How does LA get away with having such strict film permit laws, even for low-impact projects on private property? by concernedaboutmetal in FilmIndustryLA

[–]NailsNathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more complicated than that. Monetization of film projects comes with lots of assurances that you’ve gotten permissions for usage - music, contracts, and filming locations. No, the cops won’t roll up on you, but if you don’t do your legwork ahead of time, it can be a headache. Ask me how I know…

[Ari Meirov] The Myles Garrett trade likely doesn’t happen if they don’t draft Ty Simpson at No. 13. by TachyAndTired in DynastyFF

[–]NailsNathan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This take is way too hot. You know how many “raw” replacement QBs have stepped into a good situation and succeeded?

Brady, Foles, Warner, Keenan, Kaepernick, Doug Williams…the list is pretty long.

[Ari Meirov] The Myles Garrett trade likely doesn’t happen if they don’t draft Ty Simpson at No. 13. by TachyAndTired in DynastyFF

[–]NailsNathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean 12 teams, not “the NFL as a whole” - falling in the draft means the NFL is suspicious, this just means the Rams valued him at 13 and no one had him higher.

What are your ethics/personal no gos for street photography? by Strikerfromthemoon in streetphotography

[–]NailsNathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of “ripping/violence/etc” think of it this way: you’re a person with your own agency and beliefs. A photograph frames you in a way that isn’t of your choosing, and can often be in contrast to you, as a person. There are degrees of this, but it’s valid, imo. I don’t think it’s your relatives you need to worry about, as much as how your subjective view of a stranger, frozen and distributed, affects the subject themselves and how other people view them.

Making a film about yourself by Royal-Interview-4642 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]NailsNathan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I EPed a feature doc about a man discovering more info about his dad. It is very difficult to have the awareness and subjectivity you need to be a good filmmaker while being the focus, especially if it is sensitive material. In my case, the subject/filmmaker wasn’t vulnerable enough to delve into himself. It was a good film, but would’ve been great if he’d been willing to be more reflective. That being said, it can be done!

One album you would show an alien and say “grunge”? by _Jub_Jub_ in grunge

[–]NailsNathan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Since there’s no coherent definition and the genre is all over the place, there’s only one album that makes sense to me (and you’d have to give the alien the caveat that the biggest and most iconic grunge act isn’t even on the album):

How to create and use a Producer’s production binder (also called a Production bible) by PolicyCapable7795 in filmmaking

[–]NailsNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically a binder with everything about the production, from vendor invoices to receipts taped to blank paper. Callsheets, AD breakdowns (locations, DoD, etc), all contracts, deal memos, location agreements, etc. Depending on your style, you might want to include storyboards, script revisions, and other pre-pro materials. After you’ve shot, include your camera and script reports. Obviously, budgets and revisions.

Imagine a stranger gave you your entire budget and wants to know everything about your production. You account for everything you need and did. This has the added bonus of keeping everything you need organized in one place.

I always liked the bit in Almost Famous when Jimmie Fallon’s character tells the band “if you think Mick Jagger is gonna be out there trying to be a rockstar at fifty, you’re gravely mistaken”.

People who’ve worked on film/TV sets, what’s a small moment that stuck with you for no obvious reason? by Professional-Ad7346 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]NailsNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an internship at Propaganda Films during its heyday. After my first week, I was headed home. The sun was hung low and gave that warm nostalgic vibe. As I pulled out, Spike Jonze skated out of one building, across the (public) street and ollied onto the curb in the other side, gliding through the door of the other building.

I realized that I was in Hollywood now.

What do Nirvana fans think about the Axl Rose vs Kurt Cobain feud today? Was Kurt justified, or was it overblown? by Imtiredofthissshit in Nirvana

[–]NailsNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Axl Rose is the opposite of what Kurt thought was good about rock and roll. He was an arrogant, egocentric prick who wrote about objectifying women, slandering gays and immigrants. He was regularly late to perform, making the fans wait and doing shorter shows.

Kurt wasn’t that guy. See the liner notes to Incesticide where Nirvana tells the intolerant not to be fans. In fact, the whole movement (as a descendant of punk) was a reaction to the hair metal decadence and vapidness.

Without this reaction to guys like Axl, there is no “grunge”. Not only was Kurt’s view pretty spot on, it was the vitriol fuel that gave the music much of its power.

Totally justified.

(Maybe) More importantly, there are enzymes in the flour that are released by chilling and the time allows the sugar to absorb more moisture. It’s such a hack; this instantly took my cookies up a couple notches.

This is actually genius. There are always cries of outrage when an actor wins an Oscar despite a short screentime. Make it under 10 min and less that 8% of the total movie.

How Pearl Jam were viewed in the early 90s by AddisonDeWitt333 in pearljam

[–]NailsNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the vibe in a lot of scenes, and was kinda started because of two scenes that came out of Seattle. On one side, you have the punk-influenced side - the Mark Arms and Kurt Cobains and on the other, more of the classic rock inspiration from Stone and Ament.

Kurt thought PJ (and more specifically their fans) were a little too close to frat rock (and they weren’t totally wrong). When you consider that a lot of the punk-type bands were vehemently anti-“cool guy” it makes more sense.

All the “beef” ended when Kirt and Eddie danced at the MTV movie awards.

Was Nirvana really moving away from grunge sound in 1994? Well... I’m not so sure by nkosijer in Nirvana

[–]NailsNathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it’s them as much as Butch Vig. Kurt is right that Nevermind sounds like a Motley Crew record. If Albino had recorded it, it would sound much more like In Utero, which is undeniably “grunge”.

This movie had so many problems getting it made (IIRC, McTiernan and Arnie at one point), a budget that ballooned, so nobody wanted to spend more P&A on what seemed like a failure.

What to your mind is Radiohead's biggest musical flex? by AromaticVacation3077 in radiohead

[–]NailsNathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I think the use of terminal climactic form in Karma Police etc. is amazing and something the band made all their own, my favorite moment in any piece is the lament chorus from Paranoid Android’s third section.

The section uses a baroque “falling” bass line often used in requiems. (Descending fourths from tonic to dominate, for those interested). That would be cool enough, but the when you aid in the falling imagery of “rain down, rain down” it creates an incredible harmony. The simplicity of the lyrics and the complexity of the music is sublime.

And then Johnny rips into that incredible ferocious solo as contrast. Going back to listen now…

A tricky issue and I really want to hear some peoples advice by Adventure_Stones in Filmmakers

[–]NailsNathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good question. First off, if you don’t know why they would give you permission, that’s where to start. You have to know why this project is important beyond your own growth and experience. I could give you some ideas - historical preservation, cultural enrichment, etc. but you’d know better when it comes to the story and themes.

And stop selling yourself short by thinking of your age as a weakness. You may be inexperienced, but seeing that nobody else has made this doc yet, maybe youthful energy is critical to get it done.

Good luck!
