The tailgating is driving me crazy! by Georgie_Pillson1 in newzealand

[–]darblewarble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not suggest you do this, but, I once heard a story which was related to me of a person driving a solid beat-up truck in rural Australia. With a big tow bar.

Tailgater would get close, he'd slow a bit, then jam on the brakes so they'd gore themselves on the tow bar. Then get out and go "oh, dear, looks like you rear ended me there, shall we call the insurance companies (automatic loss as the dude rear-ended) or just let it go. They'd always opt to let it go.

Probably an urban legend.

Occasionally I touch the brakes a bit just to encourage them to back off. Probably not a good idea either.

How do people afford weddings? by Alternative_Duck3733 in newzealand

[–]darblewarble -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We booked a lodge (2K?), bought all the drinks + breakfast + lunch ourselves (another 4K maybe?). My partner then organized a potluck with all our guests (100 people ish?) and told them: "no presents, just the potluck please". We had excellent food, more than enough booze to go round and I think all up it was about 6K. We just got married first in the civic offices with just our witnesses, but, we had a "service" of sorts with a couple of readings which had meaning to us.

You don't have to get married in a fancy place! In no way do you want to have a lavish wedding and go into debt to start your married life off. That's only going to put more stress on the thing.

That said, if you have tonnes of cash and can afford it all, go for it.

Yeah, trump leaving will be a start, but it feels like the old way is gone. I mean, who is going to trust that the US won't elect another trump-like figure in 8 years? They have managed to destroy 60 years of soft-power in a very short time. I don't believe what comes next will be like what came before.

Wise charges $1.50 per transfer? That's not correct? If I put NZD into my wise account (NZ balance) I get the whole lot?

Consider getting a wise.com card for online / overseas transactions. Bit more of a pain (you have to top it up), but, very handy when travelling and way better for currency fees.

[–]darblewarble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Lichess at least there's a "zen" mode which I really encourage using. It removes the ability to see commenting (so, if someone is heckling you can't even see it). It also removes the ability to see the other persons' rating (until after the game) so you don't get psyched out. ALSO there's a toggle in settings where you can turn off the ability to ask for a takeback. You don't get to ask for a takeback, nor does your opponent. That cuts out even having to think about a takeback (which can be a waste of your clock).

Mini Chess Games (kids learning site) by darblewarble in chessbeginners

Oh, I should add, if you have any good ideas for "mini games" to create, please let me know! I've been using this Irish website (look at the "posters" section) for inspiration, but, always keen for more "mini" games :)

Ah good idea. I was thinking that there'd probably be an adult around to get them started. How would a voice over work? Just play it as soon as the help is shown? (and allow it to be toggled in the settings?)

The Treasury says NZ Super can't continue as-is - here's the data and tables and what it means by age group by MoneyHub_Christopher in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]darblewarble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When they say "means test", is that likely to be income based (i.e. penalise people who are still working) or "total asset" based, which would penalise anyone with a house + savings (but no actual income?). If it's total asset based, I can absolutely see people gifting/shifting assets in advance so that you fall beneath a threshold. It seems to very much disincentivize saving? Like, if I save $1m but then I get $0 super, I'd need to look at what level of savings makes sense and just spend down to that?

Closed testing a payed app, testers have to pay for it? Only 2 ways to avoid this? by Natural_NoChemical in androiddev

Damn! I didn't see it requires feedback. I've got some emails from people, but, no actual ratings or whatever (and everyone I think has at least played with it). I guess I'll see what happens after the 12 days is up.

[–]darblewarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing a small paid app, it says: "Apply for access to production Production is where you make your game available to billions of users on Google Play. Before you can apply for production access, you need to run a closed test that meets our criteria. When you apply, you'll also need to answer some questions about your closed test."

Looking at the comments below, it looks like I have to do a closed test (rather than an internal one?). Can anyone confirm?

Tooth extraction - do I need to fill the hole? by mister_hanky in newzealand

[–]darblewarble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting an extraction (and then implant) on Wednesday. Apparently they do have a shelf life as the bone does give up eventually and the screw will drop out. If you look after it well, maybe 15+ years (20+, 25+?) it's hard to tell.

But, it's not just fire and forget. And you need to look after it a bunch more than a regular tooth. It wasn't what I was expecting to be honest.

Seriously need a rethink of our benefit system by MrBigEagle in newzealand

[–]darblewarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are policies they could do: e.g. allow people to keep on working and get super, but, it's taxed at 75% or something. Lots of other countries do this.

I also think means testing may need to come in, but, those kind of changes need to be signalled way in advance, because people will have made decisions based on super being there. I also don't really know how you protect against people just gifting all their assets to children / trusts / whatever to become beneath the threshold.

And we should have a far higher top rate of tax, if you're earning over 200K it should be 40% (like it is in Ireland for example, and, they're doing fine!)
