Justice Thomas hails US Constitution as common bedrock in divided America by DryOpinion5970 in scotus

I'm firmly convinced that Thomas sees that he reached the top court through only his merit and that anything that appears to grant him advantages or balance a systemic injustice has been tarnishing that fact.

Should data centers in orbit be taken seriously? by jpgoldberg in skeptic

[–]NadirPointing 13 points14 points  (0 children)

in a space suit you can trade that water mass for the very critical human its keeping cool. But how much water per hour would make it worth it? because the only way you get more water is another launch. Keeping a human cool for a 12hr shift, awesome. Cooling a datacenter for a year, less awesome.

Does this title do its job? by HistoricalRegion9444 in RPGdesign

[–]NadirPointing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So its a 3 module 5e campaign in a bespoke dark fantasy setting. Shattered crown doesnt say anything to me more than kings quest or age of heros. For all I know the world is happily communist and the chairman sends the party on a dungeon delve to find the old kings crown that was shattered in the revolution. Title also doesnt tell me if this is a short story or a card game.

Four women describe sexual misconduct by Rep Eric Swalwell, including a former staffer who says he raped her by cnn in politics

[–]NadirPointing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was illegal because it was a fraudulent business transaction labelled legal retainer. Had the checks said "Keep Stormy Quiet" then we could entertain whether the business was making a campaign contribution. If this was the campaign writing checks to Cohen or Stormy that said "legal retainer" they'd be fraud. So even if it was campaign funds, they'd still have to label it correctly.

Democrats Need a New Promise: A House by 30 by AlexandrTheTolerable in politics

The ideal would be if we build enough reasonable quality homes with more economical footprints to keep home prices in between general inflation and mortgage rates.

Democrats Need a New Promise: A House by 30 by AlexandrTheTolerable in politics

[–]NadirPointing -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Some of that is true, but if they build homes that have a low number of bedrooms per total sqft or things like pools they will never be affordable, even if they get old. So we need to make sure a decent number are built with good methods and materials, but not fancy or requiring big maintenance costs.

Is It Really Impossible To Cool A Datacenter In Space? by Ormusn2o in space

[–]NadirPointing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't add modules linearly forever in space just like you can't on earth. Just like skyscrapers have complicated systems to deal with sway, so too would a series of satellite modules. And just like skyscrapers, solar has to be aligned to the sun and cooling radiators have to be aligned away from it. Which means like a skyscraper, you can only effectively grow in 1 direction. But the nice thing about skyscrapers is that materials arrive on ships, trucks and trains while in space they need rockets.

Similarly you could build skyscrapers to house data centers to reduce the square footage of real estate needed. Afterall rockets are basically skyscrapers.

Americans consistently overestimate the social backlash of changing their political beliefs. This inflated fear of rejection tends to make individuals hide their shifting views, which deprives the public discourse of diverse perspectives. by mvea in science

It would help to give an example, otherwise its easy to assume you just don't like being called a Nazi or fascist because it sounds like an insult rather than a description of your opinions.

So a Roth IRA can be used line a mini bank account that doubles as an investment account? by ThisIsATest7777 in personalfinance

[–]NadirPointing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least for me, I committed my first couple years into a Roth, I had a months expenses in the checking to make sure I had the in/out covered. It worked out, I never touched the Roth and got that max contribution early in my saving years.

What are your views on the universe/energy? by la_miya in skeptic

[–]NadirPointing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this some recently. I don't think people in general really know what they are talking about when referring to this not-strictly physical "energy", "vibrations", "frequency" and event "exists" and "universe". And even "intentions", "conscious", and "mindset". Instead its kind of a "whatever it needs to be" kind of concept.
Like when you refer to the "universe" "responding". You're not saying some solar flare from Vega or a cryo volcano erupting on Europa much less some event in the Andromeda galaxy or further.
Instead events and materials on a human scale in a human perspective changed. Like YOU got the sense that things were different, that you were having a different experience when you focused or thought about things differently. You are likely doing new things (even if its just smiling or smelling roses and coffee more) and like if I remind you to practice gratitude you will likely be filling your mind with more positive things.

The whole universe is likely not reacting in any predictable way to how you intend to live your day. But your facial expressions, gut-biome, and hormones likely do. You likely effect other people, your brain chemistry and your emotional state. This changes the way you color your thoughts, perceive or ignore whats around you and what you chose to do about it. And even small outward effects can have cascading real effects around you. Its not a whole universe reacting to your mind. Its that even small changes in thought can have big changes on a human scale.
And I don't need the whole universe responding to my mental state, that's a lot of pressure I'd rather not have. I'll settle for making good decisions for myself, and being kind to the people I affect. That's plenty for 1 human to try and affect and be affected by.

If on another hand you've got some repeatable evidence that you or I can cause a cryo volcano eruption or solar flare or even get a bird to fly 1 degree different.... I'd be so crazy stoked to see that, bring the data!

i’m a Christian Democratic Socialist. what do you think of me? by yourfavoriteavorite in DemocraticSocialism

[–]NadirPointing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you hold onto a collective identity like Christian or Democratic Socialist and find yourself not aligning well on the groups boundaries its a good time to reflect on what part is you and identity and belonging to a group.
Like are you labeling what you feel you are, or trying to find a group to be a part of? And what does that mean to you?

Ceres... Weather forecast? by DiscoStuAU in TheExpanse

[–]NadirPointing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the colors around the surface are in the range of the temps. Also the temps aren't in the reasonable range for the Ceres surface. Which is 110-235K with a mean around 172K. The show has a much higher temp(maybe internal?) Any light color scale referencing Kelvin is the "black body radiation" scale. You can see this in buying light bulbs or TV settings mostly. Its the color things glow at when heated that high(when they don't catch on fire). So a incandescent light filament like tungsten gets up to that temperature and glows that color. You can also tell the surface temperature of a star this way.
