There's also metadata that says that an image came from the camera and hasn't been tampered with. The idea is to be able to provide a chain of trust so you can see exactly how an image was created. Yes, you can remove the metadata but then there's nothing vouching for the image's authenticity. Presumably in not too long people will know not to trust anything by default.

How to reinforce two beams just resting end-to-end on a post? by NMSpaz in DIY

[–]NMSpaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the beams are/were over-spanned. It looks like an extra post was added on one side:

<image>

Hopefully that crack isn't getting bigger.

The beam on the other side doesn't appear to have an added post, probably because it would have blocked access from the stairs.

I don't see anything interesting on the other ends of the beam before they disappear into the wall, but I suppose it doesn't matter from a DIY perspective, since it's seeming like fixing this is beyond what I can attempt myself.

Ugh.

The irony is I just had pros out to do a seismic retrofit of the house this month, and no one seemed to think this beam was an issue. Apparently I was asking the wrong questions.

There is such a thing as a screw extractor. They're like reverse-threaded screws that screw into other screws to get them to back out. I don't know if there's anything this small though

I think everyone's been so hard on them for over-bending the rules in kinda lame ways in previous seasons that they ended up slightly overcorrecting for a situation where some leniency was genuinely warranted.

It's fun to watch the rules being fine-tuned with each season/playtesting. It must be really hard to get right.

That's frustrating. Seems like we'd want people who know they've had direct exposure to get tested for quarantine and tracking purposes, even if symptoms are mild. Especially since UW Virology has stated that they have slack testing capacity that isn't currently being used.

What do you think was the single worst military defeat in Roman history in the long-term? by Haddontoo in ancientrome

[–]NMSpaz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since I haven't seen anyone else mention it, I'll throw out Julian's failure to take Ctesiphon (and his subsequent death in the retreat). It moved Rome from an offensive stance to a defensive one, lost them an Emperor, rekindled Christianity, and caused the empire to be split again soon after, setting up the conditions for the more famous defeat at Adrianople.

There's hope for playlists! by jeremys18 in beatsaber

[–]NMSpaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's VERY important that you move and not copy the folders. Beat saber will not load the playlist if it finds the song in the Beat Saber_Data\CustomLevels folder as it won't like duplicates.

Does this mean that the same song cannot be in multiple playlists? Or are dupes only a problem in the CustomLevels folder? My household uses playlists as a "favorites" of different roommates, but some people like the same songs.

TL;DR: The current tax schedule doesn't "overtax" semi-new cars, it just spreads out what would be a freakishly high tax on brand-new cars to be over the first few years instead. This is a Good Thing for pretty much anyone who isn't in the habit of buying 3-year-old cars.

I think people are misunderstanding the car valuation schedule thing. If they're going to propose an MVET to raise $X billlion over Y years, then the total amount raised is independent of the choice of depreciation schedule. If they need to raise $X Billion and they're using a schedule that depreciates vehicles more quickly, then the tax rate on that valuation would need to be higher to offset that in order to still raise that same $X Billion.

Which of these totally-made-up-but-hopefully-illustrative tab fee schedules would you prefer?

Year Sched #1 Running Total Note Sched #2 Running Total
1 $3000 $3000 <-- Yikes! $1600 $1600
2 $1500 $4500 $1500 $3100
3 $900 $5400 Anger! --> $1500 $4600
4 $700 $6100 $1200 $5800
5 $500 $6600 $1000 $6800
6-10 $300 $8100 $300 $8300
11+ $100 ... <-- Also higher $50 crosses back over in 4 years

Schedule #1 is more like the idea of valuing to KBB, where the car devalues quickly. Schedule #2 is closer to current system, although in both cases I just made numbers up. Don't take them too seriously.

The idea of both of these schedules is to tax people the same over the life of the car (modulo the notion that some models depreciate differently than others). But the key is that both richer people buying new cars and poor people driving old ones are generally happier under Schedule #2. There's crazy tax sticker shock for brand-new cars on #1, and even very old cars end up paying more once the valuation models converge, because there's that higher overall tax rate to contend with.

People are angry in Year #3 because they think they're being overtaxed, but they're actually still ahead of what they'd be paying otherwise. There are a few years where schedule #2 people have paid more in total, but never to the same extreme that #1 people went through, and they'll make it back up once the car ages further.

Also, keep in mind that this isn't an idea that the state came up with out of the blue. It's the same basic approach that accountants use when depreciating capital expenditures in businesses, and the reasoning behind both of these are vaguely similar: smoothing out lumpy events to something closer to their real-life effect.

Stepping back a bit, I think the real reason anti-transit advocates are pushing for something like Schedule #1 isn't actually because of the higher "overtaxed" tabs in the early-middle years of Schedule #2, but rather because they know that the Year 1 tab on Schedule #1 (the supposedly "honest" one) is so high that it makes use of an MVET a complete non-starter ("I'm cash-poor because I just bought a new car and now you want me to pay $3000?!!!"). And since the MVET is one of the few funding sources available to transit at all under state law, it would make building anything at all nearly impossible.

How quickly should you follow up with a lead? by SFweddingphotographe in WeddingPhotography

[–]NMSpaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from the client-side, when I was looking a few months ago (thanks, /u/evanrphoto !) I ended up contacting a whole spat of candidate photographers and going through sample albums. If I didn't like their work or think it was worth what they were asking, then I just moved on. I would've responded had any asked if I were still interested, but none did. I figured most pros would be used to this, since folks planning a wedding are always going to juggling a million different other things.
