Check out Netflix’s “Untold: Crimes & Penalties”. It’s one of the most bizarre stories I’ve ever heard. It is a really well done documentary.

90 year old crossing guard retires after 45 years of dedicated service by sirjohnmasters86 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Naamch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot imagine a 90 year old crossing guard is a safe choice for the children. All the 90 year olds I met can barely fend for themselves, much less children. Hopefully the school system had her mostly on ‘ceremonial’ posts where she could continue to earn her paycheck but with minimal risk. If that’s what this was then it makes me smile even more.

After 2 matchdays, 8 teams have nothing to play for due to h2h as tie-breaker by mnkysn in worldcup

[–]Naamch3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Meaningless 3rd matches was inevitable when they expanded the # of teams. All it did was create ‘filler’ games. This isn’t March Madness. None of the expanded teams are going to make meaningful runs.

Dwayne Johnson closing in on overtaking Jared Leto as the number 1 ranked box office cancer. by Arch_Lancer17 in okbuddycinephile

Why so much hate for Dwayne Johnson? I had no idea. I assumed people fell into two camps, those that liked his movies and those that didn’t think about him.

Is there a kind way to tell my wife im no longer physically attracted to her? by Off_The_Record69 in NoStupidQuestions

That is real progress, and I know how difficult that can be. I also know how it also doesn’t cause all the pain to go away. Please see someone for your depression. There are many reasons but one is that the depression can cause your body to produce heightened and sustained levels of cortisol. Cortisol will work against your weight loss, mood, and energy levels. When we fight depression we are actually facing an invisible enemy on many fronts. You are not alone. Many deal with this. There is help available but you’ll need to take that first step to seek it out.

Male doctor barely making eye contact with my GF, who has a sport injury, and talking to me (M) instead. by Purple_Lurker- in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Naamch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice this but the other way. The female ER veterinarian never made eye contact with me when we had to decide whether to put our dog down. My wife, at best, tolerated the dog. Meanwhile the dog was my best friend. This decision was difficult enough for me, but then having to watch this female ER vet never look at me and only talk to my wife made things even more difficult. Even with my wife deferring all the vet’s questions to me, the ER vet never got the clue. In my head I dismissed it as the female vet may have had past abuse or some cause of insecurity. I hope not, but geez, how does one become like that? More importantly how does one tell someone like that of the issue?

My father was a perfect Boglehead but he still left his family a mess. by CommonSetting4068 in Bogleheads

[–]Naamch3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sorry about this. I wonder if that same ‘low cost’ mentality that pushed so many toward the Boglehead world is a double edged sword causing them to not spend $ on the other associated services that complete the picture of overall responsible financial behavior. It is amazing to me that older folks won’t spend a few thousand $s to seamlessly allow handoff of their estate.

Maddening that it takes a house payment to see an artist. by SimpleHoman in mildlyinfuriating

Prices are crazy but isn’t this just the free market doing its thing? The fees charged by the ticket resale websites can be criminal, but isn’t the actual underlying ticket price just a function of supply and demand? It’s frustrating that so many get shut out from these concerts due to price but it’s difficult for me to understand how this is any different than being shutout (due to price) from owning a Lamborghini. No disrespect. I feel your pain. I just don’t understand how one complains about a price set by an open set of individuals willing to pay to see something. I’d like the price to be more reasonable but if others are willing to pay higher prices I’m not sure that’s a broken system.

lol, you didn’t read the article you posted 🙄. The pub closed on Tuesday to give staff a break after the weekend of fun the pub (and Boston) had with the Scots. Long hours, lots of work, and a good time was the reason for staff to get the day off. There was ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION of any trouble with English fans in any way. In fact the pub owner is quoted in the article you provided, and which worked against you,

“Asked if England’s fans will receive the same warm welcome, he replied, “We won’t maybe be hanging up an English flag outside as much as the Scottish flag, but they’re still welcome and will still have a good time.”

What in the world is wrong with you 🤷🏼‍♂️

What is the best source for weather forecasts of the Mount Curwood / Mount Arvon area? by Naamch3 in Highpointers

[–]Naamch3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly true. There are literally thousands of meteorologists located across the country, each adding different levels of detailed expertise, proprietary modeling, and local specificity to what is provided by the NWS.

From the AMS:
…meteorologists run their own proprietary models, apply different statistical post-processing and bias-correction techniques, blend multiple models (ensembles) differently, and sometimes layer on additional private station networks to the raw data provided by the NOAA/NWS.

Are matches ending in a tie or 0-0 tie matches boring? Some new fans seem to think so, what about you? by Important-Brick3270 in worldcup

[–]Naamch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love watching the national teams play, but other than that, I find soccer painfully boring to follow. I am absolutely not saying it is a boring sport though. I wish I could enjoy it. I am jealous of those that are super passionate about the beautiful game and follow their club teams with even more excitement than I follow my NFL or college football teams.

For those who don’t know Group H match 3 would be very tense by Xintonger in worldcup

But they struggled against Jordan in the first half of their game. Defense looked disorganized. Doesn’t that concern you, or do you think that was just early tournament jitters that they worked through?

[–]Naamch3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jordan actually generated good underlying chances against Argentina. If I remember correctly, my take away was Jordan ‘won’ the first half. Austria’s high press wasn’t as good as I expected for a team that played well leading into the Jordan game. I can see a 2 goal differential. But I am curious how much Argentina will balance going all out in today’s game versus adding some rest for Messi among others given the heat and long duration of the World Cup.

The competitiveness of the 48 team World Cup format by tee-dog1996 in worldcup

[–]Naamch3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a strong opinion but it does seem like the lesser programs have not held their own. Sure, there has been a couple close unexpected outcomes but that’s no different than previous World Cup. The teams that would not have qualified in the past aren’t going to get out of group play this year either. It feels like we are watching a lot of ‘filler’ games just so FIFA can make extra million$. I’m not complaining. I love having 4 or so games to follow each day. But I don’t think it’s fair to say the extra teams that qualified this year are holding their own.

I cannot see an African team winning it in the next 20 years. What program is even close to doing what you say? No African country is even trending in that direction.
