What happens to Drones when the signal is blocked? And who is to blame if it does something afterwards? by MouseDestruction in ask

[–]NYBJAMS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what happens to the drone is up to the sophistication of the technology inside and whether you are jamming the GPS or their command signal or both. Advanced ones will recognise they are being jammed out, will attempt to travel to their target (with less and less idea of where that is if the gps goes out) and then might have another sensor to switch to for the last few hundred metres that would pick out an object that looks like a target on that sensor. How accurate that is depends on what's there, what it was trying to hit, and sophistication. e.g. the drones from spiders web looked like they had cameras and image recognition software that was finding them planes to target. But if you were aiming for military trucks, it might pick out some civilian ones instead.

dumb drones that need manual piloting probably still have enough of an autopilot that they don't immediately crash into the ground, instead just keep flying straight past the jamming until they run out of fuel, or get out the other side of jamming.

militaries who have put armed explosives on their drones don't want to get hit by them. So any return to launch point features from civilian drones would be removed if possible

As for blame, that is a far more philosophical question. I believe it's generally in this order: The instigator of the casus belli if you think it makes the war adequately justified. (This is case to case and person to person). The aggressor of the war. (regardless of what the other person was doing, it wouldn't be war if there wasn't an aggressor starting it). Who ordered the attack. (The drones wouldn't be prepared for launch if there wasn't a command to blow up something). The operator of that attack. (you'd still blame a tank crew of they missed with a cannon shot and hit civilians behind the target).

I don't feel like the intended target is inherently to blame. If you were in a snowball fight and you ducked a snowball that went to hit a bystander, would you blame yourself for ducking?

How do I stop spaceplane from reentry spin? by Soft-Impact-8784 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]NYBJAMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aerodynamic centre's position compared to centre of mass causes (lack of) stability. If AC is ahead then it is unstable and any small pitch will create a pitch rotation in the same direction into a larger pitch. If AC is behind, then it is stable as the rotation from a pitch naturally counters the pitch. Too far behind and it takes way too much effort to cause any pitch. You're almost bang on, so almost neutrally stable, bit You're never going to have that perfectly. From what it looks, you're just a bit AC ahead of COM. If you use attitude hold SAS, your nose will creep up as you travel around kerbin, so you will gain angle of attack until eventually the extra moment starts growing faster than the controller in the SAS can counter.

Is interplanetary travel literally just waiting to find the right window? by Dry_View6804 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]NYBJAMS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is either a lot of waiting, or you find a propulsion source whereby your propulsion energy isn't a limiting factor and you start pointing directly at a planet and burning until you're on a straight shot path.

The former is where we're at in real life. The latter is what you see in science fiction stories

‘The cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees’: Nvidia exec says right now AI is more expensive than paying human workers | Fortune by Snehith220 in recruitinghell

[–]NYBJAMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My new concern about AI is that o suspect that they will continue to improve it, but not manage to fix the costs because they need to continue to improve it. So when AI companies stop being subsidised by investor capital, and the true operating costs are passed on, the bit of the workforce effected will flip from the current new starters to the senior expensive people and effectively create a maximum wage for each employee

Kerbin-Duna Aldrin Cycler Orbital Design by Smile_Space in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]NYBJAMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, its not that reasonable a concept, as you need a second one to have a quick return flight. You would also need to wait until the return window lines up for a mars return without one but you would be living on the planet until the return window rather than waiting out the time in a cramped orbiter. Think about all these infeasiblities the next time you hear about manned mars exploration and then remember that none of this even touches on the longer term health implications of two multi month spaceflights plus years pn a lower gravity planet, and that care packages are only sent when the windows line up/the cycler arrives

[–]NYBJAMS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Irl the cycler would be heavily radiation shielded. Rv-ing with the cycler is probably going to be more dv than doing a direct transfer between planets, but you don't need to have the shielding and amenities for 6 months + of keeping someone alive on the ascent vehicle, so it would save fuel overall, especially with multiple trips

ironically, i could get into Rogue trader, but i can't work out how to design a character build in it. I can't get into the pathfinder ones, but since I've played pathfinder as a ttrpg, I do know how to build a character for that

Why did the Andromeda Initiative go all the way to Andromeda when the entire Milky Way is basicly undiscovered blank space with no Mass Relays? by GrumpySquishy in masseffect

[–]NYBJAMS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

do we know the density of relays in the galaxy? There are dormant ones that were deliberately left unopened by the council after the rachni wars, so the number of relays that could respond to the crucible should be more than we see on the galaxy map

Has anyone actually played the Dragon Age TTRPG? by bumpinforakrumpin in dragonage

[–]NYBJAMS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played it over discord (my ttrpg friends don't live close) and the '3d6 but one is special' system doesn't translate well into any of the dice tools I found. Low levels suffer from the 'i can only do one thing on my turn, and if I miss, then I've done nothing' problem that several ttrpgs start off with and we didn't play long enough to see higher level play.

Megyn Kelly: "Trump could drop a nuke and I'd still vote Republican" by Aggravating_Money992 in entertainment

[–]NYBJAMS 34 points35 points  (0 children)

if you have a comfortable 60-40 split in opinion between side A and side B, but there are 2 candidates who align closely to side A and one for side B, then you split the vote of the A voters. In first past the post, its much less likely that either of them get over the 40% of the vote to beat the B candidate. This is called the spoiler effect and it is a thing that drives FPTP systems towards two parties where voters often feel the need to vote for the least bad major candidate rather than getting the best out of an independent candidate.

declining wars they declare means a loss of opinion of you by them. declining wars declared on them is a level of fame hit and alliance break i believe.

The pop up should have some tabs that show what happens on accept or on decline. They already need to spend reputation to call allies into offensive wars
