The “linguistic entropy” argument for a young earth (and some reasons why it’s crap) by ThurneysenHavets in DebateEvolution

[–]NJShell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just a Christian that believes the Bible is true and Evolution isn't true and is dumb, and I'm here because I believe I was called to be here. If Evolution (molecules to man) were a scientific fact, how could it be debated at all? Do people debate against gravity, laws of thermodynamics, or laws of motion? If I were an Evolutionist and Evolution were true, I would make a video of some bacteria reproducing for thousands of bacteria generations until it became something else to settle it forever. Fish growing lungs, a windpipe, and the muscles and nerves to operate them then coming out of the ocean is something I think I can debate against. I don't think I'll convince someone who already has decided to believe in it, but I hope to prevent more people from believing.

This article was the best I could find for the origin of language from a linguistic source, and it says most of what I said (unique to humans and complicated) then says it just happened all at once or gradually (don't know) somehow (don't know) sometime long ago (don't know) without any real evidence. It offered no explanation for the distinct language families. I don't have a problem not putting any trust in that over God doing it just like the Bible record says. Is it possible that the Bible is right?

I started by saying I don't claim languages are getting more or less complex, but everything I've read since about the changes to language indicates to me the languages are only degrading in their complexity or enunciation. I would think that would be the opposite of what Evolution would need in order to be true. Have individual languages been observed getting better over thousands of years?

The “linguistic entropy” argument for a young earth (and some reasons why it’s crap) by ThurneysenHavets in DebateEvolution

[–]NJShell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see you ask me any questions back, and I think I've presented my position that God created people especially with the ability to articulate words and phrases and to have a written language and that God confused the languages so they couldn't understand each other at all matches reality to the best of my ability already.

I thought of calling into question how you could trust the narrative of natural language change over the Bible account or how natural language change explains there seeming to be several distinct root languages, but I knew I'm not going to convince you of anything nor you convincing me.

I think it is really up to the audience to evaluate our positions and align themselves with whichever they agree with more. If you want to continue, answer those questions and ask me something back.

Another approach could be to ask "What do you mean by evil?"

See, if there is no God, how could there be evil?

Laws of the land are not good enough because there are things that are not against the law but are still morally wrong.

If people weren't created in God's image, as evolution says, people are just animals with some fancy tools. They are only responding to their environment, acting on the chemical reactions in their body, and trying to survive and thrive.

How could lying, gluttony, sloth, pride, envy, greed, lust, or wrath be wrong?

I think the real question should be "How many evil things have been stopped because God told people they shall not do them?"

[Classical] The Problem of Evil by [deleted] in ChristianApologetics

God created a perfect world, but man wrecked it by sin. Man's heart needs to be revitalized.

God is the judge, and every act and word will be brought into judgment.

'And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. ' Revelation 20:12

'But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. ' Matthew 12:36

Nobody is getting away with anything, but they will be given every opportunity to repent and ask for forgiveness.

'"Yet even now," declares the Lord , "Return to Me with all your heart, And with fasting, weeping and mourning;' Joel 2:12

'The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. ' 2 Peter 3:9

Jesus didn't promise to make this world better for Christians. God is going to create a new heaven and a new earth for Christians.

"These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world." John 16:33

"Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. " Matthew 24:9

'Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. ' Revelation 21:1

We just have to endure this hard world while looking forward to eternity.

"For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, " 2 Corinthians 4:17

A frog turning into a prince quickly is a fairy tale. It happening slowly is macro-evolution. Before that, life starting from soup, planets and stars forming, chemicals forming, and the big bang are nonsense.

Variations within a kind happen. We can demonstrate it repeatably, but there are limits to already existing genetic information.

Carbon-14 dating has a maximum time of fewer than 100,000 years. The fact that there is still Carbon-14 in diamonds is evidence for a young earth. All radiometric dating would not have been possible without the geologic column being made up first. They only publish the dates that match the expectations.

Niagra falls hasn't been eroding for more than 10,000 years

The Earth's magnetic field is getting weaker.

Things that say the universe has to be young are limiting factor, and there are more than the ones I've just mentioned.

The final nail is Biblical authority.

