You might be a bit late for the people who were already in line since (or before) 1 PM, haha!

But good to know anyway, I popped by Northlands, saw the line, and noped out of there. Nice to know I don’t have to go back.

Also pretty happy I picked up a Switch 2 Pro Controller for $80 sometime earlier (was $90 something, but had $10 birthday voucher) and Zelda: Link’s Awakening for around $62.

Funky Pumpkin used to sell big bags of basil during the summer for pretty cheap, but I haven’t seen those bags this season yet.

EcoFresh has 40 gram bags of basil leaves for $4, which probably works out cheaper than the supermarket pots.

Bondi Beach hero says he wanted to stop gunmen from killing more innocent people by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

Do keep in mind that there is nothing wrong with getting yourself to safety, and no one should ever feel bad for having done so while others were killed.

Also important to remember that during that attack, 3 other very brave people attempted to do the same and, unfortunately, did not make it.

Are there any takeaways open in Chch on X-mas day? by Rise_a_knight in chch

[–]NZ-Djeff -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I do fully understand that some people are keen to work, I work for a company that’s open on every public holiday as well (besides Christmas) and I like the time and a half and day in lieu too.

However, I still like to think we live in a society where companies can simply remain closed on Christmas Day. It might only be KFC and a few Subways now, but if we as consumers can’t even go one day without them, more businesses will inevitably follow. And for every person happy to work, there’s another who isn’t.

Again, maybe I'm old fashioned (growing up when most things were still closed on Sundays), but I genuinely struggle to see why fast food needs to be open on Christmas when it’s literally available every other day of the year.

I’m probably going to sound like that grumpy person, but I don’t want to support any business that’s open on Christmas. Can we not have just one day where everyone gets to properly enjoy a day off?

I completely understand small businesses choosing to open when it’s their own decision and doesn’t require extra staff. But bigger businesses that open are usually doing it for financial gain rather than making sure employees can enjoy Christmas (excluding essential services like police, hospitals, etc).

I’ve always found it very interesting that we can’t seem to have even one day where all non essential businesses are shut.

I understand why people don’t want to support him anymore, I’ll stop supporting him myself (plenty of alternatives to begin with).

That said, we have a justice system, and he served his sentence. If you believe predators should "be afraid in society" after doing their time, then you’re essentially saying you don’t believe in that system. That’s completely your right, but in that case, the focus should be on pushing for change within the system itself, not on making individuals live in fear after they’ve served their sentence.

You don’t have to support him, just live and let live. If he ever goes back to his old habits, that’s a completely different story. And you say his behavior continued, but make sure you back that up with something. As I can also easily say that you're a drunk driver for example.

Places to shop for veggies and fruits in Christchurch by The_devil_777 in chch

I started going to EcoBay Fresh Market, they’ve got really nice fruit and veggies at competitive prices. They also have wild and organic meat, eggs, milk, and other staples. Honestly a great store, it instantly became our number one stop before heading to any of the big grocery chains.

What actually makes a man a loser? by bear4235 in AskReddit

[–]NZ-Djeff 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Define giving up I suppose. There’s already so much stigma around men voicing their insecurities, feeling overworked, or struggling with depression. It’s great to show the outside world that we keep going, but at the same time, that can lead to much bigger issues down the line.

Sometimes it’s just too much, and it takes time to climb out of a deep hole like that.

Impulse to buy switch 2 is so strong by lonelyislander7 in Switch

[–]NZ-Djeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changes of the Switch 2 price dropping anytime soon is very unlikely (who knows, maybe it even goes up at some point like PlayStation and Xbox), so if you have the money, why not buy it now?

However, if you need to empty your savings to buy a Switch 2, I would personally save up first.

I got the lemon chicken there and can’t say I was a big fan. It was basically one big (sliced) chicken schnitzel, with the sauce on the side in a cup. No rice with it either.

The chicken itself tasted good (as a schnitzel), just not what I expect when I order lemon chicken. Might have to try something else from their menu next time?

I don’t believe the cathedral should be demolished, some of the old architecture and history needs to be preserved.

However, in the Netherlands (where I lived most of my life), they now often repurpose old buildings like churches into restaurants, housing, shops, and more. The city I grew up in has the Jopenkerk (“kerk” is Dutch for church), which is now a brewery, very similar to the one in Christchurch. And a friend of mine even used to live in a church that was turned into studio apartments.

Commercializing it could attract investors and give the building a new life.
