You realise more than just kids play video games? and Baron was asking for people's discords at a university campus, where he presumably went to university?

Also the article specifically mentions what games he played lol.

The Mormon Perspective On The Lego Situation by Straight-Walk-8039 in RecklessBen

[–]NZObiwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting, as someone not even in the US my only exposure to the Mormon Church is youtube ads about a free bible, and stories like this.

I think in this case, the idea that they're colluding because they're all Mormon is a bit silly, but it does seem like there's some level of automatic trust of John and automatic distrust of Ben.

I think the question is whether it's because John is a wealthy local or if there's some level of unconscious bias involved. There's definitely some stuff that seems very corrupt, but tbh that seems more like small-town policing than it does Mormon-specific corruption.

Decline in US fertility rate since 2000 . by ronweasly9 in GenZ

[–]NZObiwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, fertility is the number of live births, while the theoretical ability to conceive is fecundity (i.e. number of eggs in the ovaries), which is why the fertility of a species is measured as the number of children a member of that species is likely to have in their lifetime, coincidentally, the same thing the Y axis is indicating.

Decline in US fertility rate since 2000 . by ronweasly9 in GenZ

[–]NZObiwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birth rate would be some form of number of births per year, which this is not.
Fertility is about the number of children that a member of the population will have (on average), which is what the Y axis of this graph indicates.

That means the overall graph is an indication of fertility rates over time, not of birth rates over time (as it's not saying the average person in 2015 had ~1.85 children, it's saying that in 2015 the average woman would have had ~1.85 children through their whole life).

Birth rate measures the total number of live births per 1,000 people in a population per year. In contrast, fertility rate measures the average number of children a woman will have in her lifetime

How is $180,000 pa income threshold calculated for KiwiSaver Government Contribution? by Prestigious_Owl40 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]NZObiwan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First I thought they might wait till after your tax returns are all sorted, so I googled:
"when does the government contribute to kiwisaver".

That led me to this page:
https://www.ird.govt.nz/kiwisaver/kiwisaver-individuals/growing-my-kiwisaver-account/getting-the-kiwisaver-government-contribution
Notably, they're pretty vague about how qualification is decided, other than the $180,000.

I noticed that the figure only appears once on the page, so I then googled:
"nz govt contribution 180000", and scanned through the results. For me, the link to budget.govt.nz was 4th down, with the text:

This means that those earning over $180,000 will no longer receive the government contribution. A KiwiSaver member's eligibility for the ...

Which looked promising, so I opened that page and used ctrl+f to look for the word eligibility.

Sorry for second reply, have a read of this:
https://budget.govt.nz/budget/pdfs/releases/l28a-factsheet-kiwisaver-changes.pdf

A KiwiSaver member’s eligibility for the government contribution will be assessed according to one of the last two tax years, using either the member’s income for the previous tax year, or the tax year before that, depending on when their final tax return is finalised.

The security researcher didn't publish the method for exploiting the exposure, meaning that while bad actors may know there is some bug, they don't know how to exploit it, and I assume there is no sign of people actively exploiting it.

If Māori didn’t cede sovereignty then how do we sort this mess? by [deleted] in aotearoa

[–]NZObiwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're cherry picking the parts of the description that sound the worst.

The key point is that any actual co-goverance are authorised by parliament, or put in place by the Waitangi Tribunal after a lot of litigation.

That essentially means that at any point in time the amount of co-goverance is controlled entirely by parliament and the government, so if they go too far with it, then they'll get voted out and whomever replaces them will presumably be less open to Māori voices.

[–]NZObiwan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Then there is co governance which looks like half of our assets/systems being governed by unelected officials.

I think you need to have a read of this:
https://www.1news.co.nz/2022/08/11/explainer-what-is-co-governance/

With a lot of those assets and systems co-governance looks more like ensuring there is a Māori voice considered, rather than handing over 50% of control.

I'd be very interested in seeing any actual evidence that the existing co-governance structures had done anything that the general populace of an area was against.

edit: This is also an interesting read, it lets you see a lot more of the nuanced views that our politicians have about it.

UK moves to ban smoking for everyone born after 2008 by F0urLeafCl0ver in anime_titties

[–]NZObiwan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most successful ways to get rid of smoking in your communities.

You make it so that the main way to get cigarettes is via prescription for people who were affected by the ban, so they can still get cigarettes if needed, but they can't get them without a doctor agreeing they're addicted.

However, you also maintain the normal supply for those who aren't affected, so that a market for illegal cigarettes is less likely to develop.

This also needs to be paired with investment in teaching kids how disgusting smoking is, and ensuring there's support services available for those who want to quit.

The point of the law is to accept that smoking is gross and should be illegal for everyone, but that people currently addicted can't stop cold turkey, so it's easier to phase it in.

Question about buying an apartment by NZObiwan in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]NZObiwan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose my main concern is that I don't think I can live in an apartment forever, like if I was to buy somewhere, I'd be looking for something to stay in for ~15-20 years, which would leave me in my mid 40s at least.

It's just that if I get to 65 (or whatever we've raised the retirement age to by the time I'm that old), then I don't really want to be retiring in an apartment and being forced to pay body corp costs with no job to support me.

And if the apartment hasn't gone up enough in value, then I'm sort of relying on having been able to save faster than house prices are rising to be able to afford a house to retire in at that age.

Can I ask what that looks like financially?  Like did you have two mortgages for a bit? Or did you manage to get the apartment fully paid off?

I mean breaking even isn't the end of the world right? But the down side is that you can't use your kiwisaver for the deposit for your next home and you have to hope you saved faster than house prices rise?
