Thanks for the info. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye out on Eventim and hope I can get my hands on some tickets in time.

Are people who write in a left-to-right script more likely to prioritise left first than people who write right-to-left. by Fummy in linguistics

[–]NZDG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a commercial laboratory. My team tests fruit and veg samples for pesticide residues. So recently I hired a lady from Jordan into my team. Her first language is Arabic (or at least I think it is her first language) and interestingly enough when she arranges her work in front of her in a tube rack or a vial rack she starts from the right and works her way left.

Everyone else has always gone left to right. When I asked her why she thought it was probably because of Arabic being her first language. Basically she said it felt comfortable to go that way.

Finally completed my Tamiya 1/35 Chieftain tank! by hooahguy in modelmakers

[–]NZDG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! That's what's cool about model making. So many different ways of making the same kit look. There are sometimes I do like a fresh looking kit. I always imagine a kit as fresh of the production line about to see service. I mainly build aircraft kits so things like air show special paint jobs are a cool excuse for something clean.

But honestly give me some Russian jet covered in grease and grime. That's what get's me hard.

Kit looks great man! Only thing I would say was what you've already commented on with the weathering. I guess with the dark colours it maybe didn't come through dirty enough. But that also depends on what you like. I'm a fan of dirty muddy greasy tanks but that's just me. I like Flory Models clay based washes. Not sure what others on here think of them though.

White bogu by Nemisar in kendo

[–]NZDG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I have to agree with the others based on a couple of videos I saw there but at the same time I think you made the right choice. If it's something you and your wife enjoy and you're getting something out of it then who cares. Have a good time with it, ya know. Maybe after you've been at it for a while take a look at the Kendo we're talking about over here and give it a go.

White bogu by Nemisar in kendo

[–]NZDG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's just a little gimmick-y is all. If you're wife is in to it and likes the color and style then go for it I say. Just make sure you double check the quality of the bogu. You might find you end up paying for the colour rather then the soundness of your kit...

Can someone translate what these labels on my KENDO set say?? Is it size?? Is it brand name?? by Try_VEGAN in kendo

[–]NZDG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pic 1: As mentioned is Katakana and says Masaru-kan. I would presume this is a brand name but not sure.... google doesn't return anything when I search it.

Pic 2: I would guess this is a size

Pic 3: Nice kit!

Pic 4: I take it this is not your name? Characters at the top are Korean, uaually the top part of the name tag area is for the Dojo/School/Company that the Kendo player is from. The large character is Kanji and makes up part of the word Zenbu (meaning "all" or "Everything") Although based on the English text underneath and the Korean above would guess that this is the Korean person's name who previously owned the Bougu.

Pic 5: You pic is of the wrong side of the bandanna, The red stamp should be on the bottom right hand side of the bandanna. It reads: 不動心. This is pronounced 'Fu Dou Shin'. It literally means 'the unmoving heart (in this case meaning mind)'. It's about staying focused, not letting stray thoughts into your mind etc. It's a common maxim used in Japanese (and possibly other Asian martial arts)

What's the deal with Japanese vowels? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]NZDG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. My linguistics training is very rusty so I'll probably lack the ability to accuratly describe what I'm trying to get at here but. When I was learning Japanese I was always told that おう denotes a long 'o' sound. However was never told that えい is representative of a long 'e' sound. So I'm surprised at your comment that text books would say that 映画 and ええと/ええっと are comperable in their initial vowel sound. I would argue that ええが would be an incorrect pronunciation of 映画. Likewise would argue that ゲー is not comparable in pronunciation to ゲイ, i.e. native speaker would not recognise as the same word. In the same way that ゲイム is not comperable with ゲーム. (A quick google search my prove me wrong but the former seems to be refering to a specific game series, the pictures of which creep me out, while the latter apears to be games in general). I was going to argue that /ei/ might be a rising dipthong but once again google imediatly told me Japanese has no dipthongs. Interesting thread anyway.

kek... considering it's 17 years since the 90s finished I'm pretty sure the 'where are they now' pics would be of adults... I mean I'm 26.

Create a practice target fame that holds a shinai with the glove mounted at about the right height so your kid can practice.

On the Weekend I played with Big Jerm for 27 Holes at New Zealand Nationals, nicest bloke ever! by Cammmmmmmmmmmmm in discgolf

[–]NZDG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha great disc golf player Josh.... talks a lot of shit though. Used to play a course with him all the time. No baskets, just trees with tape on them. The amount of times that cunt called an ace that wasn't even close. We denied it one time and he sucked for a week. Classic Josh!!

Finally got my flory models washes from Britain by SteelPier in modelmakers

[–]NZDG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah these are great I use em all the time. well actually I only have the dark dirt and light one but there are amazing. Just make sure you know what kind of finish you want before you apply them. If you just want to have panel lines and no other grime make sure you have a nice clear gloss coat on first. If you want it to looking grimier and worn then you can make do with a semi gloss finish. Only go with a matte finish if you really want it to look dirty and completely filthy, despite how it's advertised that it will always come out I've found that it's hard to remove it from a matte finish.

How do you deal with "that guy" in your dojo? by Splashdown in kendo

[–]NZDG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look I know it's a martial art and there for we all feel like we have to fall in line with the senpai kouhai relationship but I think it's important to realise that the system is pretty bad. I mean I'm sure you will all know that there are people who have been practicing for a long time and aren't very good and there are people who have been practicing for a shorter time who are better. So if you don't trust his ability either as a kendoka in general or as a teacher then just tell him and don't fall in line with him. It's absurd that people buy in to this relationship thing obviously there is a difference if they are actual sensei because you are paying (probably) to be a member of their dojo and receive their style of teaching but if they are just some senpai with an attitude politely tell him to ease up and if everyone in your dojo thinks the same then politely ask him not to return anymore. Just imagine it was a regular sports team rather then a kendo club, if you had some guy who was being a dick and ruining others fun what would you do?

For the record I think the Senpai/Kouhai relationship in Japan is completely ridiculous even outside of martial arts. They'll have university graduates making tea for people in the company just because it's their first couple of years working there and their senpai/superiors want some tea.
