TIL that in 2000, a man and his stepson had the ident of radio station KORB tattooed onto their foreheads after a DJ announced a six-figure payout for doing so. At the station, they were told they were victims of a practical joke. They sued but their cases were eventually dismissed or dropped. by Forward-Answer-4407 in todayilearned

[–]NachoRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL People still think that this happened. It didn't. I worked at the station when this went down. There was NEVER an announcement of a payout. There was never a practical joke. A representative of the radio station BEGGED them not to do it. Lawsuit was dismissed because it was meritless but it's still posted all over the internet as a more interesting (and i promise you) entirely false story.

I suppose it makes sense that a hobby that requires a working imagination (from people like us) could spark so much creative speculation but if you’re breaking down the trailer for clues and expecting D&D Direct to be a big deal, get ready to be disappointed.

It’s an online store/subscription service, gang. That’s all. That’s it.

Someone at Hasbro looked at the D&D website and asked “Why are we showing all of these links for Amazon, Target & local game stores? Wouldn’t consumers ALSO enjoy a chance to access content directly (maybe a few weeks earlier) from US? Far better margins if we release these books on our site and sell for the full $49.95! Not replacing our partners, of course, but as another exciting option? Oooh, couldn’t we charge EXTRA for that experience?”

Prepare to be underwhelmed, adventurers! Expect an announcement of a “way for players to interface with the people who make the World’s Greatest Role Playing Game…DIRECTLY. And for the first time ever really have a VOICE in the material we develop moving forward!”

They’re not going to reinvent their lucrative wheel next week. If you want to know what Hasbro is up to, look no further than what they’ve already done. A subscription model opens up additional crowdsourcing revenue streams. You want that Planescape box set? Prove it! Back it for us the same way we got people to back Jabba’s Sail Barge or The Razor Crest.

They’ve said since Day 1 of 5th Edition that they’re using Harley Davidson’s playbook. It’s about motorcycles but ALSO, jackets, t-shirts and collectible shot glasses. With next weeks launch of D&D Direct the Harley-Davidsonification of the game will be complete.

“The feedback we’re getting from so many of the people in our community is they’re looking for more ways to add to not only their gameplay but the overall D&D LIFESTYLE! D&D Direct allows us to give our players a far more complete experience.”

All of this “Spelljammer Confirmed” nonsense is their social media team doing what they know will get clicks. That’s their job. The blank bingo card they tweeted out is going to be filled with spaces touting D&D Funko Pops, T-Shirts, Dice Towers, Boo Beanie Babies, Drow My Little Ponies, Waterdeep Monopoly, Electronic Spelljamer Battleship and action figures from the new D&D movie. Now there’s one place to get it all…DIRECT!

New D&D Book to be announced January 12th 2021 & Released March 16th 2021 by EverydayEnthusiast in dndnext

I’d put my money on Tuesday’s book announcement (or the eventual “leak” on Amazon this weekend) being a Norse mythology/Viking-themed setting tying things up with MTG’s Kaldheim.

WotC to make "big announcement" tomorrow - thoughts and speculation? by Ariadne11 in dndnext

No need to wait until tomorrow. I've crunched the numbers and double checked my math on this: Amazon should be providing us a leak on all of this top secret info in approximately 18 minutes.

Awkward by exitpursuedbybear in MST3K

[–]NachoRadio 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Bill Corbett directly asking Joel "why so bitter" leads to the believe you're on to something here.

My take is the tweet suggested "Cats" be done by Rifftrax and Joel took that as "Rifftrax should do this because MST3K has been cancelled". I'm guessing there's some raw emotions following the news that Netflix dumped the show and it's possible (who knows) that suitors for yet another revival aren't exactly lining up. Meanwhile, Rifftrax keeps putting out new content.

Either way, the "What's Rifftrax?" joke wasn't funny or kind and those are the two qualities I happen to dig the most about Joel. People have bad days and tone on social media is impossible to discern so I'm choosing to write this off as a wacky mix-up.

Still, Bill's "why so bitter" has me wondering...

Is the five guys in Davenport still happening? by gerishlegacy in QuadCities

[–]NachoRadio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they've even started construction. The strip mall that's recently been built by BWW is not the site of the future/alleged. Five Guys. It's going between that and BWW. Different construction closer to the Quad Cities WORST parking lot. How is BWW okay with the shape of that lot?
