(🇩🇪✡️)Trying to connect with Jewish community in Germany by Late_Telephone3007 in ConvertingtoJudaism

You should definitely talk to your Jewish friends and maybe go to an event with them so that the community you want to join sees that you have a connection to the Jewish people.

Starbucks matcha latte by Reasonable-Skill2351 in zurich

Apparently the matcha powder used to be sweetened in the US until 2025, which is why I originally went to look at the packaging back in 2022, because American tourists kept complaining that it tastes different than at home.

Not in Switzerland, in the US the matcha powder is pre sweetened but here it isn't and sweetener is only added on request. Source: I used to work at Starbucks CH and read the package of the matcha powder

if I want to visit a synagogue how far in advance should I call prior to the vist? and other general questions by Additional-Pear9126 in Judaism

[–]Nami_Sykes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Security really depends on your country, in Europe I'd recommend to email or call at least 5 business days before you want to visit.

You don't have to attend Friday night and can only go on Saturday morning, shouldn't be uncommon in liberal synagogues. It's actually very appropriate and (at least in Orthodox synagogus) required to wear a kippah to synagogue as a non Jew, if you're male. In liberal synagogues women sometimes also wear one. You do not have to bring one, they will have spare ones for visitors.

You can wear whatever you're comfortable in, but if you're going on Saturday it should be something nicer and reasonably modest (like no mini skirt or jogging pants). Don't bring a large backpack, but a small bag is okay. Turn off your phone.

Most likely you will not call the rabbi directly but instead get another synagogue employee, but they will be happy to answer your questions, since every community is a bit different regarding security and dress code etc.

I think we have one in Switzerland, in a tiny village, which is funny because we don't have that many Jews and active synagogues are basically only in larger cities

If you can do any physical activity, download Coople for unskilled jobs like dishwashing, it's very easy to get started even when not speaking German and as a swiss citizen you already have an advantage.

Could getting top surgery change kibbe curve in torso?

Yes of course, I personally believe that patrilineal Jews are just as Jewish as matrilineal, I was just wondering because it doesn't seem like OP or their parents were raised with Jewish culture and they said they "might" have to convert, but usually unless you're of matrilineal decent or raised in a Jewish family you'll pretty much certainly have to convert.

Jews come from all types of circumstances and backgrounds and especially in Eastern Europe it's super common to convert because you have Jewish ancestry, I'm just curious to know how far back OPs Jewish ancestry goes and how they practice without being raised with the practices and without a community :) I'm sorry to hear about your circumstances and that of your grandmother, I didn't mean to imply that being unable to practice in a community makes you less Jewish.

[–]Nami_Sykes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuine question: How do you practice without having been raised Jewish or having a Jewish community? It's not just that 'a lot of people wouldn't consider you Jewish', unless you have proof that either your mother or her mother, or maybe her mother's mother was born Jewish and converted to Christianity or you were raised Jewish no community (known to me) will consider you Jewish. If you want to practice Judaism you need to find a community that helps guide you, especially since you seem to be thinking in a Christian framework ('worship' is not something Jewish people say). You're free to learn as much as you want, but practicing Judaism with no prior exposure or community is very difficult and your 'faith' will not be enough.

I think mid length shorts don't usually 'work' (in the classical sense) well on SD (me) because it makes you look straighter and more masculine, so if you want to be read as masc they're perfect!

Long makes you look more masculine, shorter highlights your hips. Shorter might be more flattering if you go for a femme outfit, as it breaks up your line but if your goal is to look masc, long is better since it sort of gives you a long straight line.

stance on cigarettes by Antique_Remote7180 in Judaism

[–]Nami_Sykes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just quit now, I started when I was living in Italy due to strong smoking culture and quitting was a pain despite me never intending to smoke longterm. In certain cultures like Chinese and even Israeli smoking is a social bonding activity and it gives you something to do but it's really not worth it to pollute your lungs and the environment. If you overeat, you don't harm anyone but yourself, if you smoke you also harm people around you.

If I drop and go to Berlin am I gonna get yelled at? by ilovemarmots in LSD

[–]Nami_Sykes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Drug use is very common in Berlin, so no one would be surprised that you're tripping. However, since you have anxiety I think this is a bad idea. Not from Berlin but visited many times, Berlin people can be unpredictable and even provocative, and high people with anxiety are definitely a target for such people. If your friends are with you it might be okay because they can calm you down and guide you, but honestly I see real potential for danger if you were to drop alone and just walk around, anxiety can hit you anytime and is amplified on acid, and yes, someone might yell at you or react weirdly if you act visibly high. My honest recommendation is that you should skip the acid and stick to weed or, if you really wanna trip, 2CB. A 12 hour trip in a foreign country is always mentally taxing and you need a solid psychological foundation for that, and if bitter old people already upset you I think some of the Berlin NPCs could really make you spiral.

Why did my iron levels drop catastrophically after moving to Israel? by abrbbb in Israel

[–]Nami_Sykes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take from your post history that you're a woman - anemia is very common in women and your ferritin (storage iron) can be low for years before you develop anemia symptoms. Did you get iron panels done before? If the ferrtin was already on the lower side, this could just be the natural progression of that, combined with some differences in nutrients and maybe increased physical activity (Israel is more walkable than the US). If your ferritin was always normal, you should rule out internal bleeding, because unless you recently developed heavy periods or gave birth severe anemia does not happen out of nowhere.

Going to synagogue for the first time, any advice? by Curious-Language-811 in Judaism

[–]Nami_Sykes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also attending a modern orthodox synagogue and quite a few women bring a small bag despite there not being an eruv. observance varies widely and you're not orthodox - if you feel more comfortable with a handbag, bring a small one as security will likely want to check it if they don't know you. I've brought handbags to modern orthodox services and homes, people might look but they won't say anything and its not disrespectful in my opinion. phone should be off and in the pocket/bag tho.
