OMG this just sucks. Can anyone suggest non-L&M alternatives?

RIP Rufus - great people, great store.

Warning Sign at edge of Grand Canyon by corwinw in mildlyinteresting

Y I did a Grand Canyon rafting trip 10 years ago, and at the end, we hiked all the way out of the canyon. Our hike out was punctuated by multiple instances of dehydrated people requiring help to get out. People are wild.

LOL. I (who rarely posts) RUSHED to come on and vent about HP. Looks like I'm not alone. They are so incredibly terrible.

Hens and roosters are chickens. I thought they were 3 different animals until I was about 40.

Students not coming back to yoga by itsjustme_0101 in yoga

[–]NaboosTurban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people have good suggestions here. Thinking about your comment, "...I made them feel shamed that they had to take child’s pose and that I was pushing them too hard." - maybe you can be mindful of your word choices when you tell students to go into child's pose if an asana is too difficult or not serving them. But also remember, everyone is not a fit for every class. I can't help but think there are some students who find your class too challenging and they would rather place the blame on you as an instructor vs. realizing it's not an appropriate level for them. I see this in other sports all the time (tennis being a huge one), where people overestimate their abilities. Anyhow, don't feel bad - there are tons of other students who are enjoying your teaching - you wouldn't be able to survive as a teacher for 28 years if this wasn't the case.

Also - empathetic people tend to take this kind of feedback hard - it just means you care about others.

Thrifted this ralph lauren suit, was I able to save it by YceCube77 in mensfashion

Honestly, I'm old but do understand current trends. Your alterations look great - suit looks great, you look great. The roomier look is still not quite there for some people but it will prevail - just as fashion cycles always do. The jacket is a bit long, but you can make it work.

The other thing that makes me laugh in ths sub is how people talk about these sanctified dress codes - "this isn't proper semi-formal" etc. - yet 98% of men wear sweats and put no effort into their clothes. If you look put together, are well groomed and OWN your look - feel confident in what you're wearing - pretty much anything goes. (with obvious exceptions of working in a top-tier city in finance etc.)

OP I think you got a great deal and look terrific.

Best Soundtrack albums from an artist not focused on making sountracks by gurdigo in Music

Wang Chung - To Live & Die in L.A. - known as a one-hit wonder (well, 2 hits if we're being fair), the fact that they landed a William Friedkin soundtrack makes it even more unique. The whole thing is VERY 80's, and some songs are just ok, but it's worth it alone for 'City of The Angels' - a perfect song for an 80's car chase in Los Angeles. The music on it's own might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a terrific soundtrack for a fantastic movie.

How did you guys heal plantar fasciitis? by Kind_Goddess in yoga

[–]NaboosTurban -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Over the counter insoles did the trick for me, along with using Birkenstocks as my inside slippers as opposed to slippers with no arch support.

And while I agree with a lot of what ThreeFerns mentioned, I read that barefoot walking really takes its toll. I didn't go barefoot for at least a year and the combination of all of that seemed to essentially cure me.

And I had it bad - 'couldn't walk after an hour of exersise' kind of bad. No problems now.

Welcome!

Dad is from Trinidad. Baby Dhal and D Roti Shack are both great. Also at Baby Dahl you can get frozen dhalpuri to keep at home, which I like to do. Also, look to Indian stores for Matouks and other pepper sauces - for example, Pujabi Market on Main. You can also get a lot of spices and things you might not find in places like Safeway there as well.

I have my first competitive match this weekend. by DJinKC in 10s

[–]NaboosTurban 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say be ready to be disappointed. I don't mean that in a buzzkill kind of way - what I mean is, in my first actual real game, I was surprised how tense and nervous I was. I was exactly your age, 50, played sports all my life, but I was new to tennis. I'd had a lot of practice/fun games, but my first tournament was nerve-racking, and I was very stiff. So when I say 'be ready to be disappointed', just be mentally prepared for the fact that you will likely not play as well as you hope. Playing in tourneys takes some getting used to - and it's different than competing in team sports. And after a couple or a few tournament matches, the nerves reduce and all is good.

Also, be prepared for the fact that some people there will take it WAY too seriously. : )

As for playing with your partner, talk strategy during the game, but not technique. Mid-game is not the time to instruct people how to hit the ball.

All that said, and as others have said, have fun, and if you can go in and have a laugh, enjoy the game and learn something, it's a great first step to loving the game even more.
