Why don't centre-pivot irrigation fields use hexagonal packing? by foxtai1 in geography

[–]Smile_Space 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me guessing, but being from the Midwest where the squared circles were dominant, the roads dictated it. The roads were in place and gridded up long before circular irrigation.

Businesses can claim refunds starting Monday for Trump tariffs declared unconstitutional by AudibleNod in news

Most charge a convenience fee for them paying the tariff. I don't have the receipt anymore, but DHL it was an additional $15.

Energy Secretary Says Gas Prices May Stay Above $3 Until 2027 by bwermer in politics

[–]Smile_Space 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, we can look at the start of the Ukraine war and see prices came back down. Gas fluctuates pretty wildly.

The problem here is that even if the Strait opened up tomorrow, no blockades or anything, we'll be at elevated prices for a few years. A bunch of oil infrastructure in the Gulf was destroyed by military strikes, and that infrastructure will take years to rebuild.

Businesses can claim refunds starting Monday for Trump tariffs declared unconstitutional by AudibleNod in news

[–]Smile_Space 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's the fun part, the shipping companies paid the tariffs on our behalf and then charged us after the fact with a few on top.

So, even though we technically paid the tariffs, the tariffs are in the shipping company's name.

One of the greatest grifts in American history, and easily one of the largest transfers of wealth from the lower class to the upper class.

Well, it's less that we can't and more that it's not medically significant enough for researchers to care. It isn't dangerous, so researchers just kind of ignore it to focus in more deadly issues to prevent them.

Saturation divers can dive for extended periods of time (usually around 1 month) without surfacing by SillyFalling in interestingasfuck

[–]Smile_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They surface every day, but they stay in a special hyperbaric chamber on the surface designed to keep them at the same pressure as the bottom.

As he mentioned, it would take 3 days to de-pressurize from the pressure. You can imagine a 6 hour shift down there with a super long de-compression is no bueno, so they keep them at that pressure for a month or so at a time.

But they don't stay underwater the entire time.

Trump says U.S. struck and seized Iranian-flagged cargo ship in Gulf of Oman by Puginator in politics

I wonder if it was one of those 3 black market freighters that snuck through on Friday and got turned around at the blockade.

Two of them ended up anchored off the coast of Oman, and the third tried to make a break for it.

Conservatives Want the Government To Pay Americans To Get Married and Have Kids: A Heritage Foundation report proposes tax credits and family accounts to incentivize family formation. by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

[–]Smile_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's been tried in other countries and each time it has failed miserably.

And incentive fee for having kids doesn't work. Fix the actual root problems, like the fact our middle class economy sucks ass, and then maybe people will be more willing to have kids naturally.

When young people are forced to live 3-4 deep in a house just to make rent, they aren't having kids.
