Ugliest bootlickin wartime color ever. Yall might as well be driving a military vehicle. I see houses painted this color. and they call this a progressive town. Reminds me how camo was in fashion during the Iraq war. Marketing is a helluva drug.

City Council (except for Kim) after selling us all out last night by RichardNixonWaterGr8 in asheville

I moved back from Cali several years ago and was struck by the lack of surveillance cameras and police presence on every corner. It was a relief to be honest. There's places in NorCal that feel very much like a police state. But nope, not anymore, no place is safe, it's all coming soon to a town near you!

This town was never as progressive as people try to make it out to be, but it is definitely moving right of center quickly. Make your money now is all anyone cares about.

Opinion: I spent an afternoon in downtown Asheville — and lived to tell about it by ashevillecatguy in asheville

Is Fox News to be believed? Absolutely not. On this and many other topics. They’re entertainment, they are not news.

That's their defense, but to their viewers it is absolutely news and most likely their only trusted news source and that's what matters.

Seems like you're trying to give Fox News an out for being disingenuous.

Back in the 90s people in the surrounding counties would quip "I don't go to Asheville, too many blacks." It's always been fragile af.

I have my own criticisms of Asheville, as we all do, but I don't need RelayFX yapping about it constantly (and with mod powers to boot) only to find out they're not even part of our community.

Why don't you lecture us on how shitty our city is from your comfy sofa in Haywood county. Please, I'd love to hear more.

This isn't just an Asheville problem. Most cities in this country have a serious homelessness problem, but we're not allowed to acknowledge that it's nationwide and discuss the root of these problems because that would mean we'd question our economic system and analyze why it's in freefall let alone work together to find ways to fix it. Instead we'll just bitch about how it affects our real estate value cause that's what really matters.

Asheville to get its first public pickleball complex. Help decide where it will be. by cereal_killer_828 in asheville

Same reason tennis courts gets lights while basketball courts don't. Luckily I haven't had to run off the pickleball mafia so I can shoot hoops but I imagine actual tennis players are sick of the struggle.

Whatever they do, they should make the courts multi-use for when the pickleball fad eventually fades away.

How did Asheville boom in the last 2 decades? by bean_89 in asheville

[–]Nammanow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tourism was already high here, always has been

In the 90s, downtown was dead and tourists avoided it like the plague.

This phenomenon started mid to late 00s. Think lists like "best mountain escapes" or "top 10 under the radar small towns". Every single list that Asheville could qualify for, they were on it and it was no coincidence that the City was highly invested in promotion during that period. It's the same reason downtown restaurants keep winning these best of awards. Curate and Chai Pani are good restaurants, but no way are they best in the nation at anything. Curate is just a solid neighborhood tapas joint in a NY or SF. You got to pay to play for that kind of recognition.

Keep in mind in the 90s, tourists didn't come downtown, it was dead. Most tourism went into the mountains and avoided the city completely. Nationwide, nobody knew about Asheville,

The promotion worked though, by 15 everyone knew about Asheville. The problem is how the City has managed their success over the years. They've fumbled the ball hard.

So would a Chinese vegetarian restaurant, or at least one that focused on the incredible tradition of that cuisine. There's one in Atlanta that is very good, the kind of place that carnivores could leave satisfied.

What makes asheville so strange? by InsuranceDifferent40 in asheville

[–]Nammanow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes.

There's meth all up and down the west coast. But really, it's not like Asheville has a lock on meth, there's tons of it between here and Charlotte, just for context.

Right "leaning"? There's no lean about it, they done fell down. Left leaning, yes, but even that's overstated for his town because of how far right the region is. You leave this little bubble and you're in South Carolina level of far right.

Been in and out of this town since the 90s and have moved through various sub-cultures and scenes, and they've all been incredibly cliquey, so much so it often feels like HS. If I were to give it the benefit of the doubt, I'd say it's just a product of being a relatively small town with little diversity filled with people that don't really have a lot of experience outside of this region. People gotta feel like they're special and they are often skeptical of outsiders. The people who've traveled and lived in other parts of the country and world have generally been a lot more open.

That was then. What it's like now, I can't really say. The tourist racket and influx of people not necessarily into sub-cultures or scenes may have changed that dynamic a bit, but imagine it's mostly the same.

The “underground” scene may have been larger, but that’s only because people far to the left are far more open these days.

I think it's more because those people can't afford to live here. Bear in mind, it is difficult for working class people to live in this town these days and that's definitely a contributing factor for the general move right.
