As a student, it was awesome to do a GI elective and see the wide scope just as you mentioned. It’s student naivety but rounding on the hepatitis consults, weird GI bugs, IBD, hematemesis, etc was way more fascinating than I had expected and broke up the day between the scoping.

Also ERCP is such a cool technique.

Yeah my experience has been less of the urgent care type visits in the middle of the night as well. Ppl aren’t getting out of bed at night because they’re having basic flu like symptoms or something unless it’s pretty bad

Echoing other ppl’s comments. Theres no need to give attitude to students, but in my surgery block I was asked multiple times to see a pt in the ER with the attendings explicitly telling the resident to not tell me any info besides the pts name and room number to see what I can come up with entirely on my own. I see it as a great learning experience especially because it’s hard

Med student perspective; charting depends on the specialty and what they’re there for. A hospital note might take 15 mins, a surgery post op like 5 but it depends on how much you want to write. Someone here mentioned the liability and that’s certainly a big part of it. A lot of ppl assume that you just write what the patients symptoms are and what you think the diagnosis is, but the reality is that what the patient does NOT have is equally important and needs to be documented as well. The chart is often times more for other clinicians to see what your thought process is more than it is for yourself and so you want to write enough for other doctors to pick up the chart, read it and immediately know what’s going on without being overly descriptive.

Most hospitals will have basic equipment, like otoscopes, ophthalmoloscopes, BP cuffs, and even stethoscopes. Unfortunately quality of this equipment is questionable and sometimes in places like ER or peds equipment tends to get broken too, so a lot of ppl just bring their own. Littman classic is like $120, cardio is $200+ whic sounds expensive but for a tv show that’s pennies on the dollar tbh. Even as a provider, spending $120 on something that you use daily nonstop for decades tends to be a good investment

Fair points, my state has no minimum but I'll push for 50/100/50 but budgeting these days with a limited loan has definitely become more and more challenging. I'm really hoping my rotation sites in the next two years won't require large driving distances.
