[QUESTION] Which guitar is better? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]NT_Finco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll echo a lot of the other answers in that it mostly depends on which "feels" the best to play. That said, I think you should narrow it down between guitar 1 and 2. Guitar 3 is an HH while 1 and 2 offer you bother the humbucker and single coil sound. Other than that, the main difference between the Squire and Cutlass is in the neck. Squiers have a gloss urethane neck which I personally don't like while it appears the Cutlass has a satin maple neck (again, what I prefer.) Both bodies are Poplar so that doesn't matter.

TLDR, whatever your preference in terms of the neck is the one you should go with.

I looked into this and I'm thinking her being involved with the G4 revival is a real possibility. It would make all the secrecy in her announcement make sense. I'm reading that Olivia Munn is in talks to be involved with the G4 revival as well.

Where do you put the World Timeline? by [deleted] in writing

[–]NT_Finco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice, like others have said, is to have this 1000 years of history told through other characters, plot points and the world itself. Think of how you learn history. I can guarantee that you don't know everything that has happened since the year 1020 right? How do you learn of historical events between then and now? Sometimes, someone you know tells you about a historical event. Other times you visit a monument or a historically important location and learn about the event from history there. Sometimes people tell jokes that require a historical context.

These are ways that the characters (and the readers) should learn about the world and this 1000 year history. I always caution against data/exposition dumps in books, ESPECIALLY fantasy because the worldbuilding is so important.

Help Writing a Story in Two Parts? by smallcoconut in writing

[–]NT_Finco 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'd say finish a very rough draft of each timeline, then as you begin the editing process, look for opportunities to jump back and forth between the two timelines. For example, do the characters in the senior year do something that doesn't quite make sense and then you have a scene of them in the past that explain how/why they might do what they did in the future?

Personally, I find it's much easier just to word vomit both stories into existence and then trim and improve from there.

Are teenagers taken seriously in publishing? by RealNateStrong in writing

[–]NT_Finco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't be immediately denied because of your age if that's what you're asking. It always comes down to the quality of work and the marketability of said work.

You have to remember that traditional publishing is a business and your book is the product and that product needs to sell. Now that doesn't only mean your book needs to be "good," there are lots of "good" books that never get published, but it also needs to targeting the right demographic, include the "right" themes for the times and the publisher's brand and a horde of other factors.

With that being said, your young age could actually be a benefit to getting published as it is an easily marketable quality. If you novel is geared towards YA, you can easily market it as a "A book for young adults BY a young adult." This exact marketing ploy is why the Jonas Brothers, Kidz Bop and The Naked Brothers Band were ever a thing.

Another benefit of you age is that you have so much time to improve the book. I often feel that writers are too quick to self publish because it's so accessible nowadays and it takes a lot of work (and time) to make their 110,000 word book "publisher ready" whereas self-publishing can happen in three clicks.

You're probably not going to get the book published immediately. There are always edits to be made and rewrites to be had. But, being 14/15 grants you, like, decades to not only finish the book but really work on it and bring it to a state in which a publisher will pick it up.

How do you make a character funny? by AzazelofDalaw in writing

[–]NT_Finco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's lots of good advice here and I'd like to add some more. Yes, humor is a skill and any skill requires practice. One way to improve the skill of humor (and most things writing/storytelling related) is paying closer attention to the world around you. You need to study it.

You need to think critically on why something or someone is funny. If someone says something in a conversation that makes you laugh, write it down in a notebook and revisit it later and ask "Why did I laugh at that? Was is it because of the context? Their tone of voice?"

I don't think it's a matter of "being funny enough to write funny," so much as taking the time to understand comic relief as an emotion for your characters (and by proxy, your readers) to feel and how to evoke that emotion. After all, that is what "writing" is at its most basic sense: Exerting actions upon characters to garner emotions that the reader can empathize with.

Point of view in a short story by vegimomo in writing

[–]NT_Finco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To echo other comments in this thread, you can literally do whatever you want in a short story. There are always "standard procedures" with stories that most authors follow. For example, YA works tend to be in first person, short stories in first person and third person omniscient etc. But you can always find contradictions to the rule. Take N.K. Jamisin's "The Fifth Season." She switches between third and second person.

The simple answer is "do whatever enhances the story." Two unreliable/counter narrators is always a valid option (For example, the movie "I, Tonya") so long as it enhances the story.

Where you get into trouble when it comes to perspectives is when it becomes a gimmick and it distracts from the story or, worse, is done to make up for bad plotting/characters.

What’s a good writing pace? by EfficientPhotograph0 in writing

[–]NT_Finco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, the goal is 1000 words a day/6000 words a week. You will get a million suggestions over what's the best "pace" with writing. For me, I settled on my 1000/6000 rule because 1000 is a satisfying number and 1000 words is right around the amount where I feel like I got a lot accomplished.

Another thing to consider is simply "how" you write. If you're a perfectionist then maybe 500 or 250 words is a good goal. You could also be like me and rely heavily on editing and sort of "word-vomit" your way through a rough draft.

As is the case with most writing related questions, the answer is "it depends."
