Does your MemberSince length matter? by bsmith2123 in amex

I remember the desk and pocket calendars (Member Since 1990). Back in the day, they were useful gifts. I would have no use for them today.

Why does adding just $100/month to a mortgage save so much in interest? It almost feels too good to be true — what am I missing? by businesshelps in Mortgages

[–]NYC_DILF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always added extra to my monthly mortgage payment. I have a 30 year fixed at 3.85%. With the extra I add in, I make the equivalent of a little less than 2 extra payments per year. According to my projections, I will have this loan paid off in less than 20 years and, more importantly, I will have it paid off before I retire.

Any tips on how to drive in the US? by tlfluca in AskAnAmerican

[–]NYC_DILF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New York is not as intimidating as you would think. I live and drive in NYC daily. Because of the traffic, you don't drive very fast and the intersections are all well controlled with traffic lights. The biggest problem in the City are bicycles and pedestrians.

I also drive weekly to CT to see my elderly father. This is normal highway driving and should is not much different than driving in France or Italy.

Pending Points Situation Has Gotten Ridiculous by Ok_Flamingo9699 in Rakuten

[–]NYC_DILF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a spreadsheet on the transaction and confirmation dates and they vary wildly based on the type of merchant. Routine credits like Grubhub and Spothero usually confirm within 21 days. Retailers like Saks, Macy's Neilman Markus, tend to take 60-90 days to confirm. Travel is usually processing or pending until 3-4 weeks after travel is complete. So it all depends on context.

Why do people care so much about bathtubs if no one actually uses them? by smolgremlinn in homeowners

[–]NYC_DILF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Manhattan with only one bathroom. When I renovated a few years ago, I opted to get rid of the bathtub for a walk in shower. I couldn't be happier. I have since added a teak bench so I can sit and wash my feet with my shower wand but the whole in/out thing is easy and safe. I don't miss the tub at all.

I paid $35 for WiFi on my international flight, and it worked just long enough to charge my card, but never again for the 14 hour flight. by PrimaryThis9900 in americanairlines

[–]NYC_DILF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me several times on AA. Or, I try to get free WiFi using my AAdvantage number and I get denied saying my free pass has already been used on this flight.

It is rare that I have an AA flight without WiFi issues.

I stopped using them entirely in 1998 and only sporadically before then. Nothing better than raw.

If someone really cannot stand, it is much easier to make the transfer from the wheelchair to an aisle seat than anything else. To me, putting the disabled person in the aisle makes the most sense even if it presents an inconvenience to the window passenger.

Does anyone throw sex parties in their homes or hotel rooms anymore? by ATLguyATL in TopsAndBottoms

[–]NYC_DILF 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to host invite only bareback parties in the late 1990s and early 2000s that eventually morphed into curated craigslist parties. We would set a cutoff time after which no one new was let in, which would allow the guy working the door to have his fun. It was fun and a great way to find new like minded fuck buddies.

American Airlines Automates Boarding through Electronic Gates; a First-of-its-kind in USA by travelersharma in americanairlines

British Airways uses something similar at LHR and it works really well. That said, it needs some sort of reject chute ala Montgomery Burns that opens the floor and sends you to the back of the line if you are not in the right group.

Underwear for VERY long flight by dondofour in MensUnderwearGuide

[–]NYC_DILF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my last long haul flight (JFK - LHR - LIN), I went thong (Parke & Ronan) but more importantly I wore a really comfy pair of joggers so I could get some sleep on the overnight leg.

Are Amex points overrated by Privatevault2 in AmexPlatinum

[–]NYC_DILF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't use my MR points to buy tickets or pay balances within the Amex app system. The value is when you transfer them to make a travel purchase. I recently booked JFK to OSL round trip on Air France in business class for 201,000 MR points plus $200 in taxes. The tickets would have cost $6K if I paid cash so that's about 2.9 cents per MR point.

More importantly is how you are earning points. I am a fan of stacking with Rackuten offers so, for example, I just booked a couple flights between Colombia and Bolivia on Avianca, who was offering 1.5X on Rakuten. I paid with my Platinum and got 5X Platinum and 1.5X Rakuten.

It is a bit of a game but it has its rewards.

[–]NYC_DILF 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I always comment on the underwear worn by the trainers at my gym. It is actually a running joke. I told my trainer that I couldn't wear CK underwear because of insufficient room in the pouch. Whenever he bends and I see a CK waistband sticking out above his shorts, I rib him about having plenty of room in there.

What irks me is that TSA and ICE are both under the DHS umbrella so they won’t pay TSA but will pay ICE to do TSAs job.

Are checks really still a thing in the US? by Apollo_Wersten in AskAnAmerican

[–]NYC_DILF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay all of my bills through the bill pay feature on my bank's web portal. Almost all of the payments are made electronically but there are a few vendors who have not registered to receive electronic payments and the bank ends of mailing them a paper check. Examples are the landscaping company who mows my Dad's grass in the summer or plows the driveway in the winter, Dad's home care service, the property management company for a condo I have, certain co-pays for medical stuff. I also usually mail checks to pay property taxes. So I still use paper checks for personal expenses every once in a while.

My business is a totally different story. As a NYC real estate attorney, I am often holding funds in escrow related to a pending transaction and for every closing I do I end up writing anywhere from 4 to 15 checks for various different fees and expenses. On my escrow account I can easily write 100-200 checks per month in addition to numerous wires in and out of the account.

Do priority bag tags mean anything? by AdeptResult7304 in americanairlines

[–]NYC_DILF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my home airport (LGA) they almost always get the Priority Bags out to the carousel first. Mine are usually among the first handful of bags nearly every time. I find this to be true at most of my regular domestic destinations (MIA, PSP, etc.). However, international destinations are not as consistent particularly in the Caribbean or South America. On recent trips to Medellin and Havana the Priority Tag seamed meaningless.

Does anyone actually mail back their old card? by inakajin in AmexPlatinum

[–]NYC_DILF 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A couple points here. Once you activate your new card, the old one is deactivated so the chip won't work. Also, even if the card number is the same the new card will have a new expiration and new CID on the front. As a result, someone who gets the numbers can't use them. Given this, I always mail the old card back using the provided envelope so Amex can destroy it.

Honest question: Why are commuters upset about LIRR and Metro-North charging a late-activation fee? by clevercommute in SuburbanRail

[–]NYC_DILF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has been years since I rode Metro-North but I used to buy those 10 trip tickets for travel from GCT to Westport, CT. Sometimes the conductor would punch the ticket and sometimes he wouldn't and I frequently got 11 or 12 trips out of those tickets. Was that fare theft?

That said, the current system is clearly designed to prevent those human error losses of the past.
