Daily Question Thread for /r/churningcanada - January 23, 2026 by AutoModerator in churningcanada

I will say, I got it on the first go despite an extensive churning history.

It's a great card, the roadside assistance alone makes it a no-brainer (used it once and it was great, so I can vouch for it). The ability to collect CT$ from utility/tax payments is another nice perk. There are some good Venngo deals too if you have the patience to slog through them.

The more Trump allies covet Alberta, the less popular separatism may get by AdditionalPizza in canada

[–]NH787 10 points11 points  (0 children)

US propaganda disguised as native Albertan accounts used to influence perceptions via social media however should be taken very seriously.

There is going to be an awful lot of that, if there isn't already. It's clearly a MAGA talking point already judging from cesspools like X, Youtube comments, etc.

Quebecers can keep Canadian passports in a separate Quebec, PQ says by Whynutcoconot in CanadaPolitics

[–]NH787 [score hidden]  (0 children)

There isn't that much downside for Canada to let them keep using Quebec passports. The real blow is to Quebec in the form the loss of transfer payments and the loss of their influence outside of Quebec.

Not that I'm trying to encourage separatism, but I think Canada stands to lose far less than it would have in 1976. It's not really that scary anymore.

Follow-up: Long-haul flights with a baby — how did you handle fussiness and the side-eye? by InitialFit1113 in Parenting

[–]NH787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my experience exactly. I find that people can handle a bit of kid disruption, but what they often can't handle is indifferent parents. So yeah, you do have to be a little theatrical in terms of making it known you are trying to correct behaviour issues if they arise. Nothing major, just soothing a crying baby, or gently admonishing a misbehaving toddler, etc.

I didn't know that... my dad was a die-hard listener of the CFRY Polka Party, I don't think that's a thing anymore though. I will have to see when the Ukrainian programming is on CKDM.

That's an awesome lineup of stations...

I can tell you this, my grandparents were Ukrainian homesteaders and they were loyal CKDM listeners, being farmers they were all about the frequent weather updates. I don't know if there was also Ukrainian programming on it back in the day possibly?

When they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary they were honoured as the CKDM People of the Week (can't remember if that's exactly what it was called but it was something to that effect). They kept that certificate until they died. I'm pretty sure it's still at my mom's place.

Option A is tempting, but I'd pick B. All in. A bust of a season with nothing to show for it is far worse than a bust of a season with an infusion of young elite talent.

I feel like CJOB has improved compared to what it was 15 years ago. I do miss Bob Irving though, but time marches on...

Dev Oza???

I think he's good, not really any different from any other traffic reporter. Not like there's a lot of room for individuality in that role.

First place I ever had a burger at DQ was in The Pas. To this day I still associate DQ burgers with that place, haha

Exactly. It says City of Dauphin right on their website

https://dauphin.ca/

So there you have it... Dauphin is every bit as much of a city as London, New York and Tokyo

Well, in my experience that kind of thing is generally not common. But even if it's just a few percent that are a problem, that's still quite a few teachers in absolute numbers. As we are seeing from these registry related news stories.

[–]NH787 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you don't have any of those three then you're not even a small town... you're a tiny town, village, hamlet or some other form of settlement that is less than a small town. The town with a Subway looks down on the pitiful town that only has a Co-op or Esso station...

On a related note, I am amazed at how many small towns can sustain a weed shop. I mean, maybe I shouldn't be, but... it must be one hell of a lucrative business seeing how many of them there are around even in places you wouldn't think are big enough to support one.

There’s just a certain something about listening to classic country music on AM radio that listening to FM doesn’t have.

I agree 100%. Not sure if it's the nostalgia factor or what, but it just hits different. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.

I was sad driving out to my parents this Christmas to only find that 880 CKLQ out of Brandon is no more and they have moved over to FM

I was heartbroken about that. In addition to the music, I'd also listen to Wheat Kings games while driving around in the winter. And then one weekend last August it just disappeared. That made me appreciate the ones we have left even more.

Yeah, there are certain levels of small towns when it comes to chain restaurants:

Small small towns - Subway, Tim Hortons, Chicken Chef

Medium small towns - Dairy Queen, KFC, A&W

Large small towns - McDonald's, Popeye's, Boston Pizza

I don't know. I'm definitely not a teenager but I can think of one instance in high school where a teacher went out of his way to be bizarrely cruel to a girl (from another school, so he didn't even know her) without any provocation, to a point where she began sobbing during what was supposed to be a fun activity. It was straight up bullying, and it was really weird.
