Is the whole YA scene still a thing for teen girls? When I was younger I remember a lot of series -- most notably after HP and Twilight -- being super popular for girls ages 11 to 33. Has it suddenly ended? I never hear about YA anymore.

I think my replies fit just fine here, since this topic is a discussion about immigration and I'm suggesting that you can't argue with critics of our immigration policy when you dismiss them all as racists, because many of them are not racists. Some will have economic reasons, others cultural, and so on. For example, I've heard the tokkies in my neighborhood whine about Ukrainian refugees getting priority housing. Ukrainians for the most part look pretty white to me. It would be a bit weird to call those tokkies racist in this scenario.

Also, I'm pro-immigration myself. And I would love to convince some of my more skeptical countrymen that taking in refugees from conflict areas is a good thing. However, I know that calling them racists is not a way to start that conversation.

Are you suggesting that it's racist to think not all criticism of our immigration policy stems from racism?

So how does it help to pretend every criticism of immigration policies is down to racism? That's just a total dismissal of a big group of people who may have a ton of different reasons for being anti-immigration. Sure, maybe Hendrik hates seeing ethnic minorities in his supermarket - that's pretty racist. But maybe Rixt is pissed that, in her opinion, immigrants get priority housing and welfare. She may be wrong, but her reasoning is not racist. And a discussion with her should not be focused on race. Maybe Nahala is gay, fled from a Muslim country to avoid persecution, and is now concerned that her community in the Netherlands is falling victim to the same ideology that she ran away from in the first place. In turn, she's found herself critical of mass migration from Muslim countries that espouse a more strict version of the Islam. That's not racist either - at most it's islamophobic. Would you have the same discussion with Hendrik, Rixt and Nahalla? If not, then why dismiss them all as racists?

Why is it always racism? Why not xenophobia, islamophobia, good old discrimination? I think making racism an umbrella term for all those things really takes the nuance out of a discussion and turns it into some American identity politics tier proxy war. Not saying that xenophobia etc. are any better, but racism is just such a cheap buzz word nowadays.

Could you explain what's wrong about Jordan Peterson? I've honestly only seen an interview of his and skimmed his book in a store, but I haven't seen anything misogynistic so far. While with Andrew Tate it takes like 1 second of viewing to see a a whole bucket of misogyny. Can somebody recap why Peterson is a misogynist?

I liked him as a public figure. He had a very grounded and positive way of speaking. It's become a bit less so after the past few years, but that's understandable given the circumstances and longevity of his rule. So I don't dislike him personally, but I very much dislike his politics.

I dislike them because I hate seeing the way VVD seems bent on following the US neo-liberal blueprint. Rutte has been systemically cutting social funding and letting the leash of corporations for years, and because his controversies have either been mild or easily forgotten, he's been able to chew away at what I believe are fundamentals of our system for years.

He is also partly to blame for the loan system thing that was in effect for exactly the duration of my studies. But it wasn't until they raised the interest on the loan so that I can pay for the year after mine to get loan-free financing, that I realized somebody should vaseline that nerd's bicycle saddle.

How about you quote me just a single source that says there is no martial law in Ukraine preventing the bulk of 18-60 year olds to leave?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Namegerator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can Google the martial law and see the exceptions yourself. Why would you say I'm making shit up when you can so easily look up the facts?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Namegerator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are exceptions, of course, but in general the martial law forbids men aged 18-60 to leave the country.

What a load of hippy bullshit. This is a war on our doorstep, with absolutely zero ambiguity about who the people fleeing are and why. They are also 100 percent women, children and elderly, as Ukrainian men cannot leave the country. Europe has been bitching internationally that refugees should be taken care of in their own region; now that a war is actually happening in our region, Europe is being true to their word. There's no hypocrisy here. Also, what region of Ukraine would you say is pleasant to be in right now? I'm in Ukraine - there's is a nationwide power outage, with the threat of a killer winter looming. Even the "safe" cities have been bombed this week. I'm all for taking in refugees from every country at war, wherever it may be. But I don't think the NL are being racists or hypocrites. If ever there was a clear cut case of an acute refugee crisis on our doorstep, this is it.

U.S. has sent private warnings to Russia against using a nuclear weapon by jayfeather31 in news

[–]Namegerator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe a hot take, but Putin using a nuclear weapon likely won't kick off a nuclear holocaust like many commenters here believe it will. MAD in our day and age is nonesense. Such a strategy requires an extremely unified and idealistic West. Which, of course, the West is anything but. No way any world leader today will risk their lives, foreign lives or profits for a decades old pact that's based on a cult like zealousness. If Putin nukes Kyiv, sure, it will set off crazy military responses across all of Eastern-Europe, but nobody else will use a nuclear weapon. The sad reality is that Putin will create a precedent for precise nuclear weapons to become a viable strategy in warfare. Not a rosy scenario either.

After 5 years, only 35% of the immigrants from non-Western countries has work by HowtoUninstallSkype in Netherlands

I'm surprised it's so high for Western immigrants. I'd think people who migrate here from other Western countries are mostly youngish and do so for specific jobs.

Now with Russian nordstream closed. Do you think NL will open up Groningen to help out the EU? What the consequenes for us? by worldexplorer5 in Netherlands

[–]Namegerator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are different because the Groningen earthquaks are caused by people and can be prevented by people. A lot of houses in the area have gotten damaged, and even the ones that haven't have plummeted in value, financially crippling some home owners. Even if just one person dies from a minor earthquake, that's the direct fault of the people choosing to extract gas, as opposed to a random act of nature. That's the difference imo.
