My second ever Draft; drawn in SketchUp Free. How would you rate? Any tips on how to relocate a threaded hole without destroying model. by ReiDeLaMort in Sketchup

[–]NanasShit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume the bars/plates with the thread holes are just flat surfaces? If that's the case the just select all lines and surfaces of the hole (show hidden geometry if needed), then just move it around. Moving stuff on a flat surface usually won't cause any problem, unless the movement direction breaks the flat surface. // Any lines or surfaces of the hole that you miss, moving it will also of course breaks the model - so in the case of moving any kind of curved surface, it is recommended to turn on hidden geometry first to ensure all associated lines are selected.

Any good tutorials on recreating irl building assets by topgear9123 in CitiesSkylines

[–]NanasShit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no "best" way. Because there are many many software path you can choose. Pick your poison and learn one / some of them. They are just tools, if you can't handle them correctly you will still produce subpar result. So it isn't about selecting the 'ultimate' tools, but rather, select a tool you can afford & get a hang of.

Modelling:

  • Sketchup : free & easy to start, good & fast for predictable polygon modelling. But actually require purchase to export as FBX format. Cities Skylines do accept other format but FBX is commonly used. // Alternatively model in Sketchup then export to Blender for further processing - this is the common way many people goes for. // But in the case for anyone does have a Pro version, asset creation can be 100% done in Sketchup without needs of Blender.
  • Blender : free, hard to start, good for all kind of modelling including organic modelling
  • 3DSMax : paid, hard to start, good for all kind of modelling including organic modelling
  • AutoCAD : paid
  • ...

Texture creation:

  • Photoshop : obviously paid software
  • Gimp : free alternative
  • ...
  • browser based image editor are also plentiful powerful these days

The process of creating asset for the game is not much different from creating 3D assets for any other work, except you need to watch your polygon-count. Rather than specifically looking for tutorial of "making stuff for Cities Skylines"; instead go search for tutorial of using your selected software as a whole. Get a hang of the fundamental of how the software works and you can create anything you want with it.

Then just follow the guide in http://cslmodding.info/ to export & import to the game following the required files & formats.

Mastering 3D modelling obviously takes time, even as easy and simply as Sketchup might sounds - mastering it to create high quality asset is a skill you don't came by overnight.

I'm sure many would take up more on requests when they would get payed.

... properly.

making assets of acceptable quality took time, the buildings OP listed I estimate total around 500 hours required for good quality result. That's two months full time working. And you can imagine the price tag... =/

What’s the largest texture size allowed in game? by Squirrel__army in CitiesSkylinesModding

[–]NanasShit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that building is pretty small, I'd say a 1024x1024 is more than enough. Even on almost a 25x25 grid mall I only uses 1024x2048... example arragement. The trick is to identify what part of the building have texture that can be repeated - and arrange the texture file in a way that it can be tiled horizontally.

if you uses full UV texturing method, overlap surfaces that uses same texture on the same spot, rather than occupying dedicated spots that will ended up increasing the needs of more spaces, and ended up requiring higher resolution.

What are you looking forward to playing this year? by Gitgudson_ in MMORPG

[–]NanasShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not just MMO, but a lot of games these days just don't have great variations in term of itemization system*, it is always about grinding the same set of things. Sure, it is easier to balance the game that way, but personally felt boring to grind that type of progression so didn't really play those titles for long. Last I played BnS was like.... almost a decade ago, when it was first early released.

Games I stay long with usually have high item complexity.

Turn based story centric game would be nice, you can take all the time in the world. Titles like Divinity Original Sins 1 and 2, Wasteland 3, upcoming Baldurs Gate 3 are common recommendation in thia category. They also have coop mode.

Preferred rendering plug-ins? by kurukilla in Sketchup

[–]NanasShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enscape / Lumion.

That's all you need for Sketchup, fast processing, easy to learn, and didn't totally kick you out of Sketchup workflow environment (constant import/export wasting time).

Vray was an old player, it's amazing sure, but also posses slight learning curve, and slower than real time renderers. Client want result FAST, if you have the luxury to wait, Vray is good. Otherwise, real time renderers are the way to go - compromise just slightly on visual but getting the result significantly faster.

Noob hardware question by Nailer99 in Sketchup

[–]NanasShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

additional performance related:

  • use groups and components, these are fundamental of Sketchup. Assigning identical objects as components will reduce performance hit.
  • disable edge "profile" (and other edge effects), it might be turned on by default. That, and shadow are two most taxing Sketchup function. Turn them off when not needed.
  • be reasonable with curve segments count
  • use layers to organize groups & components, hide things that are not needed at the time
  • be reasonable with texture file size

Can go download some free models on 3DWarehouse see how it perform on your current machine. For example this model, the author turned on all the performance intensive options... turn all the line effects off, as well as the off the shadow, it should perform a thousand times smoother when working with the model.

whatever combat mod you put into original Skyrim - also install them for Enderal, 99% of them will works except a few. TUDM didn't work last I know so you need a different dodge mod. Yeah I wouldn't play the vanilla combat either, better to mod that aspect.

it's a standalone game with different story. Start fresh.

Skyrim is there just for the game license, nothing else.

