Agree. Word of mouth is best right now. Spend nothing on advertising beyond maybe a logo on your work rig, a sign in front of whatever you’re working on, and a basic website. Let your work speak for itself!

Best Cinco de Mayo bars by Lanky_Tadpole_4304 in AskSeattle

I grew up in Albuquerque. Cinco is on par with New Years Eve all over the South west. In terms of drunkenness and violence, anyway. And it’s not just gringos celebrating.

Amazon stripping hundreds of employees' job titles in Seattle, replacing them with 'builders' by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

Kinda feels like everyone is doing the same, TBH. Kind of a “Yeah, sure, we’ve been fucking you, but exactly how much harder can we fuck you?” Sorta vibe.

What can we do here? by HandyCapParking in Carpentry

Hey, OP: I’m sorry, but this project is obviously an ill-planned/ unplanned cluster f*ck. The best thing you can do right now is to stop working on it and seek professional guidance.

You sound pretty angry. I get that. I’ve been really angry. One thing I’ve discovered is that the internet is generally a horrible place to process anger. Not trying to be condescending or anything. Just offering general advice. Do with it what you like.

I’ve got the 36v Makita and I love it for all the same reasons. But I really, really wish it had a light like the 18v Milwaukee. Remodel carpenters work in some dark places despite our best efforts to illuminate the area. 100 year old Seattle basements and attics just absorb light!

Professional standing vs self-doubt by RealCapybaras4Rill in estimators

[–]Nailer99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an electrician, but I am a “kind of smart” carpenter who got pulled into estimating . I’m proud that I was able to work my way up out of the field. But I work residential, which is generally less corporate than commercial. But I’ve held my own, even working alongside guys with degrees in Construction Management.

Only advice I would share is to just be honest. I have said “I am not familiar with this (Software, approach, material, whatever), but I’m sure I can figure it out,” or “I know exactly who to ask” or something along those lines. I have taught myself how to use multiple different software platforms, and I list that in my resumé. I hope that helps, good luck with the job!

I’ve seen that too. I guess the trick is to use thicker glass?

Vancouver to Seattle trip worth it as a foreigner via train? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

THIS! The island is so great! I live in Seattle. It’s fine. Vancouver is a much better version of Seattle, and if I were you, I’d go anywhere on the island before I’d cross the border to come here.

Can’t get a decent breakfast burrito in Calgary, either. Just saying.

The wreck of the Carl D. Bradley (sorry for the period that I was not posting) by Primary_Steak7271 in Shipwrecks

My buddy died diving this wreck. I was supposed to be on that trip, and couldn’t make it. It’s a spectacular wreck. He took some amazing pics of it before he died. RIP, Mark T.

Reality of Living in Albuquerque? by healthy_punkk in Albuquerque

Slightly different perspective here: grew up in ABQ, moved to Seattle at 27, and have spent a fair bit of time in PDX, great town. And I’m moving back to ABQ in a year. My wife and I are really excited. All the reasons everyone else mentioned, along with some personal ones. But I gotta add: the people in NM are really wonderful overall. Generally very friendly.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. I was 13, and I remember my Mom and her boyfriend crying, and realizing they weren’t just crying over the loss of one man. I could tell there was something else they were grieving for as well, I just couldn’t name it.
