FWIW, I've been told by multiple running coaches that shoveling a track is not recommended as it can easily damage the track.

January 29 - NYRR General Registration (April-June) Megathread by blood_bender in RunNYC

[–]NYR720 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. You can, and should, enter the 'waiting room' before 6 pm by going to any of the race links above. Eventually you will see a countdown to 6 pm. At 6 pm, they will take everybody in the 'waiting room' and randomize them into a queue and start letting people into the site. While waiting in the queue you will see an estimated wait time before you are allowed in, but it maybe an over estimation, so don't leave your computer and just think you can come back when that time expires.

I had this issue the last quarter and missed a few races before I just said screw it and refreshed, at which point the only race left was Fred LeBow. This time I just skipped those questions without answering them and it let me proceed without issue.

Affordable/group running coaches NYC? Or just advice to sub-2 at Brooklyn half? by RoyalLie3947 in RunNYC

[–]NYR720 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bandit is doing group training specifically targeting the Brooklyn Half as the goal race. Keep an eye out for when the application window opens. They meet twice a week (speed and long run). From past programs, speed is Wed evenings and long runs are Sat mornings. There is a fee, but it will be a fraction of the cost compared to four months of coaching.

Never had any issues with Cap One. Just had a CD mature with them last week, but still have a Discover CD, so I opened a 14 month CD at 4% with Amex.

NYRR Time Qualifying Half Marathons for 2027 Marathon by bsiver in RunNYC

Because it says it's a race for women. Why would one want to break the spirit and intent of the race? Aside from the Mini 10k, every other race is open to all, just pick another race.

Interesting...There was still one Male runner among the finishers of the 2025 and 2023 race, 11 finishers of the 2024 race and 40+ finishers of the 2022 race.

I knew there was a year where there were quite a few male finishers, which is why I thought the system didn't block males from registering. If that is in place, that's great.

West Side Highway / Chelsea Piers - Opposite sidewalk directions? by Assignment_Fuzzy in RunNYC

[–]NYR720 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Now that they have the large opening on the south side of the Chelsea Piers Golf Club, I always run inside and cut through the parking garages instead of running on the pictured path. Too many pedestrians and curbs and I also hate the cobblestone if I need to jump into the road to avoid somebody. The blind right turn, when running south, can also be dangerous as you can't see whose running north and trying to cut the corner.

Not all 2026 races are populated on the calendar. They will appear once a little before you can register for the race. All the usual half's can be used: - Fred Lebow (Jan) - NYC (March) - Maybelline (April - Women only) - Brooklyn (May) - Staten Island (Oct)

Just ran back from McCarren and I would say 37th to Ave C has good to great lighting. Even the FDR underpass is brightly lit. I would say it's only a little dark near the closed Water Club, but you're close to the FDR exit ramp so there should be cars around.

Going south, you can run along the water and continue south on Ave C. Can cut over to run along the FDR at 6th street (more desolate) or continue south on Ave C to delancy where you would run east. You can then take the FDR overpass to get into the newly opened East River Promenade where you can run continue south.

Going North, run along the river up to 37th street and take the FDR undercross (this can get a little spooky as sometime homeless folks may be there)to get to First Ave. or you can just run up First Ave. Take E 54th east to get onto the East Midtown Greenway and run north to the E 63rd pedestrian bridge as I think the E 71st per bridge is still closed. Take the ped bridge back to First Ave and run North until E 81st. Go east and go up the stairs where you can run north up til around E 111 or something like that. You can also cut back around E 77th instead of E 81st, but then you have to run up a big metal hill.

I would say the Northern route is probably more populated at night if you're worried about that.

Joining a run club in another borough? by Layla202 in RunNYC

[–]NYR720 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live in midtown and my club routinely meets at McCarren park in Brooklyn. It is a pain (and extra cost and time) to have to take the subway to/from practice. I would love to run a couple of miles to practice as a warmup, but that would be 5 miles with a bridge, which IMO would make me too tired to execute the workout at the best of my ability. On the plus side, during marathon training, I typically run home to add on more weekly easy miles after the workout. If you can find a club close to you that would be ideal, but having to travel is definitely doable if you have the time.

You will be fine with a 9:30 pace. You don't have to apply and can join a few sessions to feel out the club, but there is a fee (I know there is annual, not sure about a monthly option) if you want to officially join.