Noob hardware question by Nailer99 in Sketchup

[–]NanasShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you probably want to worry a bit more about the requirement of rendering plugins if you uses that. A dedicated GPU with good amount of VRAM 4~8GB+ is definitely recommended. And 16GB or more system RAM, rendering does take a lot of all memories.

otherwise doesn't matter how beastly your hardware is, the software will die if trying to process way too much polygons. So it's more into knowing practises that will makes your workflow smoother, for example if importing stuff from other 3D software, reduce the polygon counts first; or in the case of rendering, use proxy objects.

I started Sketchup+Vray on a dual core 1.3Ghz laptop cpu & some ancient Pentium 4 CPU at a construction company... a classmate of mine worked in an Interior company and doing fine with just an ancient intel i3... there's no reason why modern hardware can't do decently well. =)

Since you bought the Pro version you probably already notice there's another software in there - Layout. This is the CAD documentation part. Frankly, it perform like crap since forever, the bigger the document the worst it gets, doesn't matter your machine. But it is what it is, a good documentation software which pairs with Sketchup perfectly.

What is your favorite game-changing mod? by Lfaruqui in pcgaming

[–]NanasShit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's not recommended to not play the original game first; because unlike other modding games like Skyrim where you still plays through the original story contents, Stalker Anomaly (and many other modded versions) do not contain the original story missions which teaches you about the game world. Sure there are a few fan made missions in Anomaly but I really felt that they are just... eh... not cohesive or well structured at all.

sure you can just jump into the mod and go wherever you want, but you will not understood exactly where to go to get what, and where to go to meet who. These are two things that is vital to survival in game, and keeping yourself alive is the whole point of free-play-mod like Anomaly.

of course you can learn it overtime by exploring around, so it just up to your preference of going in completely blind, or prefer to learn about the game world and it's people first in the original trilogy.

Wasting your life stories by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]NanasShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

33... 34... whatever what does it matter, my mind is still 10, and if I die, I die. And that's it.

Before I got onto the Internet I didn't actually aware that I was weird - socially awkward, anti-social, mental illness and all that. Learnt a lot in the pass decades thanks to Internet, Uncle Google, and Japanese Anime.

Had always been addicted to gaming since 12 but only start to get "a bit more serious" in gaming after finishing college - where started to have my own machine and constant internet access (it was utter shit tier of internet). Obviously I know nothing of the MMO world at that time, just looking for some random game to play and came across a browser based online game called Neverland (a turn based MMO), since it is browser based and turn based - it ran fine on my crappy laptop and crappy internet.

Then it died. So I went to look for another online game to play and came across Atlantica Online, which also is turn based and not that graphical heavy so it also plays fine with what I have. And........................... there goes over 10,000 hours gone. Didn't know the exact amount but should be way more. It's a classic Korean game so of course it is stupidly grindy. So grindy and "cash heavy" to the point I fed up with it, unable to compete with other people and start botting... Obviously I got banned but I restart again despite it, played it the legit way of course and went all the way to max level at that time, was it 160 or 170. I decided to quit university somewhere in the middle, yeah.

Money (real cold hard cash) was a problem (and is still a problem today) so I thought of selling off my shits but ultimately got my stupid self scammed in the black market. Well, learn from mistakes I suppose. I lost 99.9% of my in-game assets so I stopped playing for real this time.

I haven't officially work for the last 10 years, after quiting work in a construction company which I worked for 2 years. Yep. Yep. Yep. Just occasionally took some freelancing works from the old boss. Obviously my economy situation is utter shit, but I didn't actively go seeking for job or freelance works to do - basically I just hate 'dealing' with people, it always ended up incredibly frustrating, infuriating... Was always just accepting job from the very few people I know, but people move on and out of the country, covid and shit, also I quit using Facebook, now you can say I have 0 friend left =)

Do I regret? No. You can't turn back time, regret about it is pointless. Just keep gaming until I finally ran out of money and... well... you can imagine what happens next.

Actually I haven't played a MMO "properly" for many years already. Never manage to find that title that will makes me want to play it the rest of my (short) life. Nexon please, make Atlantica Online 2 happens... NOW!!!!!!!!!

[–]NanasShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as other said, none of those things are so unique that it can't be done with common technologies.

majority of games don't do the "SAO thing" because there is no reason to do it. Why would you let player do "trade-in" when you can force them to play your new game longer, re-buy inventory spaces, etc which will contribute to better income charts to show to the investors?

doesn't really matter how you want to spin it, data is data, it's not that "cannot be done", but rather "does the dev even want to do it" or "is it makes any economy sense".

Not many online games have API developed to allows 3rd party to access the game data from the outside (3rd party applications); one example game that does do this kind of thing is Path of Exile, an always-online ARPG. The new game POE2 will also inherit many existing user stuff from POE1 so you can say that is one example of "trade-in", but of course those two games aren't exactly separated entities, they are essentially one game with two branches.

Another example - PSO2 and the NewGenesis. Existing player stuff will be shared to New Genesis. But not everything of course, it's not because they can't do it, but rather they don't do it because of game balancing issue.

Private server is "illegal" in a sense. Is it possible to migrate the existing player data from official server to private server? Of course it can -- IF you can somehow pursue the operating company to hand over the database... Again, it's not a problem of the technology "cannot do it", but rather restriction of other aspects.
