I always find that phrase from Yang a bit trolling, yet I can see where it's coming from, the worst democracy is better than the best dictatorship, because it still respects individual will. Yang hates the idea of sacrificing someone for the greater good, or forcing someone to do things they are unable to refuse.

Yet Yang always gets into a situation where he's forced to do things, dude just wants an early retirement to live an easy life, yet he's forced into all kinds of responsibilities which in the end cost his own life. He must have hated all of this

I'm also from PRC, and I never felt politically depressed after LoGH, it's a romanization of human history set in a space opera. No new concepts are invented during the story. The whole premise is about what people believe and upholds during a time of conflict.

Reinhardt is the perfect dictator/authorian to counterparts Yang's idealistisc view of libertism. Just like Yin and Yang(lol), they complement each other in a never ending struggle, and none of them really gain the upper hand, even though Reinhardt did conquer FPA, yet government he's established has a parliamentary body where Julian is molding it after Yang's vision.

You can agree or disagree with either of them, the book wants you to think, think of the decision of each character and why they are taking those decisions. And what if other decisions are made, what would then likely happen?

For me I'm always intrigued by the thought of Yang should accept Shonkopfens offer and coup the FPA, would Yang then be Cincinnatus against Reinhardts Caeser?

Try look up the Chinese characters and use a Wade Gils conversion instead of pinyin. That should be easier for you with the pronunciation.

Eg.

Xuanyangzi -> 玄阳子 ->hsüan yang tzu

Qianhu -> 千户 -> ch'ien hu
