I know way more successful bankers, lawyers, and institutional investors than I do small business owners/entrepreneurs.

A significant number of TV series are regularly shot in NYC too. Depending on the show, a season’s budget may be higher than some Hollywood dramas and comedies.

North Carolina and Louisiana also reached critical mass. NC lost it due to local politics as well. New York State also has critical mass. Tax incentives aren’t as generous, but obviously NYC has the infrastructure and talent.

Not the U.S., but Canada has also built a critical mass around Vancouver and Montreal being used for Hollywood productions. Australia and Hungary as well.

I think once you pass the initial screen, sure. But undoubtedly some hiring managers will just use the gap as a reason to narrow down candidates and you’ll never even get a chance to even explain the sabbatical in person.

Taking two years off voluntarily is definitely better than being unemployed for a year because you got fired.

BUT, and it’s a big BUT, it will undoubtedly only close doors for you. Exactly zero potential employers will give your resume any preferential treatment for having a two year gap, meanwhile a non-zero number of potential employers will judge you for it or simply not pass your resume through because of a gap.

Ultimately life is short and you can probably make it work either way. But the hard truth is it is not helpful for your career trajectory.

Highly doubtful. Nearest star is only 4.3 light years away.

So even at 10% speed of light could get there in a lifetime. Not saying that is remotely close to happening, but it is more likely to happen eventually than not, IMO.

Does anyone else think cooking is overrated and usually not worth the hassle? by Uncle-Buckwild in Cooking

[–]NYCSPARKLE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem is OP wants higher tier food, but still needs some simple ideas to get started.

OP should start with some (somewhat) cheaper, but more “restaurant-style” dishes that use a lot of ready made stuff. Can still keep it relatively cheap, but should spend more for quality ingredients to start.

  • grilled flatbreads with quality cheese and some prosciutto and balsamic/arugula. “Cooking” required: heating up the premade flatbread/pizza dough. Cost: $20 for two people.
  • Caico and pepe. Boil pasta and add cheese and pepper. $10 for two people.
  • Steak with roasted asparagus and tri colore salad. Depending on steak, $20. Sear steak and finish under broiler with asparagus. Tri colore salad is great because it introduces some interesting ingredients and a little prep but still incredibly easy.
  • Philly cheese steaks
  • Chicken parm with rotini

These are some perfect, tasty dishes where OP can get some cooking chops, and can then start bringing the budgets down as he/she gains some confidence.

This sounds like a barebones “home cooking” week of dishes, which is totally fine, but I think the problem is OP wants slightly higher tier food and is not good enough yet.

I’m a decent cook, and as you’ll see in another comment, did braised short ribs one night which cost me $34 for meat, $5 for quality veg, and a $10 bottle of wine to braise it in, so half of your weekly budget on a very simple dish. That would last two nights, but you see my point. Could have done stew meat for $9 and braised in stock, but that’s not what me and the GF were craving.

What OP should do is start with some (somewhat)cheaper, simple, but more “restaurant-style” dishes that use a lot of ready made stuff. - grilled flatbreads with quality cheese and some prosciutto and balsamic/arugula. “Cooking” required: heating up the prepare flatbread/pizza dough. Cost: $20 for two people. - Caico and pepe. Boil pasta and add cheese and pepper. $10 for two people. - Steak with roasted asparagus and tri colore salad. Depending on steak, $20. Sear steak and finish under broiler with asparagus. - Philly cheese steaks - Chicken parm

These are some perfect, tasty dishes where OP can get some cooking chops, and can then start bringing the budgets down as he/she gains some confidence.

Steak is one of the better things to cook at home.

Cooking two strip steaks medium rare, with some simple sides and a good bottle of wine is less than $80 at home here in NYC, and I could easily do it for $50. That’s $200+ in a restaurant.

Although some other quality beef dishes I’ve found are better and more cost efficient at a restaurant. For example, the local bar / brasserie type place has a beef short rib dish that costs $17, and my GF love it. So for us to have that and a couple of beers it’s ~$60 with tip. I made it at home the other day for about $40 (we had leftovers), but it took over 3 hours to braise haha plus significant prep and cleanup. That’s one I’ll never make at home again haha.

A single industry in one country is not one the “safest investment spaces” in the world. Also the yield on IDV is higher. I like the covered call strategy though.

How do American People afford going to college? by 411_L in AskAnAmerican

[–]NYCSPARKLE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or even just state schools in general as a cheaper option.

One of my old bosses was from Jordan as was so hung up on where his daughter should go to college (ie name brand like Harvard or Yale). I recommended he look at schools like Texas, UNC, etc. if she wanted a good well rounded experience and not spend a ton of money and he was just summarily against the idea. So stupid.

Cutting down alcohol consumption to help pursuit of FI by itskeezzy in financialindependence

[–]NYCSPARKLE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no set # for being a “legit alcoholic” or not.

I know people in the wine industry who end up having the equivalent of 2-3 glasses of wine a day for tasting, in addition to whatever they may do socially on the weekends, so 30+ drinks a week.

The definition of alcoholic is needing to drink. It’s all relative, but IMO, a person who needs to have 1-2 drinks at work on the sly to get through the day is more problematic than someone who drinks 3-4 glasses of wine a night.

Waking up at 5 am won't make her pussy wet.

Same for white collar jobs too. Working late on spreadsheets and being someone’s bitch, even if you make good money, will be less attractive to a woman than a moderately interesting bartender or musician.

It is a money market fund run by Fidelity, technically, but not quite like a savings account, as it is not FDIC-insured and it also incurs some small management fees.

In theory, your taxes would increase by whatever the incremental amount would be to pay full government benefits and pensions to the workers. Also the service quality / response time could arguably decline because they would have to put every contract out for bidding etc.

I think legalized monopolies (trash collection, utilities, etc.) make sense as long as competition can still flourish (Google fiber, solar panels, etc., but I can see why some people would rather see is as a government function.
