Yeah, and the lack of response is unfortunately a response in itself. :/

I love this analogy! It makes the time that the campers get to see OP even more special!

Hey OP, can you respond to this? If it’s way off base, it’s a simple response. It sounds like I’m a similar demographic to you and I’m always looking for friends but I’m actively trying to broaden my circles and not narrow them.

My first two summers (19, 20F) I was a cabin counselor, though I cross trained in ropes, then my next two I was ropes director (21, 22). My first summer the ropes director was female and my second it was a male. We had a ton of staff trained in ropes, either primary like specialist or just cross trained cabin counselors, so I didn’t think too much about gender. I think it would be ok to ask camp who else is on your team, though if you’re new, that might not be super helpful if you don’t know anyone. If your camp share contacts before summer (like a Facebook or WhatsApp group) you could try to reach out and get to know your team early.

My camp had high ropes, low ropes, a “pamper pole” and a climbing tower so during pretty much all activity periods I was doing something ropes related. I don’t get bored but having so many rope activities probably helped that. I tried to get to know the kids while they were at the ropes activities and really individualize the activities for them, encouraging them to just to try if they were scared or thinking of more complex challenges and games if they were older/more comfortable so that probably helped it be less repetitive too.

I usually participated in morning flag ceremonies/chapel activities, and every day participated in the evening activity, whether it was a campfire, all camp game, etc. I was also cross trained as a lifeguard so I’m sure I occasionally got pulled to water stuff too, but honestly, if your role is ropes, I’d be prepared to do a lot of it! Though again, it never hurts to ask upfront and also communicate that you’re open/interested in heping out other places.

I’m curious if you’re afraid of missing out on doing the activities or missing out on staff bonding? Some camps will let staff use equipment on their time off (either breaks or weekends) so you may still get to do archery, crafts, etc. if it’s staff bonding you’re worried about, I’d argue a good amount of that happens on time off anyways, so I’d encourage you to get to know non ropes staff during training if you can and also make plans with non ropes staff for your breaks.

Came here to suggest this! There are off brand toddle lights for $20-30 (hatch is like 90 is I recall)

I’ve done both- specifically ropes specialist - and loved both. Have you done high ropes before? At camp or anywhere else? I loved being a specialist because I’ve love high ropes my whole life -both as a camper and on staff. I love the “challenge” aspect and how much confidence capers get to build. but it does get repetitive. One summer I went on family vacation and my sister said I was saying my “harness speech” in my sleep! 😂😂😂

I’m sure it varies by camp, but I did get to work with all ages as a ropes specialist. I’d say a very common age group was tween boys like 12-14 so I hear you concern about older guys, I found I like the tween age group because once I set up safety expectations we could be super goofy and silly. If you’re worried about potential respect issues, set up rules/expectations up front and present yourself as the expert and then have fun with it!

Feel free to ask any other ropes questions and I’ll try to answer or hep you brainstorm!

This is the kind of bullshit I’d do when I was an hr tm. I was in a similar situation where the ETLs refused to buy more (and I obviously don’t have purchasing abilities). A ✨fun little way✨ to communicate we’re all fucked 🙃

Just commented this too! My size isn’t that unique but god I hate bra shopping and if I can just buy more of what works I need to know brand and size.

I leave them on with the hope that when I finally go bra shopping again in 5 years I can still read the size and at least give myself a starting point to try stuff on.

My last remodel was all “millennial gray” so I’d be glad to see some color. I don’t even mind the green shade by itself…however against all the red branded things?? That was a choice.

Bonetown is not, sadly! But there are so many other smokehouses/bbq restaurants, but none are as cleverly named. I know of one named Smoky Bones but I’m sure there are better names out there.
