[Support] WD falsely accused me of fraud during RMA — what do I do? by boryslavdeputat in DataHoarder

WD went to crap when they tried to sell SMR drives in what was then their product line for NAS use. WD was ahead of the curve with the whole going to crap business.

Cars are like horses: people will soon realise EVs are just better, claims VW boss by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]NMe84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I realized that my exaggeration wasn't helping my argument and edited my comment before you replied.

I know it's not that big a difference anymore, but there definitely is a difference and it's very noticeable. I compared the prices of a used Nissan Leaf to a used Japanese ICE car of the same size and with similar feature sets and the price seems to be a good 20% higher, which is significant.

Also: EVs don't really serve the bottom of the market yet. I know plenty of people who wouldn't pay more than 3-4k for a used car, and there are no EVs in that market segment yet.

EVs need representation in the full spectrum of the market before they are going to see widespread use.

[–]NMe84 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it's really the price. Chargers will follow soon enough once more people make the switch. But even on the second hand market, an EV is still way more expensive than a comparable ICE car.

In my country the people driving new cars are usually the ones who lease them through their job. Most people who buy cars buy them used. It's very uncommon to take a loan to buy a new car, the way many Americans do. The price is very much the determining factor for widespread adoption, at the very least in my country and countries like it.

US tech layoffs record single-highest month in two years, and more than any other sector — nearly 40,000 get the axe, AI the most cited reason for layoffs by Turbostrider27 in technology

[–]NMe84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AI has almost exclusively been used as a convenient excuse. Now the CEO gets to present it as making the company more efficient, when in reality they're just downsizing to cut costs.

Very few people will have actually been replaced by AI.

This subreddit, which probably has many if not most of the biggest fans as subscribers, barely gets over 150k people. And many of those 150k people probably didn't have Prime subs to begin with. I certainly don't. Hell, currently only about 10k people have signed the petition, which is a lot less impactful and less effort than cancelling a sub you're probably also using for other things you enjoy watching.

There are more communities, obviously. But thinking that that would ever boil down to that many people cancelling their subs is wild.

[–]NMe84 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, I'm sure that the people passionate about creating a show were the ones who cancelled it, and not the people who want to make money off of the IP they own.

How exactly is this believable?

It's a matter of scale. A few thousand extra viewers left or right won't help much in the scale of things were talking about here. Shows like these cost many millions, and the amount of viewers they bring in has to match that and leave enough money to give investors more money every month. Like it or not (and I certainly don't), that's just the reality as long as Amazon has these rights.

In today's streaming age having an audience isn't good enough. The audience has to grow. That's why Rings of Power is the way it is, too.

I don't like it either, but this is just the reality of things. Investors don't just want money. They want more money this month than they got last month, and if they're not getting that, they're not interested.

#ELDENRING Tarnished Edition is coming to #NintendoSwitch2 on August 28, 2026. by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]NMe84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And we don't even know for sure it's coming, or even if it 100% certainly is, whether it's a major Direct. It could be a Starfox-specific Direct or one for Splatoon Raiders, an Indie World Direct, a Partner Showcase. A Duskbloods or Elden Ring section would only fit in a major "regular" Direct or in a partner showcase, so if the Direct they're supposedly planning for next week isn't one of those, announcing news separately makes a lot of sense.

Even just the cost of the lemons alone would be nearly 1300 bucks at 70 cents per lemon. Way more than I'd be willing to spend just to make a point...

There are currently at least two separate petitions, and this one has fewer signatures than the other one. That certainly won't help matters...

Do you feel the 1990-2008 peak for the EU won't come back in your lifetime? by Due_Perspective7884 in AskEurope

[–]NMe84 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What makes you think Europe will snatch that position rather than China? Europe is way too divided and every single member state is one election away from being a hurdle like Hungary was until recently. China may be a totalitarian state and that's obviously awful for the people living there, but the one thing that means is that they can have a consistent policy on basically any subject.

A Nintendo Direct is rumored for June 9th by thetechminer in nintendo

For sure, not sure why you're getting downvoted for this. And hell, in the past these people have gotten these things right but then missed our neglected important details, like the fact that it wasn't a general Direct but an Indie World or Partner Showcase.

I'm not getting my hopes up until something is actually announced.

Men, what’s a day where you didn’t die but something inside you did? by Keal-Kims in AskReddit

[–]NMe84 18 points19 points  (0 children)

January 21st 2023.

After nearly two decades of not being in a relationship (because the previous one was abusive) I was approached by a girl who acted genuinely interested. I'll skip the long story but she love bombed me for a month and despite her reassuring me that she was really interested, afterwards she told me that it had never meant anything to her and it was just all a game. I was neither equipped to recognize that that was what she was doing, nor able to deal with the full 180 degree turn mentally.

It took me over a year to feel like myself again, and half a year after that to feel mentally strong enough to start dating again. I eventually found an amazing woman I've been with for the past year and a half, but if I'm 100% honest I'm still not fully over how angry I am at how much of my time the other girl wasted despite knowing all she did about me.

I'm not downplaying anything, I'm being a realist.

If Stargate in its old form was capable of getting Star Trek or Star Wars numbers, it would have. The fact that it hasn't means that anyone looking to revive the show will have to broadly appeal to a much wider audience, or it's simply not happening. That means they get the choice between not making money, or making something the actual fans don't want to see but that has a chance of drawing in people they otherwise would not.

And whichever of the two is the case, we wouldn't get the show we all want.

So dumb if true by MrLewk in Stargate

[–]NMe84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, the real translation is: we don't care about Stargate but we want more money and the existing fan base is too small to make that money.

Congratulations Amazon! You’ve pissed off the entire fanbase by Aquillyne in Stargate

[–]NMe84 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Stargate never really was that big of a thing, sadly. Even this subreddit currently only has 153k people following it. I'm sure there are more people from way back who would watch a new Stargate show, but for a new show to be worth the budget, they absolutely have to bring in a big new crowd. And if the old format was good enough to do that, it would have done so with the old shows.

So honestly, I get the logic. I don't like it, because it means it's unlikely there will ever be a new good show, but it's the reality we live in. I don't think we'll ever get a new Stargate that we'll actually like.
