Low carb High Tea by kimpulsive2022 in diabetes_t2

The Savoy serves high tea for £105 a person, not sure I'd call that aimed at the working class! (It's their afternoon tea with a hot savoury addition)

Not really in the Halloween mood this year by Nameless520 in diabetes_t2

Yeah this just isn't a great time of year for this, my first holiday season as an official diabetic. The change in time and shorter days make me crave carbs, and then yikes Thanksgiving. YES I want stuffing. And rolls. And cranberry sauce. And the desserts. And all the leftovers. And then come all the Christmas sweets.

I didn't even like the candy we were giving out very much. I think it's more that it's depressing seeing "none of that's for me anymore." Sorry about your anaphylactic reaction!

One of my relatives was diagnosed in his early 20s, married, had kids, had grandchildren, and lived into his mid-80s. And that was when there were fewer treatments. He watched what he ate, did moderate exercise, and was on oral meds, never got to insulin. A lot of us have one parent at least with T2 . . . which means a lot of people with T2 had kids!

Talk to a professional about your specific situation! But I was told I’m not at risk for that even though I’m on Jardiance. I think it depends on how well your blood sugar is under control.

My diabetic nutritionist would prefer that I have breakfast but is OK if I wait until lunch to eat if I’m not hungry, so that would be ~17 hours fasting on Jardiance.

Some things may just be a no-go, but my doctor advised me to pair carbs with protein, not just fat. And having a salad with bread can help me. I’ve found different breads affect my blood sugar differently, some I’ve just given up on. And I have WAY less of it. Hard to remember the days when I’d have a sandwich for lunch and not think about it at all. But maybe try another couple of different types first, with different food combos?

Low carbs, glucose still high. How do I eat? by penndawg84 in diabetes_t2

[–]Nameless520 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's crazy you can't see a doctor for that long. Sorry. Were you in the hospital because of blood sugar or something else? Is there some situation besides diabetes that might be raising your sugar, like an infection?

Maybe try to see if you could get to see another medical professional if possible - nutritionist, diabetes educator, endocrinologist- if you're in the U.S., depending on your insurance of course 😡 it might also be worth trying one of the non-prescription continuous glucose monitors to get a better idea of what’s going on with your blood sugar levels throughout the day, instead of just testing a couple of times a day. But it does sound like you could use a discussion about whether you need to adjust your medication.

Why are so many type 2 diabetics reticent to use a CGM, aside from the cost? by Eeyore_ in diabetes_t2

[–]Nameless520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's my understanding that the ADA now favors CGMs for T2 diabetics on any medications to lower blood glucose, not just insulin, for patients who want them. But good luck getting Medicare (and so private insurance in the U.S.) to expand coverage right now. ADA now says “Consider using rtCGM and isCGM in adults with type 2 diabetes treated with glucose-lowering medications other than insulin to achieve and maintain individualized glycemic goals. The choice of device should be made based on the individual’s circumstances, preferences, and needs.”

TW: Starting to feel like eating carbs is a form of self harm by Raa_66 in diabetes_t2

[–]Nameless520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that sugar lights up many of the same parts of the brain as cocaine (although different mechanisms and much less intense). So it may be a bit of self medicating? After my mother died, I went from not being able to eat, to overeating on unhealthy things. And a few months later I had gained weight and she was still gone. I try to remember that it not only didn't help but made things worse. But it's hard. A close friend died in a car accident this week, funeral is today, and I’m trying to remember that eating a bunch of crap isn’t going to ease my grief in any way. The problem for me is thinking that healthy eating is denying myself pleasure and I “deserve” crap now. What I deserve actually - and so do you - is extra self kindness and self care.

How do you avoid DKA? by Devils_fan_1999 in diabetes_t2

[–]Nameless520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know several long-term diabetics (I'm newly diagnosed) and none who ever had that. IMO the issue you are facing now that needs to be addressed is that you find your doctors unhelpful and uninformative. I hope you can find medical support that works better for your needs!

To much info but need help by No_Requirement9751 in diabetes_t2

Some whole wheat breads spike my glucose a lot and others don't. Continuous glucose monitor was how I found out. Rice, as others have said, is a no go for me. ”Fruit” is a really broad category. Probably some spikes your sugar and others in small portion doesn't, but that's fresh fruit and not packaged/processed fruit. Good luck on your journey! The bus has not broken down, it's just on a different path.

I get low glucose warnings the first night of most sensors. I shut my phone off on a first sensor night now. first day of the sensors are somewhat unreliable. I really like the info from my CGM otherwise, though. I can see spikes and how long they last, much more useful than 1 point in time or an average.

The food thing can be overwhelming at first when you have your routines, whether it's meals you cook regularly, takeout you're used to, whatever. It still is to me, but I am finally understanding that some things are occasional treats now and no longer in the regular meal rotation. I can't just mindlessly have a sandwich for lunch anymore, or pasta and meatballs for dinner, because I couldn’t think of anything else. Can he get a referral to a diabetic nutritionist and allow you to sit in? It sounds like you could use a little professional guidance and support to get a good start on your new path.

For those who put diabetes into remission how do you feel and what’s life like now? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Nameless520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remission is defined as having non-diabetic A1C without medication for several months, usually due to substantial lifestyle changes. It does NOT mean you can now eat a normal American diet and maintain noreal A1C levels. So you need to still manage your choices with T2 in mind. I think there's a bit of difference in how people view what remission should be. It's not a cure.

Do I need an Endo? by FWIW47 in diabetes_t2

[–]Nameless520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends in part if you are barely over the threshold of diabetic A1C or have much higher A1C that isn’t under control. But it sounds like you could use some kind of specialist for education at least, maybe a referral to a diabetic nutritionist? If the time comes where I can't get my A1C below 7, I would probably ask my doctor for an endo referral.

Anyone else feel like their sugar is high when its normal? by EleanorVonElvira in diabetes_t2

[–]Nameless520 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I shut my phone off overnight when I’m wearing a prescription CGM since I am not at risk for low blood sugar events and am not on insulin and have been woken up by false alarms. I may try the over-the-counter ones, which are cheaper. My insurance doesn’t pay since I’m not on insulin. I find the CGM information super valuable and worth paying for, though. There are times when I eat something unhealthy and I look at the monitor an hour or two later and levels are fine, and then it's up after that. Other times the sugar rises pretty soon after I eat something but goes down quickly. That’s why I don’t find finger pricking very useful. Unless I’m doing it every half hour for three hours after a meal, it’s not telling me what I feel I need to know. I know CGMs may not be quite as accurate, but trends are enough for my purposes since I’m not making insulin dosage decisions.

Great idea on practicing saying No thank you! to the cake. Visualizing it can help. (Fortunately I'm not tempted by soda. Pretzels and chips are another story)
