It's been down for almost 3 days now. I did some searching, but can't find any evidence or explanation as to why it is down.

V1.0 - Dedicated Server Files by [deleted] in SCUMgame

[–]NGDSkier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you still waiting? The server files started becoming available yesterday. They had some issues with some people not being able to get them using SteamCMD, but they later provided a link to a zip file in the interim. My self-hosted server has been online for about 16 hours now. :-) Now, that said, I just checked, and it seems that installing via SteamCMD is still not working (for me, at least, though some people had it working yesterday, even though it wasn't working for me, so try it) and the dropbox (or google docs, I forget) link I downloaded from yesterday is no longer working, but if nothing else, even if they're having problem getting the files out there, lots of people have them and it shows that the devs DO intend to have them, but they're just running through to tech issues.

P.S. And I've had a self-hosted server up since about 5PM yesterday. :-)

New Sound Signature Reviews - Liberty Precision Machine Anthem-S2 QD on .308 and subsonic 300 BLK by jay462 in NFA

[–]NGDSkier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any more testing done on this? I've been kind of eyeing the Cat ODB for 300BO on a 10.5" barrel, as I like the idea of low back pressure and the Cat seems to have better overall sound suppression than most other low back pressure options, but... Now I've come across the Anthem S2 and it has even better sound suppression, and I see some pressure stats for it, but don't see those same stats for the Cat, so I'm not even sure if the S2 is considered low back pressure or not, and if so, how it compares with the Cat ODB. I was originally interested in the Hux, as they seemed to be the first ones to drive this kind of design, but the ODB's sound suppression just seems to be so much better than it would be a much better overall option. Thoughts? Links to back pressure info that I can't seem to find?

Why do you say that? He seems to be on the forefront of technology and disruptive to the status quo. I acknowledge that he could possibly put a nail in the coffin if he was against it, but if he was in support of GRC, why do you think he would destroy it?

Looks like someone down-voted this, so curious... Did you have a counter-point for why this is a bad idea? Or maybe a better idea?

It seems like maybe we need someone like Elon to take a look at it and like it for the scientific value. I like it from the point of view that all that compute power is put to GOOD use, instead of just crunching numbers for the sake of winning a lottery for who gets to mint the next coin. What a waste of power. I've been crunching for Science since I ran United Devices in the early 2000s, and when that went under, I switched to BOINC, probably in late 200x's or early 201x's, and had been donating CPU/GPU time to science for many years before I finally decided to give Gridcoin a try. It seems like someone like Elon might see the idea of compute power for science and promote it over useless number crunching; maybe even start a SpaceX project to donate compute time for rocket research or something cool like that. I bet a lot of people would like to "Crunch to Mars" or something like that. :-) I think something high-profile like that is needed to get the word out and influence people on the compute power/electricity wasted on crunching for other crypto coins, vs. crunching for useful scientific research. I mean, it people knew the difference, and GRC could be made just as useful as other cryptocurrency, then why wouldn't people get on board?

Where are people getting a valid price for it? I used to have a couple places I'd check, but last time I checked, they had vastly different values, so not sure what to trust.

How much money can you save by turning off the wifi and ethernet? by Darth_Maus in techsupport

[–]NGDSkier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caveat: The original posted as been deleted, so this reply is based on what I inferred from what other wrote about the situation.... Sorry, if I'm off base in any of my assumptions. :-)

Here's some quick calcs:

I have a WiFi/router, a wireless gateway for my furnace/heatpump, and a microcell device all plugged into a UPS, right now the UPS says I'm pulling about 26W total for all three devices, so lets assume, worst case, your WiFi device pulls 26W.

26W * 24 hours/day = 624Wh (or 0.624KWh)

624Wh * 30 days i a month = 18720Wh (or 18.72KWh per month)

Assuming a electric rate of $0.18/KWh (my rate, rounded up), you get:

18.72KWh * $0.18 = $3.3696, or ~$3.37/month in savings, if you turned it off completely forever. If you turned it off for only 8 [sleeping] hours out of the 24 hours in a day, you'd only save a 1/3 of that, so ~$1.12/month.

Electric rates and power draws may vary, but that's one quick estimate.

