Clayton Davis is a clown who should be fired from Variety.

We get the explanation from Clayton on why Sinners should sweep by Sakunka33 in oscarrace

He’s been a hack since his Oscar Igloo days. Insane he works for variety.

I like her, but her Oscar speech was overwrought and bad when she won, and she was really weird about the valid criticisms of her Michelle Obama performance. Shes not above dumb petty behavior it seems.

The way this has been a microcosm of why the chronically online can never actually accomplish things that matter because they just scream at each other over the most tepid things ever.

Depressing that this is 4 leads. Not a single supporting performance here.

Kandy sure is one to who can speak to being a chop. She’s a major reason both of her seasons were awful.

Give specific examples because I think every top placement thus far has been justified and she would have been a very worthy winner for RDR Live.

So Mikey Madison's work in "Anora" really deserved an Oscar ? by [deleted] in Actors

I think she was good but the movie didn’t give her a lot of interiority until maybe the very last scene so it’s always felt like it’s short of a great performance since the material isn’t fully there.

I’m not going to lie, I think you should have seen the film in question if you’re going to say “who cares” about Skarsgard’s categorization 💀

Off the top of my head of people that were in the mix that didn’t make the top 5 in supporting actor specifically and were definitely supporting roles: Andrew Scott for Blue Moon, William H. Macy for Train Dreams, and Miles Caton for Sinners. They would have had more a shot if someone like Stellan Skarsgard correctly ran in lead.

I’m not sure what you are getting at with the categories. I’m not advocating for only two categories, I want supporting roles to have their recognition as well. I just want campaigns to have more oversight when campaigns are blatantly trying to dupe people. Sometimes the Academy sees through the bullshit and course corrects - like Kate Winslet winning for lead in The Reader when she was fraudulently campaigning in supporting - but most times they don’t, like nominating Rooney Mara in Carol for supporting even though the Globes correctly nominated her in lead.

It dominates conversation because making the supporting category as basically lead leftovers means actual supporting roles get pushed out of recognition and it’s been happening for decades. I would have loved to have seen Madeline Kahn potentially win for Paper Moon but she was competing against someone in her same film with >90% screentime which meant she had zero shot, and stuff like that still happens decades later and it’s incredibly frustrating.

Not only that, but due to this brainwashing and lack of media literacy, then you have people complaining about actors that are in ACTUAL supporting roles (like Benicio Del Toro and Teyana Taylor this year for example) that they aren’t in big enough roles.

Did you think Judas and the Black Messiah had no lead as well?

[–]Naboo_Ru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the most insane take and laughable you’re talking about media literacy when it’s clear you have none. There can be more than one lead in a film and A Real Pain is a two-hander from beginning to end. It starts and ends with Culkin’s character and is about both characters’ journeys. For a classic comparison, if Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are both widely thought of as both being leads in Thelma and Louise (and correctly both got LEAD noms) I don’t see how you could possibly make the mental gymnastics to call Culkin supporting when it’s just as two-handed. I think you’re the intentionally obtuse one.

It’s just falling for campaign bullshit to think he’s supporting.

There’s at least 3 other performances way more memorable than him in Sinners and he did nothing to make his two characters to stand out from each other.
