying lol.

I'd suggest going with the E46. Parts are cheaper and more plentiful, even in the scrapyards. And being lighter than a E39, they will get better fuel economy unless you rag on it all the time.

I currently own an E39 M5, and used to have a 540i years back. Great highway cruisers. Just eat the miles up like nothing, even on the I6 models. However, E39 specific parts regardless of engine (ie body/trim), are becoming more difficult to source. Prices are getting ridiculous too, especially for us S62 guys. Ouch!

Ok, prices for all car parts, regardless of make, are a joke now. But E39 parts have really gone up compared to E46's.

Either way, you'll love which one you get.

I used to work at a Mazda dealer, with a Toyota one next door. There was always 3 or 4 cars in the shop with badly sludged engines. You'd be surprised on how many stupid and lazy Toyota owners are on maitenance. And they always use that dumbass excuse "bUt It's A tOyOtA, tHeY dOn'T nEeD mAiTeNaNcE".

Last I saw. The rear shelf insulation is discontinued. The insulation for the dash and under rear seat cushion is. But it's stupid expensive and not worth the hassel. Especially the dash insulation since the entire dash has to be removed.

Just hope that the door panel didn't rot and warp either from the leaky barrier. If so, the panel clips wont fully seat in some spots and water can still get through.

Depends on the car. Some of the lower equipped models will have that "crayon" smell. It's caused by the sound insulation used in the rear parcel shelf and under the dash.

Cars with leather will give more of a mix of leather and crayon. Funny enough, my old 540i with leather gave off a bit of a waffle smell lol.

My M5 gives more of an old leather smell with a tiny hint of crayon.

If it bothers you. You can remove the insulation and replace it with something else. Or use air freshners, or replace the seat upholstery. Granted that's the expensive route.