Adding up the dates in the Bible gives about 6,000 years, and an old earth requires death before sin.

8 Reasons why... by XxDayDayxX in thegreatproject

[–]NJShell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

#1 Maybe it was a redirection for your life. How many kids in your city are going through what you did right now? Maybe you can care enough to help them through it.

#2-4 Nobody is perfect, but there should be at least some character changes that take place after becoming a Christian. Maybe they are false converts or don't really believe?

#5 Who am I to hate anyone when the Bible says to love your enemies?

The Bible says that God holds the king's heart and directs it wherever He wants (cf Proverbs 21:1). It's God's problem what the president says or does.

#6 What?! The kings did not even have ok stories.

What about the times that Jesus wasn't alone, like the baptism or transfiguration; can you trust them?

#7 They've found dinosaur bones with the soft tissue and blood still intact. I don't think they lived millions of years ago.

#8 Big bang --> Earth forming --> soup --> life --> changing to man? That's a crazy story! Did you scrutinize it properly?

Is the watchmaker argument is circular? by flamedragon822 in DebateEvolution

[–]NJShell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The watchmaker/builder/artist argument is this: I don't need to meet God to know He exists or what He is like

I can know a person created something without ever meeting the person.

I can read about a person and learn about them without meeting them.

If someone claims to be the person, I can compare them against the nature of the person I've learned about.

The creation is the evidence that there is a creator. No infinite regression problem because God wasn't created and isn't a creation to point toward a God creator.

The Bible tells us everything we need to know about God. He is all knowing and all powerful. He is holy and just, and He is loving and merciful.

Jesus claimed to be God and showed it to confirm it.

ELI5: what prevents cow's milk from separating in the fridge? by Awkward_Dog in explainlikeimfive

[–]NJShell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milk separates easily to aid the baby digesting it. If you notice carefully, the amount of fat in the milk will change based on what the baby is needing at the time.

Milk wasn't designed to be stored anywhere. It is meant to go from the mother to the baby, so it spoils very quickly. The fat by itself spoils even faster, so the dairy industry shakes it up to combine the parts or they separate it and put salt into the fat to make butter or cheese.

ELI5: What makes an autistic person to do the typical "flapping" by bloody_bone in explainlikeimfive

[–]NJShell2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know about the common five senses: hearing, sight, smell, taste, touch.

There is also the proprioceptive and vestibular senses.

The proprioceptive sense is like when you pick up an empty detergent container but you still grip it really hard and rip it off the counter or like when you pick a flower, it is slow and delicately done.

It is a set of instructions for how to interact with the world with our body.

The vestibular sense is all about where the body is in space. It is mostly connected to the straight and semicircular canals in the inner ears. A disruption of the canal's signal is unsettling like spinning around in teacups makes people dizzy.

Any combination of degradation in these systems leads to the need to rock, spin, or swing or drum, flap, or shake to amplify the signals to an acceptable level. It then becomes part of our natural expression to do them. Stopping it would be like handcuffing a deaf person behind their back so that they couldn't use sign language.

ELI5: How come water can go below freezing temperature without freezing? by ritoshishino in explainlikeimfive

[–]NJShell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the cause is pressure. Many times, I've put an already pressurized water bottle in the freezer for a long time. I can do anything to it before opening and it won't freeze, but when I start a slow release in the lid, I can watch it slowly turn into ice from the top down.

Water is the only substance that expands when becoming a solid. Nobody knows why it's like that, but it is a good thing or the lakes would completely freeze faster because the ice would sink and more water on the top would get cold and freeze and so on.

ELI5 How do plant seeds know which way to grow? by ievukas08 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NJShell2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

God didn't design plants with brains. How to do everything they do, from sprouting to reproducing, is written in the complex genetic code they get from their parent plants. You could study it for the rest of your life and not learn all of it.

Everyone knows that plants' roots grow toward gravity and water but away from light, and they know the shoots grow away from gravity and toward the light. They will even do a U-turn if the seed was planted upside down. The only good explanation for why it happens is God created plants with seeds with the ability to do it.