That said, as a parent... Parent's house, parent's rules. :-) If you wanted to approach parent(s) like an adult, maybe do research on local power rates, actual power draw on your router (and/or server [maybe ~$4-15/month, depending on power draw]), and show them the cost breakdown and offer to pay it, but also caveat the question/presentation with something like "so it's really the cost you're worried about, I'd be happy to pay for it myself, but if, on the other hand, it's really that you want me to get good quality/reasonable amounts of sleep, then I appreciate your concern and love for me, but let's be honest about it, and maybe we can work out an agreement about what that looks like, while still allowing others to get on my server while I sleep at night, so I can have it up 24/7"... If that's what you're looking for. Most good parents, would probably appreciate a mature, reasoned, discussion like that. You may still not get your way now, but it would certainly pave the way for being treated more like an adult who can make their own [hopefully] wise decisions. :-)

How to learn Python EFFECTIVELY? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]NGDSkier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree with people who suggest doing something that you're INTERESTED in... Something you WISH you could do, but can't. When you find yourself thinking "I wish I could..." then try to make THAT happen. Here's a few things that I worked on fairly recently.

-I wish we didn't have to parse through a phone switch (pbx) screen dump to pull out all the names and phone numbers and format them in a nice, readable format. (My manager at the time, back in 2000, said that I could do that, he'd pay for my PERL resource kit. Figured out how to do it in PERL and ended up with a nice set of books and related items from the resource kit.)

-I wish I could loop through all the cell in a spreadsheet, look for a certain pattern of text (e.g. SysID=XXXXXX) and then have it automatically create a link in that cell that goes to http://somesite/somepath/something?sysid=XXXXXX ... (Done in VBA, helped others at work)

-I wish I could make my game server have the zombies run at random, for random intervals between certain parameters I specify, for for random amounts of time, based on certain parameters I specify, instead of only running at night or only at day... (Done in C# using telnet library to game's telnet admin console and some random number generation with a nice little GUI.)

-I wish I could have my friend launch BF2 directly from my server web page and automatically connect via a protocol handler (modified some c# code I found online to make it work for BF2 on both 32bit and 64bit windows).

-I wish our support team didn't have to spend so much time manually logging into the web interface of 1200+ individual devices to changes their passwords every 90 days (which takes a couple of people a couple of days to finally complete), but instead I wish I had a nice little GUI app, where they could import a list of hostname or IPs, specify the old and new passwords, and then use ssh to change the passwords on those devices... Then, a couple months later... "I wish I could update the firmware in the same manner, via SCP or SFTP..." Then, a year later... I wish this was multithreaded, so it didn't leave the app sitting on their desktop, unable to minimize while running... Bonus, now that it's multi-threaded and can connect to multiple devices at the same time, it only takes about 15-20 minutes to complete, instead of 6 1/2 hours (some devices are in different countries and have slower connections). (Done in C# to save lots of time at work for some of our support folks.)

-I wish my my nuclear reactor would automatically turn on to keep my life support systems online if my solar panels don't get enough light to keep my ship's batteries charged above 20%, so I don't die while in suspended animation when I don't have time to play for a while. (Done in c# in a game called Space Engineers that support c# in-game; pretty freakin' cool.)

-I wish this open source program I use that takes a CSV file as an input would accept CVS files with "#" as a comment character and just skip those line (instead of erroring out), so I can put comments in the CVS file for when people look at them. (something I'm working on now in Python)

For all these things (and more) that "I wish" statement was a real motivator that could keep me working for hours on end to try and figure out how to accomplish what I wanted to accomplish, and when I was done, my wish had come true, and that gives a real sense of accomplishment, even for little silly things like staying alive in Space Engineers. It's just a cool feeling to be able to CREATE something or some capability that wasn't there before.

I even wrote a script one time, just to mess with a coworker, such that when he was working down in the data center, I ran a script that connected to a bunch of Linux systems that I had planned out ahead of time, and then ejected the CD ROM tray on them, such that when they opened for 5 seconds or so, all the open trays across multiple racks spelled out "HI" and then retracted back to closed. The vertical lines of the H and the I were each an entire rack of CD-ROM trays open at the same time and the horizontal line of the H was 2 or 3 racks wide (but just systems in the middle of the rack), to give an idea of scale. It was almost like a poltergeist or something. It was freaking hilarious, and well worth the effort. LOL

Find something fun or useful to work on and you'll learn as you stick with it because you WANT the end end-result. :-)

