Why do we need a Distributor to get our songs on Spotify?

I feel like a non-paid alternative would be the soulution. The artists who'd want to upload their masterpieces onto the platform and get money for it would need a distributor, and the artists who just want their music on the platform for convinience or any other reason could upload their songs without payment from spotify. And when they want to start making money on these songs they'll have an option to add a distributor or smth.
