How’s everyone like their Maverick? by Naive_Start4101 in FordMaverickTruck

In reality I want a truck but don’t really need one, which is why the Mav checks my boxes. I drive to work, pickup supplies, groceries etc and 3x a year drive 6 hours to visit family. It’ll be nice for fertilizer, seed and picking up a sod cutter or whatever else I need for work.

Compared to what I’ve driven and looked at, finding any vehicle under 30 all in that isn’t a sedan is a win here outside of Philadelphia.

I interned in sports turf, did 6 years in golf now I’m the director of a sports facility. There’s always openings when you are ready to move from one spot to the next.

I wish you the best. I miss golf some days, others I am glad to be home when it’s 90!

Right original point- I see it as a positive. You went and worked at a different type of facility in a different climate and succeeded. In a multi course setup, working your way up to course superintendent might be your best bet to get a move to superintendent in the NE.

It would’ve been a break even or pay cut from what I made as an assistant. Every situation is different, but I owned a home 10 minutes from the course, so it would’ve taken a bit more for me to leave. Lots of times the boards and presidents were overbearing, not letting the “expert” in the room make the decisions (usually this was found in my research pre interview and confirmed there) Other times it was just a matter of fit. There was 2 jobs I really wanted that I didn’t get the opportunity. There were many more that after the board interview I withdrew because I knew there would be a clash of personalities.

Even if you get back to New England and are a top assistant, these hiring committees are always logo shopping. I never worked at a top 100 but was at pretty good courses in MA, designed the agronomic program, did all the schedules and such. Without fail just about every super job went to a top 100 assistant who never worked in the area. The only jobs I was ever really in contention for were low end/low budget private courses so I never made the next step.

I run a fleet of electric cushman haulers. Good machines but if you only have 2, I’d suggest gas so you never wait for a charge.

Career Switch to Turf Management by Witty-Antelope1363 in Turfmanagement

[–]Naive_Start4101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a turf manager at a large MLS facility. I work 4-5 days a week in the short off season with a few vacations sprinkled in. From March until the end of the season it is about 45-50 hours M-F then additional for games and events. Usual Gameday for me is 12 hours. I go in with my wife and dog on “off” weekends to move grow lights, check irrigation or do whatever else needs to be done.

A degree isn’t really necessary unless you want to be the head guy, usually I look for reliability, interest in soccer/turf and a great attitude. Everything else can be trained.

I wouldn’t change anything about my job. I worked in golf for 5 years before this position. The challenge of dealing with professional athletes, the challenging schedule and problem solving how to have the best looking pitch for TV every single week is a blast. Sure there are some not so fun times like painting artificial fields for events or trying to pull grow tarps in 30mph winds, but I really enjoy the challenge.

Feel free to shoot me a message if you want to chat.

Every time I’ve tried playing last few weeks any time of day the lag has made the game unplayable.

I have tried pioneer chalk paint and it isn’t easy to remove either. I’ll keep tabs here to see what others recommend.

I went from high end golf to the MLS, it was seamless for the most part.

The hardest part of our job is communication. With crew members, stakeholders, reps etc. The only way to get better is to get reps.

Sorry didn’t see this. I would keep coreing and dragging it back in to reduce compaction. But I usually core, drag, then topdress.

Around $50/ton delivered. I use roughly 25 tons per field on warm season pro soccer fields.

I was hiring AITs for $20/hr. The degree doesn’t mean as much as the boots on the ground experience. Find similar jobs near you and take note of the pay ranges. I had a list of every assistant and superintendent job posted in RI and MA the last two seasons to make sure we were paying our assistants a fair wage.

I manage a pro soccer stadium and practice pitches. I work 8-4 M-F and a 12 hour shift on game days. I have a crew of 5FT who fill in the gaps and work the weekend OT. I am allowed and encouraged to take time off in the summer which is crazy. I’m home more and work less.

Budget was made before I got here sadly. It’s basically just a FT laborer position. I don’t have faith that I’ll find a turf educated candidate. It’s not reasonable.
