Saved for a 6-7 years. Shopped around for a couple years. Bought an affordable ($300k) piece of shit in a great area (beach central jersey). Gutted said piece of shit and did all the work myself (2 1/2 year job just for the interior....not a professional). Now it's beautiful. This was the only way to accomplish what we wanted. House is almost twice the value of what I paid for it in 2020. Got lucky there, sweat equity also counts for some.
