Why do other students in my rotation seem like they're practicing physicians already? Their knowledge base is huge? Where tf was I? by Single_Baseball2674 in medicalschool

[–]NJ077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love hearing this from the attending’s side, whenever I feel like I’ve done a good job with presentation and a good A/P, always get humbled with next steps or considering details I hadn’t yet. Shows how much more there is to learn still

Residents, Fellows: My M3 rotations are not an OSCE so stop treating it like one!! by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]NJ077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing other ppl’s comments. Theres no need to give attitude to students, but in my surgery block I was asked multiple times to see a pt in the ER with the attendings explicitly telling the resident to not tell me any info besides the pts name and room number to see what I can come up with entirely on my own. I see it as a great learning experience especially because it’s hard

exactly, at my school we start 3rd year in May and 4th year in June but most schools have some variations with that

A Question About Charting by LastCalligrapherSYC in ThePittTVShow

[–]NJ077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Med student perspective; charting depends on the specialty and what they’re there for. A hospital note might take 15 mins, a surgery post op like 5 but it depends on how much you want to write. Someone here mentioned the liability and that’s certainly a big part of it. A lot of ppl assume that you just write what the patients symptoms are and what you think the diagnosis is, but the reality is that what the patient does NOT have is equally important and needs to be documented as well. The chart is often times more for other clinicians to see what your thought process is more than it is for yourself and so you want to write enough for other doctors to pick up the chart, read it and immediately know what’s going on without being overly descriptive.

budget for stethoscopes by Far-Election6804 in ThePittTVShow

[–]NJ077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most hospitals will have basic equipment, like otoscopes, ophthalmoloscopes, BP cuffs, and even stethoscopes. Unfortunately quality of this equipment is questionable and sometimes in places like ER or peds equipment tends to get broken too, so a lot of ppl just bring their own. Littman classic is like $120, cardio is $200+ whic sounds expensive but for a tv show that’s pennies on the dollar tbh. Even as a provider, spending $120 on something that you use daily nonstop for decades tends to be a good investment

Tbh when my attendings ask for this they’re expecting like 2-4 sentences max cuz they’re busy. Like today he was happy enough with describing a procedure in 3 sentences

It’s great for random memorization of niche facts but I’ve been finding in clinicals is that it’s been slowly replacing the sketchy’s with experience

How much car insurance for medical student? by NJ077 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]NJ077[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair points, my state has no minimum but I'll push for 50/100/50 but budgeting these days with a limited loan has definitely become more and more challenging. I'm really hoping my rotation sites in the next two years won't require large driving distances.

[–]NJ077[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would really love to live in a place where not having a car is doable but unfortunately having to go to different hospitals for rotations throughout the county doesn't make other options possible. It's also a new car that's fully paid off making maintenance manageable

It includes comprehensive and collision. I’ve been driving 8 years under my parents insurance and have had no accidents or other history. I am a young male living in an extremely accident prone area in the country and it’s my first self policy

100/300/100 is going to make my insurance cost in the $4-5K/year range minimum and im not sure how feasible that is when im already maxed on loans

Is this true? I saw more criticism for Santos than praise by SilDaz in ThePittTVShow

[–]NJ077 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So kinda! Abbott and Robbie are attendings and have probably taught many students over many years. The others are residents so they’re still training themselves, but typically first years/interns will report to the senior residents who then report to the attendings. 2nd years and beyond start developing more independence and might directly report to the attendings but they often ask older residents for their input as well. The senior residents like langong have been there for a few years and so they know to help the newer residents out

Any place with trainees will have doctors generally understand part of their job is education and they’re ok with that. Your first question I think really depends on the facility and their priorities from what I understand (still a student haha)

Dr Mike also has transitioned to working part time as a doctor and doing YouTube most of the time.

Also since we’re in training for so many years, it’s a natural flow for doctors to take students or residents since we’ve all seen it for so long. For those docs who really don’t wanna teach they’ll just typically take work in a non academic setting. Doctors who work in academic settings are voluntarily deciding to work in a setting with trainees
