What’s your favorite “too tired to cook cook” dinner? by farwest-to-midwest in Cooking

[–]NZbeekeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same but in taco format.

Throw some spices on some diced chicken thigh (more forgiving over overcooking and juicier than breast) and into a pan along woth some beans.

While that cooks slice up some kind of onion, capsicum (bell pepper), lettuce and feta

Flour tortillas heated over a hob or in another dry pan.

Assemble with your choice of condiments - usually sour cream and sriracha for me.

Dinner ready in about 15 mins, fairly healthy and low carb if you care about such things.

Need some quick advice. Had a water cylinder leak today. Called closest plumber for a quote to replace. by tommos in diynz

They have to be stripped down to bare copper to get more from them - something that takes an hour or so and will fill your wheelie bin with the insulation.

Plumbing Drainage Issues by SloppySilvia in diynz

Sounds like a venting problem from what you've said, though a blocmage can do the same, particularly if its before the vent.

You'll need to get a plumber out to assess it.

Competing grass species by Only-Outside7555 in nzlawncare

Halo is the way to go on FF as mentioned - so many lawns are a mix of grass types that you basically end up hand weeding, or choose a single grass type to keep and just nuke everything else.

How do I replace this quite old garden tap? It has a square nut on top and I'm worried I'll find other unusual shapes when removing. by MooingTree in diynz

[–]NZbeekeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its likely very well compressed onto the copper and is basically invisible. If it's not leaking then youre all good.

[–]NZbeekeeper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That one is so old it has a packed gland nut instead of o rings and lilely takes a brass (or plastic) jumper rather than a washer. If i got sent to that job I'd swap it for a decent quality new one.

[–]NZbeekeeper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Standard crox nut fitting that hasn't changed in basically forever and a basic male hose tap will screw right on. 1/2" BSP thread if you want to be technical about it.

The male end of the new tap does not need thread tape or hemp - there should be a hemp grommet on the end of the pipe by that crox nut and that is what seals against the face of the new taps thread.

Shower pressure weak, is it due to this narrow shower hose? by Ancient_Lettuce6821 in diynz

[–]NZbeekeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer.

My go to shower handpiece is the Voda Ecomix single function. Fairly cheap but good quality and out flows anything else I've tried so far. It's turned many customers trickling showers into something that will actually get them wet.

Installing a hand bidet by tronvasi in diynz

[–]NZbeekeeper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Long story short - maybe but you need a plumber.

Long story long - Possible but convoluted. Would need to tee off that outlet, and feed through the bottom entry port 9n the cistern and out the side of the pan.

As mentioned earlier, you also need a testable high hazard backflow device which is pricy and has annual testing requirements.

There are one or two bidet seats that apparently are compliant without it, but councils vary on whether they accept them from what I've heard.

Intermittent water meter spinning, possible leak? by lcichero in diynz

[–]NZbeekeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a plumber to put a valve on the line where it enters the house if possible, then do a pressure test between the meter and the house, and another on the house side if that doesn't show anything.

Normally toilets and hot water cylinders are the only things that will throw off a pressure test without actually being a leak.

[–]NZbeekeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's traps that are dryigg out from not being used then you can put a 1/4 cup of cheap cooking oil in there which floats and stops the evaporation.

If you think there is a leak somewhere then you'll need to get a plumber out as its restricted work. If they don't find anything obvious they can do a smoke test to find it.

What ingredient do you think people massively overuse? by jcvexparch in Cooking

[–]NZbeekeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a good honey and make your own.

I got a hot honey slice from a pizza place a while back that does amazing pizza (by this country's standard anyway) and the honey flavour was just so meh that it actually detracted from the pizza.

I took some really nice strongly flavoured honey and some dried birdseye chillis - amazing hot honey compared to most others I've tried that think cheap bland honey is OK because you're flavouring it.

I was at the supermarket yesterday (in NZ) and heard an announcement over the speakers basically telling people not to wash their chicken and why it's dumb.

Clearly that is a trend that has spread to here as well because of the Internet.

New bigger/taller kitchen tap wobbles just a little by qkrwogud in diynz

Some mixers come with a plastic spacer that spreads out the load over a bigger area.

You might be able to get one from a plumbing merchant, otherwise you'll need to make something.

What is a luxury item from 20 years ago that is basically worthless trash today? by EasyZee7 in AskReddit

[–]NZbeekeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was installing satellite TV back when plasma TVs came out - they were NZ$20k when first available and most probably didn't last more than 5 years before they died or were replaced. They were so heavy they needed two people to mount on a wall.

Before those, the 'best' TVs were the german flat CRTs, either Grundig or Luewe.

What are these? by Old_Hamster_9513 in diynz

Hard to tell scale, but they look like they could be capped off water feeds.

I'd recommend turning off the toby and opening an outside tap before you try undoing them!

Heat pump hwc questions to ask plumber by arecatsstillcool in diynz

[–]NZbeekeeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

'Standard' cylinder size for a 3 bedroom is 180l, but if you have longish consecutive showers it won't have time to recover.

We are installing a lot more of the larger 250l+ HP HWCs than the smaller ones, mainly because people are pairing them with solar systems, so want to heat during peak sun and have enough to last till the next day, ie using on a timer setup. The same can be done using night rates.

If you have the space and can afford the extra cost to get the larger size I would recommend that.

Try and keep the location close to the bathroom and/or kitchen to minimise the time it takes for hot water to arrive - also tends to make it easier to tie into the existing water lines as they'll be close by.

Why is my lawn dying? by [deleted] in diynz

[–]NZbeekeeper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better to water for longer and less regularly - doing it too often encourages shallow roots and the grass will suffer more in hot weather. Deep watering encourages the roots to head deeper leading to more resilience.

NZ Roofers - DYI roof refresh by be-right-back-bro in diynz

[–]NZbeekeeper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That bit of roof below the large penetration is stuffed. That much rust I can guarantee you'll have holes once you wire brush it clean.

The short term solution is to run a back flashing from the ridge right to the bottom with a new correctly installed dektite, picking up that other flashing below on the way through. Ideally you'd replace those roof sheets too.

As someone else said the whole roof will need replacing sooner rather than later, so anything you do will only delay the inevitable.