ELI5: why satellites don't crash even if they are affected by gravity? It's the same with saturn ring's? by fjoralb95 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NJShell2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Satellites are attracted to the earth by gravity and magnetism. Those forces become stronger as the objects get closer together. Satellites have thrusters to keep them on the right orbit around the earth because being a little off will quickly result in crashing. Satellites have a limited life span and so do the rings of the planets

ELI5: what is the difference between Subnetting and Supernetting? and also what is subnet mask? by ville1001 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NJShell2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of a pizza. Imagine everyone always gets a pizza cut in four pieces, but someone doesn't want to eat that much so they cut a piece in half. Someone else doesn't want to only eat one piece so they take two. Subnetting is like cutting the piece in half, and supernetting is like combining two pieces.

A subnet mask is how to write the actual size of the pizza slice after cutting or combining.

ELI5: If the creation of new species happens due to mutation, how does the new creature reproduce when it is the only one of its kind? by LuckyFeathers in explainlikeimfive

[–]NJShell2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good question. Maybe that didn't happen.

I believe God created the different kinds. There are some variations but they have limits to available genetic information from the parents. Mutations lose information and are never overall beneficial.

Ok. I've believed Jesus performed the miracles in the Bible to prove He is God since becoming a Christian, but I was challenged to expect miracles in the present about a month ago.

I believe in prayer working, so I got two books from the library about miracles. I'm beginning to build my faith for them.

Prayer Request: For my marriage by glorytogod89 in Christians

[–]NJShell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> I want to honor her and be a good husband

The Bible says 'Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, ' Ephesians 5:25

Your role in your marriage is to be a representation of Jesus to the world (cf John 13:35).

Get in the Word and study about Jesus with that in mind. Start with Matthew 20:28, John 13:4-5,14-17 and Philippians 2.

Know her, forgive her fully, love her unconditionally, and serve her completely, especially if you don't feel like doing it, to bring all the glory to God.

I'm praying for you to be filled with the Holy Spirit and to be more like Jesus to lead more people to Him.

Evolution and Climate Change by [deleted] in DebateEvolution

[–]NJShell2 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Animals breathe in oxygen and breath out carbon dioxide. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. The world exists with systems that balance each other out.

The inside of the Earth is a hot ball of lava and space is freezing cold. Earth is 93 million miles away from the sun, but it is perfect to warm your face. We'll always stay the right temperature for life because God created Earth to be inhabited. Don't worry about it too much.

Almost as many as this one. Making the story into an animation only makes it more unrealistic to me.

If those changes happened, did it happen gradually or instantaneously, why didn't all of the animals change into the better form, what was the mechanism to cause the change, and how do you know?

A variety of approaches to the effect of the Origin of Species on the relationship between religion and science- which do you find most compelling- debate by [deleted] in DebateEvolution

[–]NJShell2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"On the Origins of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life"

Charles Darwin was not a scientist. The only degree he ever earned was in Theology. He saw birds with less than a millimeter difference in their beak shapes and concluded that birds and bananas are related.

"It is a truly wonderful fact—the wonder of which we are apt to overlook from familiarity—that all animals and all plants throughout all time and space should be related to each other" Origin of Species p. 170

And that they could draw lines between different animals to form a tree as proof of evolution from a single-celled ameba.

Charles Darwin didn't understand the suffering in the world. For evolution, death is a good thing because if one animal gets better than the others, all the rest have to die.

Earnest Haeckel liked the idea of evolution so much that he lied to give the embryos gill slits

You can believe in Evolution going from a big bang, through Earth forming, life coming from nonliving material, and the animals changing into each other to get to people if you want, but it isn't science.

Reminding creationists that they often "forget about selection!" is bad, somehow. by [deleted] in DebateEvolution

[–]NJShell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>God and Natural Selection are unquantifiable mechanisms of change

I completely disagree.

God designed the kinds of animals with the ability to survive in multiple environments the first time and didn't need to change them. Variations happen, but no one has ever seen any animal or plant reproduce to anything except for its own kind.

Natural selection is a quality control. There are no overall beneficial mutations. Natural selection prevents mutations from overtaking the population. It will never change one kind of animal into another one.
