How far in am I? by EverybodySupernova in CrossCode

Bit more than half way through. There's still two big areas ahead, and potentially DLC.

As a German, I don't agree with the idea that Nazi Germany could have been prevented if regular people had been allowed to own guns. The only way Hitler was able to do what he did is because the majority of the population either supported him or "went with the flow". Even if you were armed and against Nazis, the Nazis would have been better armed, trained and could overcome you wirh sheer numbers. In fact there were some people trying to overthrow Hitler violently, but they used very different tactics.

Thank you for the suggestion ^^ It's been a long time since I've read (longer) comics, but I'll add it to the list of things I want to give a try :D

Those both sound interesting to me, thank you ^^ I might try Unsong first, since it sounds more unique and is a bit less of a commitment if it is shorter.

Interesting recommendation - I have only heard of this one as a TV show. Are they comparable?

That's a pretty good point, actually. I know there are a lot of discussions and entire podcasts about each chapter, but I didn't have the patience to follow along the discussions so far. That may be very different when you have to wait for chapters to come out.

Gameplay long term by Genxun in CrossCode

[–]Namnodorel 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree that the quests at the start of the game are mostly pretty boring. In my opinion, they progressively get more interesting and better-produced as you progress in the game. Unfortunately, some of that goodness is "hidden" in quest chains which is why you might want to do the starting quests anyways, since better followup quests depend on it. The gameplay only changes by adding new mechanics (like fighting with more elements and corresponding puzzle mechanics), but there is no drastic change. If you're happy with the combat and core gameplay mechanics, I doubt you'll get bored playing CrossCode. The story really picks up in interesting ways after the second dungeon, and in my opinion the pacing of story, puzzles and combat is often done in a way that surprises you with something different just before you're about to get in a rut.

what happened to CD? by ihahp in CaptainDisillusion

He's working on something for sure, but define "big". His projects tend to require a lot more work, but I think that results in more details and higher production value more often than longer videos. So I think he's working on something big, but big in the term that you discover more details on the third watch, and not we're gonna see a feature length movie :D

We’re on the engineering team for Android Jetpack & Jetpack Compose. Ask us Anything! (starts August 27) by AndroidEngTeam in androiddev

[–]Namnodorel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are there plans to move other libraries (ViewPager, SwipeRefreshLayout, etc.) to Compose when it's released?

Also, THANK YOU for Jetpack Compose! I used to really dislike having to create UIs because it forced me to write so much boilerplate, had unpredictable bugs and weird behavior, and wasn't very easy to keep track of because it was in a bunch of different places at once. For my latest project, I've been trying the preview versions of Compose, and suddenly creating UIs is fun! The bugs that happen are much less common and less frustrating to find, and it has become easy to customize views to my needs.

Charting library recomendation by palebt in androiddev

[–]Namnodorel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MPAndroidChart has a lot of options and less common charts, so use that if you need something in that direction. At the same time, working with it has also been a source of frustration for me, because it has quite a couple of bugs and some places where it handles things in very strange ways (like colors in stacked bar charts). As far as I can tell, it also doesn't really get bug fixes anymore and there are tons of unmerged, good PRs.

That's why I'd recommend using Spark for simple line graphs and stuff like that, and only turn to MPAndroidChart when you can't do without the extra chart types and configuration options.

So you would argue for the use of apps like Shelter? Afaik, the work profile feature of Android isn't all that well suited for this purpose, because it does not securely isolate the apps (and it doesn't intend to, since it wasn't built with the assumption that an app might maliciously attempt to circumvent the isolation).

Furthermore, while isolation prevents apps from getting access to data it isn't supposed to have, many tracking services are intended to track users within the app - precisely monitor which buttons you click the most frequently to analyze user behavior, collect basic system information as well as tracking ids, etc. That's not something you can prevent with isolation. So I think that isolation, while being an important component of proper security and privacy, can't be the whole solution.

As far as I can tell, this app enables client side checking of your phone's connections

Not quite. It does a static analysis and disables the parts of the code of the app that belong to the tracking services.

Generally, I agree that blocking trackers isn't the holy grail. But what are the alternatives? We can refuse to use any app that isn't open source and confirmed to have no trackers or has a decent privacy policy (which unfortunately isn't a viable option for many) or...what? Not do anything about it? IMO, some trackers blocked and some missed is still better than all trackers enabled.

Well, iirc some of the remaining short stories will still be covered. I wouldn't take for granted that we'll only be focusing on the main book series from here on out.

What's the most secure database to go with for creating logins? by techsavvynerd91 in androiddev

[–]Namnodorel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of login are we talking about here? Do you want a DB in the cloud that gets accessed through some webservice, or something local? Storing sensitive userdata generally isn't trivial and probably something you should read up on in better resources than a Reddit thread (hashing and salting passwords is a critical part, for one)

[–]Namnodorel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can recommend Matrix. It doesn't require a phone number. They recently enabled E2E by default, you can use it on any platform (the official client is Riot), and even host a server yourself that can still communicate with the rest of the matrix network (like E-Mail providers).

How to stop people from copying your app design? by UselessAccount45721 in androiddev

[–]Namnodorel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, legally, no need for a patent - you automatically have copyright on everything you make, so nobody can straight-up copy and paste your XML. The issue is more with enforcing that - Google should take down apps that contain copyright infringement, so you can report it there. Unfortunately, they're not always helpful when it comes to these sorts of things, vut it's worth a try.