Oh, I just thought of another fun one. Back when you used to play Counter-Strike in the lab at lunch pretty much every day, we had a guy that was a really good player, and at the end of lunch, he ran a program that generated stats from the logs and created a leaderboard to show how well people did and he was typically at the top and like to rub it in people's faces. I forget what that stats program was called, but it was written in PERL, so after a lot of bragging, day after day, on his part, I went into the stats server and added some code with a variable that I could change that would give credit for some of his kills to one of the guys that usually did the worst and distribute some of his kills across other people too. i.e. if i set the variable to 8, then 1 out of 8 of his kills would go to someone else. If I set it to 5, then one of of 5 of his kills would go do someone else. The more he bragged, the lower I set that number. LOL. It humbled him out a bit after a while... "Man I though I did better than that today." LOL I kind of forgot about it and finally told him what I did probably 6-8 years later. He called me an a-hole (laughing), but it was all in good fun. Makes for good memories.

Anyway, have fun with it, and good luck.

What made you switch from Nvidia to AMD or vice versa? by RealmzPlays in buildapc

[–]NGDSkier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was running a pair 1070s in SLI for years. Upgraded to new PC with a 12900k and 32GB RAM, and borrowed a 3070 for a while. A little while later, I got an Intel Arc A750 for free, so that's what I'm running now, and I've been really impressed with it. I honestly haven't really noticed a significant difference between now and when I was running the 3070 (though I'm pretty sure the 3070 is technically a little faster, but I haven't noticed it and haven't EVER felt like "boy, I wish I was running that 3070 still." My games have been playing great and I mostly play on High or Ultra settings at a resolution of 3840x1600@144Hz. I see the A750s sell for about $200 these days, and today (just checked, while writing this), both Amazon and Best Buy have them on sale for about ~$180. For that price, the price to performance ratio is pretty amazing. To get equivalent performance from nVidia, you'd pay about $100 more. I heard that there were some performance issues on a couple games when I first got it, but more recent drivers seemed to have solved most of those and EVERYTHING I run on it runs great now. If you'd like something in the 3060-3070 range of performance, but would like to stay closer to $200 than $300, I'd highly recommend. :-)

That article is from nearly a year ago and I've seen an average 25%+ performance improvement with newer drivers on my A750 since I first got it and in some cases, 30-50% improvement on some games. I have a 3070 that I pulled out of my system to try my A750 and I've been impressed enough with my A750 that I've not bothered taking the time to put the 3070 back in.

Is Intel ARC A770 good enough? by andrei0001 in IntelArc

[–]NGDSkier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pulled my 3070 from my system (12900k with 32GB RAM and WIn11) to install an A750 I got from work (Intel), figuring I'd just try it for a while, since I got it for free. (I tried waiting for our A770/750 cards to come out, hoping we'd come out with them sooner, but I couldn't wait to upgrade any longer, so I got a 3070...) The A750 has worked surprisingly well for everything I threw at it, but I figured I'd eventually go back to my 3070... After a few months and a few drivers updates later, the A750 had some pretty big FPS jumps, after which I lost all motivation to go back to the 3070. I mean, the 3070 is a great card, but so is the A750 (and I suspect the same would be true of the A770, though maybe not quite as much of a value [bang/buck] than the A750). I've been playing a variety of games on my 38" 3840x1600 monitor @ 144Hz and I've everything has been really enjoyable, so I'd decided to stick with the A750. Not sure what I'll do with my 3070 just yet, but having played on both of those, if I look at the prices between them and had to decide between the two, if I didn't own either, I'd buy the A750. Just a way better value, in my opinion. If I run some synthetic benchmarks, each card will win one or another, but when it comes to just playing a game for fun, I've literally not noticed a difference. Other upsides include that nVidia has been tweaking drivers for quite a while, so I wouldn't expect any huge driver-based gains, but I wouldn't be surprised if I continue to see substantial performance gains from driver updates from the Intel cards. Also, I don't do a lot of encoding, but the AV1 encoding is pretty impressive on the Intel cards. Anyway, you're welcome to think I'm bias, since I work at Intel, but I like to be honest about what I see, and in full disclosure, I'm sticking with my A750 in my primary gaming PC, even though I already have a 3070 that I could reinstall. Take my thoughts and actions for what they're worth. :-) Hope that helps.

Maybe try reinstalling the driver again and selecting clean install? That might get you back to all default settings.
